Benign retrorectal tum.urs: Contribution of laparoscopic approach

Introduction: Presacral tum.urs are extrem.ly rare entities as the asym.tom.tic retrorectal m.ss, although its clinical presentation includes infectious com.lications and signs of m.lignant degeneration. m.gnetic resonance im.ging is the m.st efficient im.ging study for its diagnosis. The treatm.nt of choice is com.lete surgical excision and traditional approaches are m.inly through abdom.nal, posterior and perineal approach, depending on anatom.cal characteristics of the lesion. Laparoscopic excision of these retrorectal lesions has been reported in a few cases. Patients and m.thods: We report two cases of 38 and 24-year-old wom.n who com.lained of anorectal sym.tom. and were diagnosed as retrorectal tum.ur by im.ging studies. One of them.was infected. Both cases were resected by m.ans of laparoscopic techniques. There was no surgical com.lication and they were discharged on the 3rd and 4th postoperativ. day, respectiv.ly. Histopathologic findings rev.aled benign cystic teratom. in both cases. A follow-up after 36 m.nths showed no recurrence. Our surgical endoscopic technique and a brief rev.ew of perioperativ. cares are presented and discussed. Discussion: Laparoscopic excision could be indicated in selected retrorectal tum.urs and a great surgeon’s resolv. is always required. A m.ticulous dissection m.st be perform.d in order to identify and preserv. v.tal structures. It’s only absolute contraindications seem.d to be the suspicion of m.lignancy and operativ. inexperience. Conclusions: The com.lete laparoscopic rem.v.l of presacral lesions is a responsible surgical procedure which offers adv.ntages from.the sanitary and aesthetic point of v.ew. This new endoscopic indication could be considered probably as a better technique than open approach in selected patients.

Tracheal disruption is a life-threatening rare com.lication of total thyroidectom. that it should be prev.nted. The own-patient risk factors, procedure of tracheal intubation and a m.ticulous surgical technique are three m.in keys to keep in m.nd. Both m.dical and surgical m.nagem.nt of this injury depends on its size, location and patient’s sym.tom. although neither of them.prev.nts late com.lications. An early diagnosis could im.rov. with prognosis although it is m.ndatory to perform.either respiratory functional or im.ging study in order to assum. its healing. When the tracheal laceration is diagnosed during the surgery, we should take care with a continuous m.nitoring of the patient’s v.tal signs. A good oxygenation will be succeeded in high v.lum. and low pressure with endotracheal tube distal to the lesion. We adv.ce placing a tube drain near the disruption to prev.nt em.hysem. and an early extubation to av.id an ischaem.c dam.ge of the m.cosa. A postoperativ. suspicion of tracheal rupture could dem.nd reintubation with the patient in full relaxation and an exam.nation by CT-scan or fiberscope before deciding a sim.le supportiv. therapy. We present our therapeutic experience in a fem.le patient who suffered from.tracheal injury during total thyroidectom. and describe a rev.ew of literature.

Thin m.gnetic Fe layers in thickness of 10–240nm.were deposited onto a wheel surface of CoFem.SiB am.rphous ribbons to check our concept of a new type of heterogeneous m.gnetoim.edance m.terials form.d by two different m.gnetic parts. The presence of an additional iron layer m.difies the m.gnetoim.edance response of the com.osite m.terial and leads to increase of the m.gnetoim.edance ratio from.330 to 345% at a frequency of 3.5m.z. Two possible m.chanism. are discussed for explanation to the observ.d behav.our. m.dification of the surface properties of the am.rphous ribbons m.y hav. certain potential for technological applications.

The identification of jets originating from.quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an im.ortant role in v.rious analyses perform.d at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard m.del m.asurem.nts and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the m.asurem.nt of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers dev.loped within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 Tev.proton–proton collision data with an integrated lum.nosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high perform.nces in rejecting jets from.gluon ov.r jets from.quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirem.nts on the num.er of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other com.ines sev.ral jet substructure observ.bles using a boosted decision tree.A m.thod is established to determ.ne the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsam.les defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and sim.lation are prov.ded for jets with transv.rse m.m.ntum.between 500 Gev.and 2 Tev.and for m.ltiple tagger working points.

Electrochem.cal tests and surface analysis were applied to study the corrosion behav.or and passiv. film.characteristics of three-dim.nsional-printed NiTi shape m.m.ry alloys fabricated by laser-powder bed fusion(LPBF) in artificial saliv. at 37.C. The passiv.ty of L-PBF NiTi shows to be influenced by the process param.ters and resulting m.rphological and physicochem.cal surface properties. The results show that the defects at the surface of L-PBF Ni Ti can prom.te the passiv.tion rate in the early stages of exposure but a slowly form.d passiv. film.shows the best corrosion protection. The thickness of the passiv. film.is positiv.ly correlated with its corrosion protectiv. perform.nce. The L-PBF NiTi alloy prepared at a linear energy density of 0.2 J·m.(-1) and v.lum.tric energy density of 56 J·m.^(-3) shows the least defects and best corrosion protection. An outer Ti-rich and inner Ni-rich dense passiv. film.could be also obtained showing higher corrosion resistance.

First report of L1014F kdr m.tation in Culex quinquefasciatus in m.xico

The L1014F m.tation in the v.ltage-sodium.channel gene has been associated with resistance to DDT and pyrethroids in v.rious arthropod species including m.squitoes. We determ.ned the frequency of the L1014F kdr m.tation in 16 field populations of Culex quinquefasciatus from.Northeastern m.xico collected between 2008 and 2013. The L1014F was present in all populations analyzed with the lowest frequency （3.33%） corresponding to the population from.m.nclov. collected in 2012, and the highest frequency （63.63%） from.the m.nterrey population collected in 2012. The presence of a kdr m.tation in populations of Cx. quinquefasciatus from.northeastern m.xico prov.des ev.dence ofpyrethroid resistance. This requires a special attention, considering that pyrethroid-based insecticides are com.only used in v.ctor-control cam.aigns, especially against Aedes aegypti （L.）.

The m.sm.tch between the photov.ltaic(Pv.cells absorption and the solar irradiance on earth is one of the m.jor lim.tations towards m.re efficient Pv.energy *** aspect was addressed by downshifting the solar irradiance on Earth through lum.nescent down-shifting layers based on lanthanidedoped surface-functionalized ionosilicas(ISs)em.edded in poly(m.thyl m.thacrylate)(Pm.A)coated on the surface of com.ercial Si-based Pv.*** IS-Pm.A hybrid m.terials exhibit efficient solar radiation harv.sting(spectral ov.rlap of^9.5×10^19 photons/(s·m.))and conv.rsion(quantum.yield^52%).The direct solar radiation and the down-shifted radiation are partially guided and lost through total internal reflection to the layer edges being unav.ilable for Pv.conv.rsion of the coated Pv.*** tuning the down-shifting layer thickness,it also acts as lum.nescent solar concentrator enabling the collection of the guided radiation by flexible Pv.cells applied on the borders of the down-shifting layer leading to an enhancem.nt of the Pv.energy conv.rsion from.5%(in the case of the single-use of the lum.nescent down-shifting layer)to^13%com.aring with the bare Pv.*** ov.rall electrical output of the dev.ce resulted in an absolute external quantum.efficiency increase of^32%for the optim.zed Eu^3+-based film. in the Uv.spectral region(com.ared with the bare Pv.dev.ce,which is am.ng the best v.lues reported so far).

On the use of ferroelectric m.terial LiNbO3 as nov.l photocatalyst in wastewater-fed m.crobial fuel cells

In this work, the use of lithium.niobate （LiNbO3）, a ferroelectric and photocatalyst m.terial, is inv.sti- gated as a new type of cathode catalyst for wastewater-fed single-cham.er m.crobial fuel cells （m.Cs）. Carbon cloth electrodes coated with LiNbO3 were studied with and without Uv.v.s irradiation to assess its photocatalytic behav.or in these dev.ces. The synthesized phase of LiNbO3 was characterized by X- ray diffraction, differential scanning calorim.try, particle size distribution, and transm.ssion electron m.croscopy analyses. The m.C containing a LiNbO3-based cathode exhibited a m.xim.m.open circuit potential and power output of 400 m. and 131 m./m.3, respectiv.ly, under irradiation. This cathode configuration also achiev.d the m.xim.m.chem.cal oxygen dem.nd rem.v.l of 84% after 120 h of m.C operation. These results show that ferroelectric m.terials such as LiNbO3 could be used as cathode cat- alysts in m.C dev.ces. As a com.lem.ntary analysis, the rem.v.l of the heav. m.tals detected in the wastewater was also m.nitored.
