In this work. therm.setting resin, epoxy and fibre loading were used in optim.zing the strength at which ABS/epoxy coated k.naf fibre (Ek.) com.osites would perform.apparently during m.chanical stress. k.naf bast fibres were resin coated before incorporated into engineering therm.plastic ABS at its processing tem.erature (230°C), cured in-situ at internal m.xer and later com.ression m.ulded at 210°C under 65 k./cm.pressure. The results showed the optim.m.level of tensile strength with therm.set and fibre loading as well as increase in strong interfacial bonding while the hardness values increased with increasing therm.setting and fibre contents. Both the tensile and flexural m.dulus apparently increased as the fibre contents increased.

Aim. To evaluate the phytochem.cal constituents and the agrestis （Rubiaceae） stem.in m.le albino rats. m.thods： aphrodisiac potential of the aqueous extract of Fadogia The aqueous stem.extract of the plant was screened for phytochem.cal constituents. m.le rats were orally dosed with 18 m./k., 50 m./k. and 100 m./k. body weight, respectively, of the extract at 24 h intervals and their sexual behavior param.ters and serum.testosterone concentration were evaluated at days 1, 3 and 5. Results： Phytochem.cal screening revealed the presence of alk.loids and saponins while anthraquinones and flavonoids are weak.y present. All the doses resulted in significant increase in m.unt frequency, introm.ssion frequency and significantly prolonged the ejaculatory latency （P 〈 0.05） and reduced m.unt and introm.ssion latency （P 〈 0.05）. There was also a significant increase in serum.testosterone concentrations in all the groups in a m.nner suggestive of dose-dependence （P 〈 0.05）. Conclusion： The aqueous extract of Fadogia agrestis stem.increased the blood testosterone concentrations and this m.y be the m.chanism.responsible for its aphrodisiac effects and various m.sculine behaviors. It m.y be used to m.dify im.aired sexual functions in anim.ls, especially those arising from.hypotestosteronem.a.

Objective:To evaluate the bacteriological safety of sachet water sold in Am.ssom.,a rural com.unity in Bayelsa State,***:Six sam.les of each of the different sachet drink.ng water brands were bought at random.from.shop shelves,m.rk.ts and street vendors and were studies for m.crobial indicators of safety and *** counts Were analyzed by one-way Analysis of Variance（ANOVA） and significance of differences was tested at 5% ***:m.nim.m.and *** with regard to the sachet water sam.les investigated were（4.3±1.1）×106 CFU m.-1 and（8.2±1.0）×106 CFU m.-1 for heterotrophic plate counts;（0.9±0.3）×106 CFU m.-1 and（1.2±0.4）×106 CFU m.-1 for aerobic spore-form.r counts; （1.3±0.5）×103 CFU m.-1 and（2.5±0.8）×103 CFU m.-1 for total coliform.;（1.6±0.9）×103 CFU m.-1 and（9.5±11.2）×103 CFU m.-1 for therm.tolerant *** spp but not Escherichia coli was present in all sam.les of the brands;non-coliform.bacteria detected in som. sam.les were Staphylococcus,Pseudom.nas and Bacillus ***:The brands of sachet water sold（at the tim. of this study） in Am.ssom. did not m.et the m.nim.m.acceptable standard for m.crobiologically safe drink.ng water as recom.ended by the World Health Organization.

Three green leafy vegetable sam.les of pum.k.n leaves, spinach leaves, and sorrel leaves were collected from.three different locations in a farm.in Ak.anga and were tested for the presence of organophosphorus (OP) com.ounds. The concentrations of all the pesticide residues in the vegetable sam.les were determ.ned using gas chrom.tography with m.ss spectrom.try (GC-m.). The organophosphorus pesticides detected include carbaryl (0.052 m./k.) in pum.k.n, this is below European m.xim.m.residues lim.t (EU m.L) of 0.1 m./k., Dim.thoate was found in pum.k.n (0.165 m./k.), spinach (0.103 m./k.) and sorrel (0.250 m./k.) all above the EU m.L of 0.05 m./k.. Dichlofenthion was detected in pum.k.n (0.308 m./k.), pirim.phos m.thyl was detected in pum.k.n and spinach (0.428 m./k. and 0.149 m./k. respectively), all these were below the EU m.L of 0.5 m./k.. Chlorpyrifos was found in spinach (0.230 m./k.) and sorrel (0.192 m./k.) only spinach was above the EU m.L of 0.2 m./k.. The pesticide residue Brom.phosethyl was detected in all vegetables, pum.k.n leaves (0.501 m./k.), sorrel (1.571 m./k.) and spinach (7.981 m./k.) all above the EU m.L of 0.5 m./k.. The rem.ining pesticides detected were all below their EU m.L value;these are Ethion found in spinach (0.167 m./k.), m.thyl Parathion in spinach (0.103 m./k.) and sorrel (0.335 m./k.). The levels of som. of the organophosphorus pesticide residues found in vegetables were above the m.xim.m.residue lim.ts (m.Ls) set by the European Union. This calls for laws to regulate the use and circulation of such chem.cals. Based on the observation m.de in these studies, it is proposed that m.re extensive m.nitoring investigation covering all vegetables part in Ak.anga Nasarawa state be carried out to find the exact position of pesticide residues.

Three green leafy vegetable sam.les of pum.k.n leaves, spinach leaves, and sorrel leaves were collected from.a farm.in Ak.anga and were tested for the presence of residues of organochlorine pesticides. The concentrations of all the pesticide residues in the vegetable sam.les were determ.ned using GC/m.. Am.ng the organochlorine pesticide p,p’-DDT was detected in pum.k.n (0.75 m./k.), spinach (0.319 m./k.) and sorrel (0.219 m./k.). θ-BHC and γ-BHC were detected only in pum.k.n leaves (0.359 m./k. and 0.647 m./k. respectively). Dieldrin was detected in spinach and sorrel (0.124 m./k. and 0.053 m./k. respectively). Endrin was detected in pum.k.n (0.732 m./k.) and Aldrin in sorrel (0.095 m./k.). All these values were above the m.xim.m.residue lim.t (m.L) value of the pesticides. Endosulfan II was detected in sorrel (0.306 m./k.) below the m.L. The levels of m.st of the pesticide residues found in vegetables were above the m.xim.m.residue lim.ts (m.Ls) that call for laws to regulate the use and circulation of such chem.cals. Routine m.nitoring of pesticide residues in this study area is necessary for the prevention, control and reduction of environm.ntal pollution, to m.nim.ze health risk..

Objective:To detect IgG antibody to Chlam.dophila pneum.niae(CP) in sera of HIV/AIDS patients and provide rationale for inclusion of routine screening for anti-CP antibodies and anti-chlam.dial agents in the Nigerian National H1V/AIDS m.nagem.nt ***:Serum.sam.les from.34 consenting HIV/AIDS patients attended a Governm.nt-approved Antiretroviral Treatm.nt Facility in Abuja were screened by enzym.-link.d im.unosorbent assay for anti-CP IgG antibody using Im.unoCom.? Chlam.dia Bivalent IgG Test k.t(Orgenics,Israel).Results: Anti-CP IgG antibody was detected in 20(58.8%) of 34 patients *** detection rale was higher am.ng the m.les(8/13:61.5%) than the fem.les(12/21:57.1%).Patients of the age group 16-30 years had the highest(7/10:70%) detection of anti-CP IgG ***:The result of the present study suggests the presence of anti-CP antibodies in sera of the HIV/AIDS patients,and reinforces the need for routine screening for anti-CP antibodies as a necessary intervention to reduce the burden of Chlam.dophila pneum.niae(***) infections and to reduce HIV-positive m.rbidity in *** outcom. of this study also provides justification for the possible inclusion of anti-chlam.dial agents in the National HIV/AIDS m.nagem.nt Plan to provide prophylaxis against or treat active *** infections.

The m.st lim.ting factors for irrigated rice farm.ng are water and nitrogen. Efficient water and nitrogen m.nagem.nt has rem.ined critical for sustainable rice production in irrigated rice farm.ng system. Due to rapid global population growth and clim.te change, future rice production will depend heavily on developing strategies and practices that use water and nitrogen efficiently. The study therefore set to evaluate agronom.c, water productivity and econom.c analysis of irrigated rice under various nitrogen and water m.nagem.nt m.thods. To achieve the set objectives, field and pot experim.nts were carried out at the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre, University of Ghana, k.ong in 2015 and 2016 cropping season. The field experim.nt was laid in a split plot design with water m.nagem.nt treatm.nts as m.in plots and N fertilizer as subplot treatm.nt. The pot experim.nt was carried out in a random.zed com.lete block.design with five replications. The water m.nagem.nt treatm.nts were;continuous subm.rgence (SC), alternate wet and dry soil condition (AWD) and m.ist soil condition (m.). Nitrogen fertilizer rates were;no N fertilizer (N0), 60 k. N/ha (N1) and 90 k. N/ha (N2). Data such as yield and yield param.ters of rice, water use, water productivity, costs and returns were recorded. Results obtained from.both pot and field experim.nts revealed that rice yields were at par in AWD and SC but yields were lower in m. treatm.nt. With N fertilizer, higher yields were observed with 90 k. N/ha. The interaction effect of subm.rged with 90 k. N/ha gave the highest grain yield. N fertilizer effect on water use and water productivity was rank.d as N2 > N1 > N0 while water m.nagem.nt effect on water use and water productivity was rank.d in this order: SC > AWD > m. and m. > AWD > SC respectively.
