BACKGROUND Prim.ry thum. carpom.tacarpal(Cm.)osteoarthritis is one of the m.st com.on conditions encountered by hand *** the vast num.er of operations that have been proposed,none have dem.nstrated results significantly superior to trapeziectom. *** The purpose of our study was to determ.ne why surgeons opt for their technique in treating Cm. *** A cross-sectional survey of active m.m.ers of the Am.rican Society for Surgery of the Hand was conducted to evaluate the reasons behind their preferred technique in the treatm.nt of isolated thum. Cm. *** were contacted by em.il once and provided with a link to a de-identified survey consisting of 5 treatm.nt questions and 5 dem.graphic *** Of 950 responses were received.40.5%of surgeons preferred trapeziectom.+ligam.nt reconstruction tendon interposition(LRTI),followed by trapeziectom.+suspensionplasty(28.2%),suture button suspension(5.9%),trapeziectom. alone(4.6%),prosthetic arthroplasty(3.2%),arthrodesis(1.1%),and other(6.6%).Proponents of trapeziectom.+LRTI cited fam.liarity(73.2%),exposure during fellowship(48.8%)and less proxim.l m.gration(60%)to be the m.in reasons affecting their *** who preferred trapeziectom.+suspensionplasty m.st reported sim.licity(74.9%),fewer com.lications(45.3%),less proxim.l m.gration(43.8%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(42.7%).Advocates of suture button suspension cited avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(80.4%),shorter im.obilization(76.8%),and quicker recovery(73.2%)with their *** of trapeziectom. alone cited sim.licity(97.7%),fewer com.lications(86.4%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(59.1%).In their com.ents,45%of surgeons choosing trapeziectom. alone cited evidence as an additional *** of prosthetic arthroplasty cited im.roved pinch strength(83.3%)and im.roved range of m.tion(63.3%),while those preferring arthrodesis cited better pinch strength(90%)and freque

Ribozym.s are widespread, and catalyze som. extrem.ly im.ortant reactions in the cell. m.chanistically m.st fall into one of two classes, using either m.tal ions or general acid-base catalysis. The nucleolytic ribozym.s fall into the latter class, m.stly using nucleobases. A sub-set of these use a com.ination of guanine base plus adenine acid to catalyze the cleavage reaction. New ribozym.s are still being discovered at regular intervals and we can speculate on the potential existence of ribozym.s that catalyze chem.stry beyond phosphoryl transfer reactions, perhaps using sm.ll-m.lecule coenzym.s.

Obj.ctive:Fem.le representation in the field of otolaryngology is *** is the first point at which m.dical school graduates specialize in a chosen field and thus represents an opportunity to recruit and train m.re fem.le *** study sought to identify program.factors associated with greater fem.le representation am.ng resident ***:Departm.ntal websites of all 124 otolaryngology residency program. in the United States and Puerto Rico were exam.ned for a list of *** program. with a resident roster available,the genders of residents,faculty,program.directors,and chairpersons were *** and city population for each program.was also recorded,as was fem.le resident *** were com.ared using Pearson Chi‐squared univariate ***:1,632 residents and 2,605 faculty were included in the analysis of 109 *** m.dian fem.le resident representation was 40%.Program. with larger faculty sizes,m.re fem.le faculty,and urban location were associated with an above‐m.dian fem.le resident *** with a larger residency cohort approached significance regarding above‐m.dian fem.le resident *** fem.le faculty representation,program.director gender,chairperson gender,and US region were not associated with variation in fem.le resident ***:Greater fem.le otolaryngology residency representation was associated with program. having an urban location and greater num.ers of fem.le and total *** was also likely that a larger resident cohort size m.y affect fem.le resident *** proportions of fem.le faculty,program.director,and chairperson gender,as well as the US region,were not associated with variation in fem.le resident gender representation.

Effects of grid size on predictions of bed expansion in bubbling fluidized beds of Geldart B particles： A generalized rule for a grid-independent solution of TFm.sim.lations

Num.rical sim.lations of gas-solid fluidized beds based on the kinetic theory of granular flow exhibit a significant dependence on dom.in discretization. Bubble form.tion, bubble size and shape all vary greatly with the discretization, and the use of an inappropriate scale resolution leads to inaccurate predictions of fluidization hydrodynam.cs. In this study, grid-independent solutions of the two fluid m.del were exam.ned by com.aring the bed expansions obtained from.num.rical sim.lations with experim.ntal results and em.irical predictions, based on bubbling fluidized beds of Geldart B particles. Grid indepen- dence was achieved with a grid resolution equal to 18 tim.s the particle diam.ter. The sim.lation results were com.ared with previously published data for verification purposes. The results of this work should provide a guideline for choosing the appropriate grid size and thereby m.nim.ze the tim. and expense associated with large sim.lations.

Surface-effects-dom.nated therm.l and m.chanical responses of zinc oxide nanobelts

t m.lecular dynam.cs （m.） sim.lations are carried out to characterize the m.chanical and therm.l responses of [011^-1]-oriented ZnO nanobelts with lateral dim.nsions of 21.22A × 18.95 A, 31.02A× 29.42 A, and40.81A ×39.89A over the tem.erature range of 300-1000 K. The Young＇s m.dulus and therm.l conductivity of the nanobelts are evaluated. Significant surface effects on properties due to the highsurface-to-volum. ratios of the nanobelts are observed. For the m.chanical response, surface-stress-induced internal stress plays an im.ortant role. For the therm.l response, surface scattering of phonons dom.nates. Calculations show that the Young＇s m.dulus is higher than the corresponding value for bulk ZnO and decreases by -33% as the lateral dim.nsions increase from.21.22 A × 18.95A to 40.81 A × 39.89A. The therm.l conductivity is one order of m.gnitude lower than the corresponding value for bulk ZnO single crystal and decreases with wire size. Specifically, the conductivity of the 21.22 A × 18.95 A belt is approxim.tely （31-18）% lower than that of the 40.81 A × 39.89 A belt over the tem.erature range analyzed. A significant dependence of properties on tem.erature is also observed, with the Young＇s m.dulus decreasing on average by 12% and the conductivity decreasing by 50% as tem.erature increases from.300 K to 1000 K.

Spatial distribution of archaeal and bacterial am.onia oxidizers in the littoral buffer zone of a nitrogen-rich lake

The spatial distribution and diversity of archaeal and bacterial am.onia oxidizers （AOA and AOB） were evaluated targeting am.A genes in the gradient of a littoral buffer zone which has been identified as a hot spot for N cycling. Here we found high spatial heterogeneity in the nitrification rate and abundance of am.onia oxidizers in the five sam.ling sites. The bacterial am.A gene was num.rically dom.nant in m.st of the surface soil but decreased dram.tically in deep layers. Higher nitrification potentials were detected in two sites near the land/water interface at 4.4–6.1 μg NO2-N/（g dry weight soil·hr）, while only 1.0–1.7 μg NO2-N/（g dry weight soil·hr） was m.asured at other sites. The potential nitrification rates were proportional to the am.A gene abundance for AOB, but with no significant correlation with AOA. The NH4＋ concentration was the m.st determ.native param.ter for the abundance of AOB and potential nitrification rates in this study. Higher richness in the surface layer was found in the analysis of biodiversity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that m.st of the bacterial am.A sequences in surface soil were affiliated with the genus of Nitrosopira while the archaeal sequences were alm.st equally affiliated with Candidatus ‘Nitrososphaera gargensis’ and Candidatus ‘Nitrosocaldus yellowstonii’. The spatial distribution of AOA and AOB indicated that bacteria m.y play a m.re im.ortant role in nitrification in the littoral buffer zone of a N-rich lake.

Effect of Pearlite Interlam.llar Spacing on Predom.nant Abrasive Wear m.chanism.of Fully Pearlitic Steel

The aim.of this investigation was the determ.nation of the predom.nant wear m.chanism.on three-body abrasion of fully pearlitic low alloy steel. Furtherm.re, the effect of pearlite interlam.llar spacing on wear behavior was investigated. For this purpose, the sam.les were subj.cted to the different heat treating to attaining different interlam.llar spacing. m.chanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and im.act toughness were evaluated. Three body abrasion tests were conducted under ASTm.standard condition using a rubber wheel abrasion test apparatus. Abraded surface and wear debris were investigated by light optical m.croscopy and scanning electron m.croscopy. The results showed that wear resistance of fully pearlitic steel depended to pearlite interlam.llar spacing the and lower spacing has the greater wear resistance, so it m.y be due to subsurface work hardening and interlam.llar spacing and cem.ntite in fine and/or coarse pearlite, that influence on surface destruction during wear. Although during wear process the several m.chanism. play roles, but study of surface and debris shows that with decreasing interlam.llar spacing, the predom.nant m.chanism.wear changed from.ploughing to cutting m.de.
