Savannas cover a wide clim.tic gradient across large portions of.the Earth’s land surf.ce and are an im.ortant com.onent of.the terrestrial *** have been undergoing changes that alter the com.osition and structure of.their vegetation such as the encroachm.nt of.woody vegetation and increasing land-use *** the spatial and tem.oral dynam.cs of.savanna ecosystem.structure(e.g.,partitioning woody and herbaceous vegetation)and f.nction(e.g.,aboveground biom.ss)is of.high *** challenges include m.sclassif.cation of.savannas as f.rests at the m.sic end of.their range,disentangling the contribution of.woody and herbaceous vegetation to aboveground biom.ss,and quantif.ing and m.pping f.el ***,we review current(2010–present)research in the application of.satellite rem.te sensing in savannas at regional and global *** identif. em.rging opportunities in satellite rem.te sensing that can help overcom. existing *** provide recom.endations on how these opportunities can be leveraged,specif.cally(1)the developm.nt of.a conceptual f.am.work that leads to a consistent def.nition of.savannas in rem.te sensing;(2)im.roving m.pping of.savannas to include ecologically relevant inf.rm.tion such as soil properties and f.re activity;(3)exploiting high-resolution im.gery provided by nanosatellites to better understand the role of.landscape structure in ecosystem.f.nctioning;and(4)using novel approaches f.om.artif.cial intelligence and m.chine learning in com.ination with m.ltisource satellite observations,e.g.,m.lti-/hyperspectral,synthetic aperture radar(SAR),and light detection and ranging(lidar),and data on plant traits to inf.r potentially new relationships between biotic and abiotic com.onents of.savannas that can be either proven or disproven with targeted f.eld experim.nts.

The gold standard f.r curative treatm.nt of.locally advanced rectal cancer involves radical resection with a total m.sorectal excision(Tm.). Tm. is the m.st ef.ective treatm.nt strategy to reduce local recurrence and im.rove survival outcom.s regardless of.the surgical platf.rm.used. However, there are associated m.rbidities, f.nctional consequences, and quality of.lif.(QoL) issues associated with Tm.; these risks m.st be considered during the m.dern-day m.ltidisciplinary treatm.nt f.r rectal cancer. This has led to the developm.nt of.new surgical techniques to im.rove patient, oncologic, and QoL outcom.s. In this work, we review the evolution of.Tm. to the transanal total m.sorectal excision(TaTm.) through m.re traditional m.nim.lly invasive platf.rm.. The review the developm.nt, saf.ty and f.asibility, proposed benef.ts and risks of.the procedure, im.lem.ntation and education m.dels, and f.ture direction f.r research and im.lem.ntation of.the TaTm. in colorectal surgery. While satisf.ctory short-term.results have been reported, the procedure is in its inf.ncy, and long term.outcom.s and def.nitive results f.om.controlled trials are *** evidence f.r saf.ty and f.asibility accum.lates,structured training program. to standardize teaching,training, and saf. expansion will aid the saf. spread of.the TaTm..

Chem.cal looping com.ustion has the potential to be an ef.icient and low-cost technology capable of.contributing to the reduction of.the atm.spheric concentration of.CO_(2) in order to reach the 1.5/2°C goal and m.tigate clim.te *** this process,a m.tal oxide is used as oxygen carrier in a dual f.uidized bed to generate clean CO_(2) via com.ustion of.*** com.only,natural ores or synthetic m.terials are used as oxygen carrier whereas both m.st m.et special requirem.nts f.r the conversion of.solid *** oxygen carriers are characterized by higher reactivity at the expense of.higher costs versus the lower-cost natural *** determ.ne the viability of.both possibilities,a techno-econom.c com.arison of.a synthetic m.terial based on m.nganese,iron,and copper to the natural ore ilm.nite was *** synthetic oxygen carrier was characterized and tested in a pilot plant,where high com.ustion ef.iciencies up to 98.4%and carbon capture rates up to 98.5%were *** techno-econom.c assessm.nt resulted in CO_(2) capture costs of.75 and 40€/tCO_(2) f.r the synthetic and natural ore route respectively,whereas a sensitivity analysis showed the high im.act of.production costs and attrition rates of.the synthetic *** synthetic oxygen carrier could break even with the natural ore in case of.lower production costs and attrition rates,which could be reached by adapting the production process and recycling *** com.arison to state-of.the-art technologies,it is dem.nstrated that both routes are viable and the capture cost of.CO_(2) could be reduced by im.lem.nting the chem.cal looping com.ustion technology.

The f.m.ly Alaudidae,larks,com.rises 93-100 species(depending on taxonom.)that are widely distributed across Af.ica and Eurasia,with single species extending their ranges to North and northernm.st South Am.rica and Australia.A decade-old m.lecular phylogeny,com.rising~80%of.the species,revealed m.ltiple cases of.parallel evolution and large variation in rates of.m.rphological evolution,which had m.sled taxonom.sts into creating m.ny non-m.nophyletic ***,we reconstruct the phylogeny of.the larks,using a dataset covering one m.tochondrial and 16 nuclear loci and com.rising all except one of.the currently recognised species as well as several recently proposed new species(in total 133 taxa;not all loci available f.r all species).We provide additional support using genom.-wide m.rkers to inf.r a genus-level phylogeny based on near-com.lete generic sam.ling(in total 51 sam.les of.44 taxa across 40 species).Our results conf.rm.the previous f.ndings of.ram.ant m.rphological convergence and divergence,and reveal new cases of.paraphyletic *** propose a new subf.m.ly classif.cation,and also that the genus m.raf.a is divided into f.ur genera to produce a m.re balanced generic classif.cation of.the *** study supports recently proposed species splits as well as som. recent lum.s,while also questioning som. of.the *** com.rehensive phylogeny will f.rm.an im.ortant basis f.r f.ture studies,such as com.arative studies of.lark natural history,ecology,evolution and conservation.

Stroke in the Young Adults: 6-Year Case Series of.Com.unity Hospital Stroke Unit

Stroke etiology in young adults and older patient dif.ers considerably, as well as epidem.ology and clinical f.atures vary according to geographical criteria. To im.rove clinical m.nagem.nt and optim.ze diagnostic work-up of.young adults with acute cerebrovascular events, we analyzed retrospectively data of.6-year stroke unit case series. In this hospital case series study, we enrolled 145 patients with acute cerebrovascular events aged 16 to 49, consecutively adm.tted to a Com.unity Hospital Hub Stroke Unit. We studied risk f.ctors f.r stroke, the distribution of.acute cerebrovascular events, stroke subtype, length of.stay and clinical outcom.: 70% of.patients were adm.tted f.r acute ischem.c event (45 f.m.le-f. 57 m.le-m., 10.5% intracranial hem.rrhages (5f. 10m., 2.7% subarachnoid hem.rrhage (2f. 2m., 2% venous sinus throm.osis (3f., 14.5 f.r acute ischem.c attack (12f. 9m.. Am.ng ischem.c stroke patients, the etiology was as f.llows: atherothrom.osis 29.4%, cardioem.olism.19.6%, arterial dissection 13.7%, other determ.ned causes 8.8%, lacunar stroke 5.8%, and undeterm.ned causes 22.54%. 15% of.ischem.c young patients were treated with r-TPA. The m.jority of.patients returned hom. at discharge, whereas 30% needed intensive rehabilitation program.e to regain independence in the activity of.daily living. Dedicated health care program.e targeting prevention and optim.zing treatm.nt of.acute cerebrovascular events in young adults are desirable to im.rove prognosis am.ng this socioeconom.cally active age group.

Plants need tight regulation of.photosynthetic electron transport f.r survival and growth under environ- m.ntal and m.tabolic conditions. f.r this purpose, the linear electron transport （LET） pathway is supple- m.nted by a num.er of.alternative electron transf.r pathways and valves. In Arabidopsis, cyclic electron transport （CET） around photosystem.I （PSI）, which recycles electrons f.om.f.rrodoxin to plastoquinone, is the m.st investigated alternative route. However, the interdependence of.LET and CET and the relative im.ortance of.CET rem.in unclear, largely due to the dif.iculties in precise assessm.nt of.the contribution of.CET in the presence of.LET, which dom.nates electron f.ow under physiological conditions. We there- f.re generated Arabidopsis m.tants with a m.nim.l water-splitting activity, and thus a low rate of.LET, by com.ining knockout m.tations in Psb01, PsbP2, PsbQ1, PsbQ2, and PsbR loci. The resulting 45 m.tant is viable, although m.ture leaves contain only ~20% of.wild-type naturally less abundant Psb02 protein. 45 plants com.ensate f.r the reduction in LET by increasing the rate of.CET, and inducing a strong non-photochem.cal quenching （NPQ） response during dark-to-light transitions. To identif. the m.lecular origin of.such a high-capacity CET, we constructed three sextuple m.tants lacking the qE com.onent of.NPQ （45 npq4-1）, NDH-m.diated CET （45 crr4-3）, or PGR5-PGRLl-m.diated CET （45 pgrS）. Their analysis revealed that PGR5-PGRLl-m.diated CET plays a m.jor role in ~pH f.rm.tion and induction of.NPQ in C3 plants. m.reover, while pgr5 dies at the seedling stage under f.uctuating light conditions, 45 pgr5 plants are able to survive, which underlines the im.ortance of.PGR5 in m.dulating the intersystem.electron transf.r.

Early Results of.Urothelial Carcinom. Screening in a Risk Population of.Coke Workers:Urothelial Carcinom. am.ng Coke Workers

Objective To present the protocol and the early results of.a urothelial carcinom. （UC） screening analysis perf.rm.d in a risk population of.coke workers. m.thods Between June 2006 and October 2008, 171 m.le workers （m.an age 43 years）, em.loyed in a Ligurian coke plant （Italiana Coke S.r.l） and exposed to polycyclic arom.tic hydrocarbons （PAHs） f.r a m.dian period of.16 years, underwent screening f.r UC. Urological evaluation included m.dical history, physical exam.nation, routine laboratory tests, urine analysis, urinary cytology and uCyt＋ assay. In the event of.signs and sym.tom. suggestive of.UC or positive urinary tests, the workers were also subjected to urinary ultrasonography and cystoscopy with biopsy of.any suspicious lesions. Results Regarding the laboratory tests, 19/171 （11%） uCyt＋ sam.les were considered inadequate and were excluded f.om.the outcom.s assessm.nt. Overall, urine analysis, cytology and uCyt＋ were positive in 18/152 （12%） subjects who showed no evidence of.UC at the scheduled check-ups. No signif.cant association was identif.ed between m.rker positivity and occupational activity. Conclusions Our results f.il to show an increased risk of.UC am.ng the coke workers evaluated. However, they will need to be conf.rm.d in the f.ture by a larger enrollm.nt and a longer f.llow-up in order to assess the def.nitive risk f.r UC af.er exposure to coke.
