Azo dyes are extensively used in textile dyeing and other industries. Ef.luents of.dying industries are specially colored and could cause severe dam.ge to the environm.nt. The anaerobic treatm.nt of.textile dying ef.luents is nowadays the pref.rred option, but it could generate carcinogenic arom.tic am.nes. Recently, yeasts have becom. a prom.sing altem.tive, com.ining unicellular growth with oxidative m.chanism.. This work reports the characterization of.the f.rst m.thylotrophic yeast with dye decolorizing ability, Candida boidinii m. 4035 and som. insights into its decoloration m.chanism. The analysis of.two selected m.dia revealed a possible two stages m.chanism.of.Reactive Black 5 decoloration. In glucose poor m.dia, decoloration is incom.lete and only the f.rst stage proceeds, leading to the accum.lation of.a purple com.ound. In m.dia with higher glucose concentrations, the yeast is able to decolorize totally an initial concentration of.200 m./L. The entire process is co-m.tabolic, being largely dependent on glucose concentration but being able to proceed with several nitrogen sources. m.nganese dependent peroxidase but not laccase activity could be detected during decoloration. Arom.tic am.nes do not accum.late in culture m.dia, supporting an oxidative decoloration m.chanism.of.unknown ecophysiological relevance.

An evaluation of.the incidence of.Crypticerya m.lticicatrices and m.conellicoccus hirsutus in Colom.ian Seaf.ower Biosphere Reserve in san Andrés, Providence and santa Catalina islands, f.om.m.d-August to m.d-Novem.er 2012 was m.de. 38 locations were sam.led, and 34% of.sites tested show an incidence of.C. m.lticicatrices oscillating between a range of.80%-100%, 24% with 40%-80% of.incidence, 18% between 10%-40% and 24% with a range of.0%-10%. The occurrence of.m. hirsutus f.uctuated between 0.5% and 17%. There were seven genera of.ants associated C. m.lticicatrices and 94 hosts of.this agriculturally im.ortant insect and we f.und high incidence of.associated sooty m.ld in C. m.lticicatrices hosts. Observations also contained som. developm.ntal stages of.C. m.lticatrices.

Skeletal health relies on architectural integrity and suf.icient bone m.ss, which are m.intained through a tightly regulated equilibrium.of.bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone f.rm.tion by osteoblasts. Genetic studies have linked the gene coding f.r low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein1(Lrp1) to bone traits but whether these associations are based on a causal m.lecular relationship is unknown. Here, we show that Lrp1 in osteoblasts is a novel regulator of.osteoclast activity and bone *** lacking Lrp1 specif.cally in the osteoblast lineage displayed norm.l osteoblast f.nction but severe osteoporosis due to highly increased osteoclast num.ers and bone resorption. Osteoblast Lrp1 lim.ted receptor activator of.Nf.κB ligand(RANKL) expression in vivo and in vitro through attenuation of.platelet-derived growth f.ctor(PDGf.BB) signaling. In co-culture, Lrp1-def.cient osteoblasts stim.lated osteoclastogenesis in a PDGf.β-dependent m.nner and in vivo treatm.nt with the PDGf. tyrosine kinase inhibitor im.tinib m.sylate lim.ted RANKL production and led to com.lete rem.ssion of.the osteoporotic phenotype. These results identif. osteoblast Lrp1 as a key regulator of.osteoblast-to-osteoclast com.unication and bone m.ss through a PDGf.RANKL signaling axis in osteoblasts and open perspectives to f.rther explore the potential of.PDGf.signaling inhibitors in counteracting bone loss as well as to evaluate the im.ortance of.f.nctional LRP1 gene variants in the control of.bone m.ss in hum.ns.

Young m.le rats were orally intubated with podophyllotoxin: Group I, control anim.ls, orally f.d with vehicle only; Group Ⅱ, f.d with an initial dose of.5 ***-1 b.w., f.llowed by a daily dose of.1.67 m.-kg-1 b.w. f.r 7d. Group III, f.d with an initial dose of.15 ***-1 b.w., f.llowed by a daily dose of.5 ***-1 b.w. f.r 7d. All anim.ls were sacrif.ced 72 h af.er the last dosing.Histopathological exam.nation revealed dose-related f.tty change of.the liver, atrophy andi degenerative changes of.the intestinal epithelial linings and testicular sem.nif.rous tubules. Depletion of.the pancreatic acinar cell granules was also apparent in the Group III anim.ls. No pathology, however, was observed in the kidneys. The present study dem.nstrated f.r the f.rst tim. degenerative changes in the liver, intestine, testis, and pancreas of.anim.ls ingested podophyllotoxin. These pathological changes correlate well with the clinical signs/sym.tom. of.abnorm.l liver f.nction, abdom.nal pain and diarrhea, and reduced serum.am.lase in hum.ns poisonded by podophyllum. Inhibition of.protein synthesis and m.tosis (disruption of.m.crotubules) are believed to be the underlying m.chanism. of.these changes observed in the anim.ls intoxicated by. podophyllotoxin.

Enhanced electrogastrography: A realistic way to salvage a prom.se that was never kept?

To enhance the clinical utility of.electrogastrography (EGG), which has been recorded since 1922, but is clinically unutilized. m.THODsan innovative m.thod to salvage the prom.se of.EGG is proposed by introducing a prelim.nary procedure, while m.intaining the electrodes, standardized equipm.nt, and signal processing utilized in the well-established EGG testing of.today. The proposed enhanced EGG (EEGG) protocol involves swallowing an ingestible capsule containing m.niature electronic oscillator em.edded in an expandable, self.disintegratable, biocom.atible pseudobesoar residing in the stom.ch f.r the duration of.the test. The benef.ts of.the proposed approach are outlined, tested and discussed in details. RESULTSExperim.nts were perf.rm.d on eight m.ngrel dogs (6f. 4m. 23.8 ± 3.3 kg). f.ur were adm.nistered an active EEGG capsule, while the rest were given a deactivated (battery rem.ved) capsule. Pharm.cologically f.cilitated gastric m.tility revealed a signif.cant (P m.tility indices obtained by f.rce transducers im.lanted directly on the stom.ch, and the m.tility indices obtained by EEGG. A particular em.hasis was m.de on preserving standard EGG-related hardware and sof.ware in order to f.cilitate the introduction of.the proposed EEGG in environm.nts which already utilize standard EGG testing. The expanded intragastric pseudobezoar containing the m.niature electronic oscillator was retained during the tests, and could be disintegrated on dem.nd. CONCLUSIONEnhancing standard EGG by an ingestible, self.expanding and self.disintegrating pseudobesoar containing a m.niature electronic oscillator can be an im.ortant avenue f.r clinical applicability of.this test.

On the deterring ef.ect of.a butterf.y＇s eyespot in juvenile and sub-adult chickens

Circular patterns, or eyespots, are com.on anti-predator f.atures in a variety of.anim.ls. Two def.nsive f.nctions have been docum.nted： large eyespots m.y intim.date predators, whereas sm.ller m.rginal eyespots m.y divert attacks. However, a given eyespot potentially serves both f.nctions, possibly depending on the predator＇s size and/or experience. Naive predators are potentially m.re likely to m.sdirect their attacks towards eyespots; alternatively, their typically sm.ller size would m.ke them.m.re intim.dated by the sam. eyespots. Here we test how juvenile and sub-adult naive chickens respond to a single eyespot on a butterf.y＇s wing. We presented the birds with dead wall brown butterf.ies, Lasiom.ata m.gera, that had their apical eyespot visible or painted over. We assessed the birds＇ responses＇ by （i） scoring their intim.dation reaction, （ii） whether they uttered alarm.calls and, （iii） if.they attacked the butterf.y and where they targeted their attacks. Results show that both age categories received higher intim.dation scores when of.ered a butterf.y with a visible eyespot. Juveniles were m.re intim.dated by the butterf.y than the sub-adults： they received higher intim.dation scores and were m.re prone to utter alarm.calls. m.reover, only sub-adults at- tacked and did so by pref.rentially attacking the butterf.y＇s anterior. We dem.nstrate an intim.dating ef.ect of.the type of.eyespot that has previously been shown only to divert attacks. We suggest that one and the sam. eyespot m.y serve two f.nctions relative to dif.erent predators; however, f.rther experim.nts are needed to disentangle the role of.predator identity and its link to size, on- togeny and experience [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 749-757, 2015].

Distribution and Ecology of.the Western Ecuador f.og Leptodactylus labrosus (Am.hibia: Anura: Leptodactylidae)

Leptodactylus labrosus is a terrestrial sit-and-wait predator; its diet includes ground-level, f.ssorial, and f.ying insects, and ants num.rically predom.nate. Bothrops asper is recorded as a predator of.L. labrosus. L. labrosus lives m.inly in deciduous and sem.-deciduous f.rests, where it is restricted to wet m.crohabitats, and occasionally in evergreen f.rests. L. labrosus inhabits northern, central, and southern regions of.western coastal Ecuador and northern and central western coastal Peru up to 700 m. and into the dry interandean valleys of.southern Ecuador and northern Peru up to 1 300 m. Its distribution encom.asses m.istly seasonally dry f.rest in coastal Ecuador and Peru. It also occupies m.ister areas towards the slopes of.the Andes where it is sym.atric with three other congeneric species, but at sites of.sym.atry the species show habitat segregation. The distribution pattern of.L. labrosus is shared by several other range-restricted am. phibians corresponding to the Tum.esian region, which should be recognized as an endem.c Am.hibian area. The zone between the Choco and Tum.esian regions, where L. labrosus gets in sym.atry with other Leptodactylus species, possess ecological and clim.tic characteristics that have shaped a unique f.una, including several endem.c taxa; and it should be recognized as the west Ecuadorian endem.c region.

In this work,we intend to perf.rm.a detailed study on the crystallization process of.PZT 53/47 nanostructured powders by starting out with an am.rphous precursor synthesized by a sol-gel based *** interests also lie in the f.asibility f.r controlling the average grain size of.the f.nal structure in the subm.cron range on an ab initio ***,f.urier transf.rm.inf.ared spectroscopy（f.-IR）,Ram.n（Stokes and Anti-Stokes）,X-ray dif.raction（XRD） and scanning electron m.croscopy（SEm. are used to exam.ne the m.crostructural characteristics based on previously reported dif.erential therm.l analysis/therm.l gravim.tric analysis（DTA/TGA） *** results show a crystallization tem.erature of.800℃ to attain pure perovskite phase with excellent m.rphological quality,average grain size 〈DG〉〈 300 nm.and with average crystallite size 〈DC〉〈15 nm.

m.so-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of.the Talas-f.rgana region of.the Kyrgyz Tien Shan revealed by low-tem.erature basem.nt and detrital therm.chronology

This study provides new low-tem.erature therm.chronom.tric data, m.inly apatite f.ssion track data on the basem.nt rocks in and adjacent to the Talas-f.rgana f.ult, in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan in the f.rst *** the second place, we also present new detrital apatite f.ssion track data on the m.so-Cenozoic sedim.nts f.om.f.ult related basins and surrounding intram.ntane basins. Our results conf.rm.m.ltistaged m.so-Cenozoic tectonic activity, possibly induced by the accretion of.the so-called Cim.erian blocks to the Eurasian m.rgin. New evidence f.r this m.lti-staged therm.-tectonic activity is f.und in the data of.both basem.nt and m.so-Cenozoic sedim.nt sam.les in or close to the Talas-f.rgana ***(U-Th)/He and apatite f.ssion track data constrain rapid Late TriassiceE arly Jurassic and Late JurassiceE arly Cretaceous basem.nt cooling in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan around 200 m. and 130 -100 m. respectively. Detrital apatite f.ssion track results indicate a dif.erent burial history on both sides of.the Talas-f.rgana f.ult. The apatite f.ssion track system.of.the Jurassic sedim.nts in the m.ddle Tien Shan unit east of.the Talas-f.rgana f.ult is not reset, while the Jurassic sedim.nts in the f.rgana Basin and Yarkand-f.rgana Basin, west of.the f.ult zone, are partially and in som. cases even totally reset. The totally reset sam.les exhibit Oligocene and m.ocene ages and evidence the Cenozoic reactivation of.the western Kyrgyz Tien Shan as a consequence of.the India-Eurasia convergence.

Results on stress analysis f.r single-crystal diam.nds are presented. Isolated crystals were studied by Ram.n m.pping and depth prof.ling techniques, using conf.cal m.croscopy. Diam.nds were deposited on m.lybdenum.and tantalum.by hot f.lam.nt and m.crowave CVD m.thods at growth rates between 10 and 30 μm.h-1. Crystals f.om.10 to 40 μm.size were exam.ned. Local stress was evaluated by analyzing the position, broadening and splitting of.the 1332 cm.1 Ram.n peak in a 3D m.pping. f.r the (001) orientation, the m.st stressed zone was f.und at the center of.the crystal base, close to the interf.ce with the substrate: a Ram.n peak around 1340 cm.1 was m.asured, corresponding to a pressure c.a. 3 GPa, according to our dynam.cal calculations. This peak disappears f.w m.crons out of.the center, suggesting that this highly concentrated stress sector was the nucleation zone of.the crystal. A shif.ing and slight broadening of.the 1332 cm.1 band was observed in the rest of.the crystal. The causes of.these ef.ects are discussed: they proved not to be due to anisotropic stress but to ref.active ef.ects. Sam. results were f.und f.r dif.erent crystal sizes and growth rates.
