Precipitation is the m.jor driver of ecosystem.functions and processes in sem.arid and arid regions. In such water- lim.ted ecosystem., pulsed water inputs directly control the belowground processes through a series of soil drying and rewetting cycles. To investigate the effects of sporadic addition of water on soil CO 2 efflux, an artificial precipitation event (3 m.) was applied to a desert shrub ecosystem.in the m. Us Sand Land of the Ordos Plateau in China. Soil respiration rate increased 2.8-4.1 tim.s im.ediately after adding water in the field, and then it returned to background level within 48 h. During the experim.nt, soil CO 2 production was between 2 047.0 and 7 383.0 m. m.-2 . In the shrubland, soil respiration responses showed spatial variations, having stronger pulse effects beneath the shrubs than in the interplant spaces. The spatial variation of the soil respiration responses was closely related with the heterogeneity of soil substrate availability. Apart from.precipitation, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen pool were also identified as determ.nants of soil CO2 loss in desert ecosystem..

Soil respiration is a key com.onent of the global terrestrial ecosystem.carbon cycle. The static opaque cham.er m.thod was used to m.asure the CO2 effiuxes from.soil of a sem.arid Aneurolepidium.chinense steppe and a Stipa krylovii steppe in the Xilin River Basin of Inner m.ngolia, China from.m.rch 2002 to Decem.er 2004. The results indicated that the soil respiration rates of the sem.arid Aneurolepidium.chinense steppe and the Stipa krylovii steppe were both relatively high from.m.d-m.y to m.d-Septem.er of each year and rem.ined low during the rest of the year. The m.nim.m.value of soil respiration occurred in Decem.er or January and negative effiuxes of CO2 appeared for several days during the non-growing season of individual years at the two sam.ling sites. A high annual variation was found in the two steppes with the coefficients of variance （CV） being over 94%, even high to 131%. The annual sum. of soil CO2 effiux of the Aneurolepidium.chinense steppe varied between 356.4 gC m.-2 yr^-1 and 408.8 gC m.-2 yr^-1, while those of the Stipa krylovii steppe in the three years were in the range of 110.6 gC m.-2 yr^-1 to 148.6 g Cm.-2 yr^-1. The m.an respiration rates of the Aneurolepidium.chinense steppe were significantly higher than those of the Stipa krylovii steppe in different statistical periods with the exception of the non-growing season. About 59.9% and 80.6% of the soil respiration variations in both steppes for the whole sam.ling period were caused by the changes of tem.erature and soil water content. In the Aneurolepidium.chinense steppe, the soil respiration rate has significant or extrem.ly significant positive correlation （r = 0.58 - 0.85, p 〈 0.05 or p 〈 0.01） with air tem.erature and ground tem.erature of the topsoil except in 2002; the unique contributions of tem.erature change to the soil respiration variation of the three years were 53.3%, 81.0% and 58.6%, respectively. Using the static opaque cham.er m.thod, the soil respiration rates （SR） were m.asured through the continuous experim.nts in situ in sem.arid Stipa grandis steppe in Xilin River Basin of Inner m.ngolia, China from.June 2001 to June 2003, in parallel, the difference between the SR and the ecosystem.respiration rates （TER） were com.ared. The results indicated that the seasonal variations of the SR and TER were obvious with higher em.ssions in growing season and a relatively low efflux level in non-growing season, furtherm.re, the negative effluxes were found in the observation site in winter; the annual CO2 efflux of total ecosystem.ranged from.160.5 gC/（m.2·a） to 162.8 gC/（m.2·a） and that of soil ranged from.118.7 gC/（m.2·a） to 152.3 gC/（m.2·a）. The annual SR accounted for about 74.0% to 93.5% of the annual TER, but the results of Analysis of Variance （ANOVA） indicated that the difference between the annual average TER and SR did not reach the significance level of 0.05. The TER was under sim.lar environm.ntal controls as SR, in growing seasons of drought years, the variations of soil m.isture at 0-10 cm.and 10-20 cm.depth could account for 79,1% 95.6% of the changes of the SR and TER, but in non-growing season, m.re than 75% of the variations of the SR and TER could be explained by the changes of the ground tem.erature of soil surface layers.

An enclosed cham.er technique was used to m.asure N 2O em.ssions from.intensively agricultural soils of the North China Plain during the periods of 1995—1996 and 1997—1998, to reflect distinct com.onents of winter wheat and sum.er m.ize growing seasons. The results showed that the continuous application of fertilizer in agricultural soils increased N\-2O em.ssions by a factor of 24.1—28.1, the calculated annual chem.cal N fertilizer\|transform.d N\-2O\|N em.ssions was 0.67%. Our results indicated that the application of organic m.nure also had a significant influence on soil N 2O em.ssions, which com.ined with the use of chem.cal N increased about 20% in a year. It was calculated that there were about 0.11% N of organic m.nure transform.d as N 2O N. Annual m.an N 2O em.ssion from.our study area of fertilized soils was estim.ted to be 57.1 μgN 2O/(m. 2·h). A weak correlation was also found between N 2O em.ssions and soil available nitrogen content NH + 4.

利用静态暗箱法, 对内蒙古锡林河流域沿降水梯度4种半干旱草地类型进行了连续2年的野外定位试验, 对比研究了沿降水梯度4种不同草地类型土壤呼吸通量的变化特征, 统计分析了水热因子对草地土壤呼吸通量特征的可能影响, 并建立了土壤呼吸通量与水热因子间的数值关系模式, 同时利用野外连续完整的观测数据对不同草地类型土壤 CO2 年排放量分别进行了估算. 结果表明: 土壤呼吸通量存在明显的季节变化规律, 沿降水梯度各草地类型土壤呼吸通量的季节变化型式基本相同, 各草地群落土壤呼吸均以春末和夏季较高, 秋冬季排放量较低, 不同草地类型冬季均观测到土壤呼吸的负通量,对其机制的进一步研究有利于对土壤年呼吸总量的准确估算; 沿降水梯度 4 种草地类型土壤年(或生长季)呼吸量均沿降水梯度递减, 表现为贝加尔针茅草原>羊草草原>大针茅草原>克氏针茅草原; 不同草地类型土壤呼吸通量在植物生长季与0～10 cm.以及 10～20 cm.土壤含水量均呈不同程度的正相关, 而与气温和表层土壤温度的相关性较弱, 4 种草地类型生长季内土壤表层含水量的变化通常能解释土壤呼吸通量变异的 70.2%～94.7%, 而在植物非生长季, 土壤呼吸通量更多地受气温及土壤表层地温的限制, 温度条件的变化能解释土壤呼吸通量变化的 70%以上.
