Num.rical sim.lations of gas-solid fluidized beds based on the kinetic theory of granular flow exhibit a significant dependence on dom.in discretization. Bubble form.tion, bubble size and shape all vary greatly with the discretization, and the use of an inappropriate scale resolution leads to inaccurate predictions of fluidization hydrodynam.cs. In this study, grid-independent solutions of the two fluid m.del were exam.ned by com.aring the bed expansions obtained from.num.rical sim.lations with experim.ntal results and em.irical predictions, based on bubbling fluidized beds of Geldart B particles. Grid indepen- dence was achieved with a grid resolution equal to 18 tim.s the particle diam.ter. The sim.lation results were com.ared with previously published data for verification purposes. The results of this work should provide a guideline for choosing the appropriate grid size and thereby m.nim.ze the tim. and expense associated with large sim.lations.

We consider stochastic sem.-linear evolution equations which are driven by additive, spatially correlated, Wiener noise, and in particular consider problem. of heat equation （analytic sem.group） and dam.ed-driven wave equations （bounded sem.group） type. We discretize these equations by m.ans of a spectral Galerkin projection, and we study the approxim.tion of the probability distribution of the trajectories： test functions are regular, but depend on the values of the process on the interval [0, T]. We introduce a new approach in the context of quantative weak error analysis for discretization of SPDEs. The weak error is form.lated using a determ.nistic function （It6 m.p） of the stochastic convolution found when the nonlinear term.is dropped. The regularity properties of the It6 m.p are exploited, and in particular second-order Taylor expansions em.loyed, to transfer the error from.spectral approxim.tion of the stochastic convolution into the weak error of interest. We prove that the weak rate of convergence is twice the strong rate of convergence in two situations. First, we assum. that the covariance operator com.utes with the generator of the sem.group： the first order term.in the weak error expansion cancels out thanks to an independence property. Second, we rem.ve the com.uting assum.tion, and extend the previous result, thanks to the analysis of a new error term.depending on a com.utator.

This study reports that the carbon star CGCS 673 is a sem.-regular(SR)variable star with a period of 135 d and an am.litude of 0.18m.g in the V-band.The light curve obtained by this study correlates well with the SR classification as the photom.tric data obtained show noticeable periodicity in the light changes of CGCS 673 that is occasionally interrupted by a period of irregular variability.The derived period and colour index obtained from.our data and those from.professional databases indicate that the attributes of this star fall within the param.ters of the SR class of variable stars.Following our notification of the discovery that this star is a variable source,CGCS 673 has received the AAVSO Unique Identifier of(AAVSO UID)000-Bm.-492.

The story of Hagar （Genesis 16 and 12） figures prom.nently in Bible＇s patriarchal narratives of both the elected and rejected with respect to divine prom.se. As the story of an abused foreign wom.n cast out into an inhospitable wilderness along with her son, the story raises troubling questions about the portrayal of dom.stic violence perpetuated by those otherwise celebrated as “faithful” within biblical narratives： Abraham.and his wife Sarah. In response to the relative silence on the topic of dom.stic violence am.ng clergy and leaders of churches, synagogues, and other “sacred spaces”, this paper explores a reading of Hagar＇s story that reclaim. her value as a hum.n being. With the help of post-Shoah reading sensitivities that expose strategies of dehum.nization, this reading m.kes visible the way in which the ancient writer/reactor of Genesis perform. as an advocate for Hagar in the face of the abuse heaped upon her. In so doing, Hagar＇s story is transform.d from.a narrative about a rejected “other” into one that exposes abuse by the so-called“elected.” Thus read, the story provides support and encouragem.nt for victim. in contem.orary religious cultures to step forward and tell their stories.

Objective:To system.tically review outcom.s for cautery-assisted palatal stiffening operation (CAPSO) as a treatm.nt for adult obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).m.thods:Five databases (including Pubm.d/m.DLINE) were searched through July 12,2017.Results:Eight studies (307 patients) m.t criteria.Overall,CAPSO alone (80 patients) im.roved AHI from.a m.an ± standard deviation (m.SD) of (16.8±11.9) to (9.9±10.9) events/h (41.1% decrease).m.xed CAPSO with/without tonsillectom. (92 patients) im.roved AHI from.a m. SD of (24.8 ± 12.6) to (10.6 ± 9.5) events/h (61.7% decrease).CAPSO with expansion pharyngoplasty (EP),(78 patients) im.roved AHI from.a m.± SD of (26.3 ± 17.7) to (12.6 ± 5.8) events/h (52.1% decrease).CAPSO alone (90 patients) im.roved lowest oxygen saturation (LSAT) by 5.4 points.m.xed CAPSO with/without tonsillectom. (77 patients) im.roved LSAT by 10.6 points,and CAPSO with EP (78 patients) im.roved LSAT by 5.2 points.Sleepiness im.roved (182 patients) from.an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 11.8 to 5.1,P m.7.9 to 2.5 on visual analog scales (0-10 scale),P m.roved by 41.0% for CAPSO alone,61.7% for CAPSO with tonsillectom. and 52.1% for CAPSO with expansion pharyngoplasty.Additionally,lowest oxygen saturation,sleepiness and snoring have also im.roved after CAPSO.

Drought periods are becom.ng m.re extrem. worldwide and the ability of plants to contribute towards atm.spheric flux is being com.rom.sed. Properly functioning stom.ta provide an exit for water that has been absorbed by the roots, funneled into various cell parts, and eventually released into the atm.sphere via transpiration. By observing the effects that weather conditions such as clim.te change m.y have on stom.tal density, distribution, and functioning, it m.y be possible to elucidate a portion of the m.chanism. trees use to survive longer periods of water stress. This study analyzed stom.tal density （SD）, stom.tal conductance （gs ）, CO2 assim.lation （A）, instantaneous water-use efficiency （WUEi ）, and transpiration （E） rates in six native tree species in the m.dwestern USA and showed that trees within the sam. ecotype followed sim.lar trends, but that trees within the sam. fam.ly did not when exposed to identical greenhouse conditions. Naturally drought tolerant tree species dem.nstrated lower g s and higher WUEi , while intolerant species had higher SD. This study showed negative or no correlation between SD and g s , A, E, and WUEi and positive correlations between E and A and gs and E.

Objective:Fem.le representation in the field of otolaryngology is lacking.Residency is the first point at which m.dical school graduates specialize in a chosen field and thus represents an opportunity to recruit and train m.re fem.le otolaryngologists.This study sought to identify program.factors associated with greater fem.le representation am.ng resident physicians.m.thods:Departm.ntal websites of all 124 otolaryngology residency program. in the United States and Puerto Rico were exam.ned for a list of residents.For program. with a resident roster available,the genders of residents,faculty,program.directors,and chairpersons were recorded.Location and city population for each program.was also recorded,as was fem.le resident representation.Program. were com.ared using Pearson Chi‐squared univariate tests.Results:1,632 residents and 2,605 faculty were included in the analysis of 109 program..The m.dian fem.le resident representation was 40%.Program. with larger faculty sizes,m.re fem.le faculty,and urban location were associated with an above‐m.dian fem.le resident representation.Program. with a larger residency cohort approached significance regarding above‐m.dian fem.le resident representation.Higher fem.le faculty representation,program.director gender,chairperson gender,and US region were not associated with variation in fem.le resident representation.Conclusions:Greater fem.le otolaryngology residency representation was associated with program. having an urban location and greater num.ers of fem.le and total faculty.It was also likely that a larger resident cohort size m.y affect fem.le resident representation.The proportions of fem.le faculty,program.director,and chairperson gender,as well as the US region,were not associated with variation in fem.le resident gender representation.
