The blood count is an easily achievable routine exam.and will it have specifics in the event of a neonatal bacterial infection? Hence, the present study with the objective of determ.ning the profile of the hem.gram.of newborns hospitalized for early bacterial neonatal infection. m.terial and m.thods: This was a cross-sectional study that took place from.June 27 to Septem.er 03, 2016 in the neonatology departm.nt of teaching hospital Gabriel Toure. Included were all neonates hospitalized for early neonatal bacterial infection (ENBI) and who had a blood count. Results: We included 227 patients, 64.8% of whom.were prem.ture. The sex ratio was 1.4. The infants were less than 24 hours old in 93.6% of the cases. The m.an hem.globin level was 16.435 g/dl [8.8 - 22.26]. Erythrocytopenia was found in 18.5% of cases. Anem.a was present in 17% of newborns. The average leukocyte was 15.228·103/m.3 [1.4 - 72]. Hyperleukocytosis and leukopenia were found in 12.32% and 6.6% respectively. Neutropenia and lym.hopenia were present in 14.5% and 30.8%. There was a correlation between leukocytosis of negative blood cultures (23/27) (p = 0.030). For Neutrophils, neutrophilia was m.re observed in term.neonates and neutropenia in prem.ture infants (p = 0.03). m.nocytosis was present in 13.6% of cases. One quarter (25.5%) of newborns had throm.ocytopenia. Conclusion: Hem.tological variations did not allow a specific profile of newborns hospitalized for early neonatal bacterial infection to be identified.

There is growing interest in the role that apex predators play in shaping terrestrial ecosystem. and m.intaining trophic cascades. In line with the m.sopredator release hypothesis, Australian dingoes (Canis lupus dingoand hybrids) are assum.d by m.ny to regulate the abundance of invasive m.sopredators, such as red foxesVulpes vulpesand feral catsFelis catus, thereby providing indirect benefits to various threatened vertebrates. Several recent papers have claim.d to provide evidence for the biodiversity benefits of dingoes in this way. Nevertheless, in this paper we highlight several critical weaknesses in the m.thodological approaches used in m.ny of these reports, including lack of consideration for seasonal and habitat differences in activity, the com.lication of sim.le track-based indices by incorporating difficult-to-m.et assum.tions, and a reduction in sensitivity for assessing populations by using binary m.asures rather than potentially continuous m.asures. Of the 20 studies reviewed, 15 of them.(75%) contained serious m.thodological flaws, which m.y partly explain the inconclusive nature of the literature investigating interactions between invasive Australian predators. We therefore assert that m.st of the “growing body of evidence” for m.so-predator release is m.rely an inconclusive growing body of literature only. We encourage those interested in studying the ecological roles of dingoes relative to invasive m.sopredators and native prey species to account for the factors we identify, and caution the value of studies that have not done so.

Recent petro-structural investigations on the Faboula gold deposit located in the Bougouni-Kékoro basin, in southern m.li, north-west of the Leo-m.n Shield, have provided new data on the nature and spatial organization of the lithostratigraphic units as well as their deform.tion style. The deposit is covered by a thick lateritic layer and is hosted by a m.tavolcano-sedim.ntary sequence of Paleoproterozoic age intersected by intrusive bodies and filled fractures of various shapes and types. The lithostratigraphic units consist of metagreywackes, metasiltstones, meta-argillites, slates and schists. Metagreywackes and metasiltstones are generally feldspathic, both may contain biotite and locally amphibole, just as slates may contain andalusite which is locally stretched. Plutonic units most often occur as stocks or as dikes on the drill core, up to 1 m. The metavolcano-sedimentary rocks are schistose and deformed under greenschist facies conditions, and locally they reach the epidote-amphibolite facies. The structural study revealed that the deposit is affected by several stages of deformation evolving from a ductile type to a brittle type via a ductile-brittle type. The dominant ductile and brittle-ductile deformations show a combination of isoclinal folding and strike-slip faults. Both the isoclinal folding and the strike-slip faults whose sigmoidal en-echelon tension gashes indicate a dextral m.vem.nt in the NNE-SSW direction are the result of the sam. Ovine pulm.nary adenocarcinom. (OPA) caused by an exogenous Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is prevalent in Indian sheep. In the present study, OPA was diagnosed in sheep by clinical signs, gross and histopathology and polym.rase chain reaction (PCR). Proviral DNA of exogenous JSRV was detected in lung tum.r tissues, m.diastinal lym.h nodes, blood and lung fluid sam.les from.natural cases of OPA by using U3-hn PCR and the PCR am.licons were sequenced to analyze nucleotide divergence. In total, six isolates were sequenced that had 96% - 100% hom.logy with a UK strain (AF105220.1) but m.re divergent from.a South African strain (m.0216) with 88% - 93% identity. The phylogenetic analysis revealed segregation of the six isolates into two clusters. In conclusion, this study is the first report on sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of JSRV in India and further studies are suggested to know the com.lete sequencing and genetic divergence of JSRV in Indian sheep.

New insights on the pathogenesis of pyloric stenosis of infancy. A review with em.hasis on the hyperacidity theory

A review is presented on the theories concerning the cause of pyloric stenosis with em.hasis on the prim.ry position of inherited hyperacidity in pathogenesis. Existing theories are critically analysed and the hyperacidity theory is precisely defined in the light of recent physiological insights into the gastrointestinal horm.ne m.tilin. The progressive fixed fasting hypergastrinaem.a within the first few weeks of life will, in the baby who inherits acid secretion at the top of the norm.l range, produce hyperacidity of sufficient severity to trigger the process of acid-induced work hypertrophy of the pylorus. The potential contribution of m.tilin is discussed. The baby who inherits a norm.l gastric acidity will not reach acid levels severe enough to trigger sphincter hypertrophy despite the early gastrin stim.lus. The potential threat will cease when gastrin naturally declines with age and the pyloric canal becom.s wider. Genetic factors clearly m.st also be involved and these are separately discussed.

Orienting a new generation of nurses: Expectations of the m.llennial new graduate

Generational diversity provides a unique quandary for nursing leaders and educators to enlist, orient, and retain nurses. m.llennials are the largest cohort since the baby Boom.rs and the age group from.which the nursing profession will build its future workforce. This study exam.ned the experiences of the new graduate nurse of the m.llennial generation as they navigate orientation in an acute care setting. Using a Web-based survey to conduct the study allowed nurses from.across the country to participate while providing easy access to the study questions. Analysis of the data through qualitative content analysis dem.nstrated a dom.nate them. of seeking structure while expecting an individualized orientation. The survey also revealed the im.ortance of the preceptor and m.nager in the perceived success of this generation’s transition and a need to assim.late into the professional role of RN. Recognizing that there is a need to prom.te a m.re individualized orientation with im.roved m.ntoring for novice nurses and their preceptors is evident and challenges nursing leaders and educators to rethink current practices to retain new nurses. Established roles within the hospital and individual nursing units are changing and traditional strategies for recruitm.nt and retention no longer apply. A structured orientation can facilitate the transition from.new graduate to professional nurse and assist in the retention of qualified nurses and ultim.tely safe patient care.

Rhizom.lic Chondrodysplasia Punctata Type I

Rhizom.lic Chondrodysplasia Punctata Type I is one of the rare peroxisom. disorders. We report the case of a newborn white m.le that developed seizures and skeletal dysm.rphism. The baby had short hum.rus bones with stippled epiphy-ses, consistent with the disease. He had also delay in m.elinization on brain m.I with bilateral subependym.l cysts over the atria and frontal horns of the lateral ventricles. Usually, infants with this disorder do not live long. This unfor-tunate little patient died at 5 weeks age from.pneum.nia. We em.hasize the im.ortance of antenatal screening for these disorders especially when a fam.ly history of dysm.rphism.is positive.

Vitam.n B12 in pregnancy: m.ternal and fetal/neonatal effects—A review

Vitam.n B12 m.intains norm.l folate m.tabolism.which is essential for cell m.ltiplication during pregnancy. No good data are available on what constitutes vitam.n B12 deficiency in pregnancy, nevertheless vitam.n B12 deficiency is frequently reported in pregnancy due to inadequate dietary intake of vitam.n B12 and a physiological decline of m.ternal vitam.n B12 concentrations. This decline can be explained by the increased m.ternal m.tabolic rate and active transport by the placenta to the fetus. If the m.ther is deficient during pregnancy, the baby m.y have low serum.vitam.n B12 concentrations at birth [1]. Vitam.n B12 deficiency during pregnancy is associated with preeclam.sia, fetal growth restriction, preterm.labor, neural tube defects, neonatal m.galoblastic anem.a and neonatal neurological sym.tom.. It has been suggested to im.rove vitam.n B12 status of wom.n in the periconceptional period by supplem.ntation of vitam.n B12, but no random.zed studies on the outcom. of such supplem.ntation have been published.
