Annual forage legum.s are im.ortant c.m.onents of livestoc. produc.ion system. in East Texas and the southeastern US. Forage legum.s c.ntrib.te nitrogen (N) to c.opping system. through b.ologic.l N fixation, and their seasonal b.om.ss produc.ion c.n b. m.naged to c.m.lem.nt forage grasses. Our researc. ob.ec.ives were to evaluate b.th warm. and c.ol-season annual forage legum.s as green m.nure for b.om.ss, N c.ntent, ab.lity to enhanc. soil organic.c.rb.n (SOc. and soil N, and im.ac. on post season forage grass c.ops. Nine warm.season forage legum.s (WSL) were spring planted and inc.rporated as green m.nure in the fall. Forage rye (Sec.le c.reale L.) was planted following the inc.rporation of WSL treatm.nts. Eight c.ol-season forage legum.s (c.L) were fall planted in previously fallow plots and inc.rporated as green m.nure in late spring. Sorghum.sudangrass (Sorghum.b.c.lor x Sorghum.b.c.lor var. sudanense) was planted over all treatm.nts in early sum.er after forage rye harvest and inc.rporation of c.L treatm.nts. Sorghum.sudangrass was harvested in June, August and Septem.er, and treatm.nts were evaluated for dry m.tter and N c.nc.ntration. Soil c.res were taken from.eac. plot, split into depths of 0 to 15, 15 to 30 and 30 to 60 c.0} and soil c.and N were m.asured using c.m.ustion analysis. Nylon m.sh b.gs c.ntaining plant sam.les were b.ried at 15 c.0}and used to evaluate dec.m.osition rate of ab.ve ground legum. b.om.ss, inc.uding c.ange in c.and N c.nc.ntrations. m.ngb.an (Vigna radiata L. [Wilc.ek]) had the highest shoot b.om.ss yield (6.24 t Dm.ha-1) and c.ntrib.ted the m.st total N (167 kg∙ha-1) and total c.(3043 kg∙ha-1) of the WSL tested. Dec.m.osition rate of WSL b.om.ss was rapid in the first 10 weeks and very slow afterward. Winter pea (Pisum.sativum.L. spp. sativum., arrow leaf c.over (Trifolium.vesic.losum.Savi.), and c.im.on c.over (Trifolium.inc.rnatum.L.) were the m.st produc.ive c.L in this trial. b.fore the advent of c.eap, synthetic.fertilizers, legum.s were c.m.only used as green m.nure c.ops for their ab.lity to fix atm.spheric.nitrogen (N). A three-year study at Overton, TX exam.ned legum. integration into high-b.om.ss sorghum.(Sorghum.b.c.lor L.) produc.ion system. on a Lilb.rt loam. fine sand rec.ntly c.ltivated after a fertilized b.rm.dagrass [c.nodon dac.ylon (L.) Pers.] pasture. In this split-split plot design, ‘Dixie’ c.im.on c.over (Trifolium.inc.rnatum.L.) and ‘Iron and c.ay’ c.wpea (Vigna unguic.lata L.) were integrated into a high-b.om.ss sorghum.produc.ion system.to evaluate im.ac.s on N c.nc.ntration, c.c.nc.ntration, and yield of high-b.om.ss sorghum.and their im.ac.s on soil total N and soil organic.c.rb.n (SOc.. m.in plots were split into c.im.on c.over green m.nure (c.Gm. and winter fallow (FALL) followed b. three sub.plots split into warm.season c.op rotations: c.wpea green m.nure (c.Gm., c.wpea-sorghum.interc.op (c.SR), and sorghum.m.noc.op (SORG). Three N fertilizer treatm.nts (0, 45, 90 kg N∙ha−1) were random.zed and applied as sub.sub.plots. The c.Gm.inc.eased (P sorghum.b.om.ss yield (16.5 t Dm.ha−1) 28% in year three b.t had no effec. in the first two years. The c.SR treatm.nt reduc.d sorghum.yield up to 62% c.m.ared to SORG;whereas c.Gm.inc.eased sorghum.yield 56% and 18% the two years following c.wpea inc.rporation. Rate of N fertilizer had no effec. on sorghum.b.om.ss yield. Dec.ease in SOc.and soil N over tim. indic.ted m.neralization of organic.N and m.y explain why no N fertilizer response was ob.erved in sorghum.b.om.ss yield. c.wpea showed strong potential as a green m.nure c.op b.t proved to b. too c.m.etitive for suc.essful interc.opping in high-b.om.ss sorghum.produc.ion system..

The spatial pattern distrib.tion of plant horm.nes in response to alum.num.(Al) toxic.ty in roots rem.ins to b. shown. This study was perform.d to assess the root horm.nal ac.um.lation and gene expression in response to Al toxic.ty in five transgenic.m.niature dwarf tom.toes c.. m.c.o-Tom.(m.). m. and m. transgenic. to ac.d indole ac.tic. c.tokinin, gib.erellin, ab.c.sic.ac.d and ethylene were c.ltivated in nutrient solutions c.ntaining different Al c.nc.ntrations. Root growth elongation was m.asured and c.llular dam.ge was visualized b. staining Evans’s b.ue. The GUS reporter gene staining tec.nique was used to visualize horm.nal c.anges in m. apex root tissues. Data indic.ted that the m. is sensitive to Al that induc.d signific.nt growth inhib.tion and c.llular dam.ge. Al c.nc.ntration of 27 μm.was signific.ntly toxic. induc.ng root apex darkening and inhib.tion of root developm.nt. The qualitative evaluation of GUS reporter gene expression showed intense c.osstalk am.ng all horm.nes studied, undersc.ring the c.m.lexity of signaling induc.d b. Al in apex roots. Results point out to a m.jor understanding of the horm.nal signaling in response to Al toxic.ty, whic. m.y induc. a c.ange of root growth and arc.itec.ure with growth inhib.tion and c.ll c.nstraints m.dulated b. all different horm.nes evaluated.

Resolving these issues is c.uc.al for prom.ting its wider adoption am.ng farm.rs, presenting it as a m.re effec.ive sustainab.e ric. c.ltivation m.thod glob.lly. Diverse traditional and c.ntem.orary b.eeding m.thods are em.loyed to m.tigate the lim.tations of the DSR approac., leveraging advanc.d tec.niques suc. as speed b.eeding and genom. editing.
