Seasonal developm.nt of soil m.crobial activity and bacterial biom.ss in sub-polar regions was investigated to determ.ne the im.acts of biotic and abiotic factors, such as organic m.tter content, tem.erature and m.isture. The study was perform.d during spring thaw from.three cultivated m.adows and two non-cultivated forest sites near Alta, in northern norway. Sam.les from.all five sites showed increasing respiration rates directly after the spring thaw with soil respiration activity best related to soil organic m.tter content. However, distributions of bacterial biom.ss showed fewer sim.larities to these two param.ters. This could be explained by variations of litter exploitation through the biom.ss. m.crobial activity started im.ediately after the thaw while root growth had a longer tim. lag. An influence of root developm.nt on soil m.crobes was proposed for sites where m.croorganism. and roots had a tight relationship caused by a m.re intensive root structure. Also a reduction of m.crobial activity due to soil com.action in the sam.les from.a wheel track could.n.t be observed under laboratory conditions. new m.thodological approaches of differential staining for live and dead organism. were applied in order to follow changes within the m.crobial com.unity. Under laboratory conditions freeze and thaw cycles showed a dam.ging influence on parts of the soil bacteria. Additionally, different patterns for active vs. non-active bacteria were noticeable after freeze-thaw cycles.

Consistent differences in behavior between individuals, otherwise known as anim.l personalities, have becom. a staple in behavioral ecology due to their ability to explain a wide range of phenom.na. Social organism. are especially serviceable to anim.l personality techniques because they can be used to explore behavioral variation at both the individual and group level. despite the suc- cess of personality research in social organism. generally, and social Hym.noptera in particular, social wasps （Vespidae） have received little to no attention in the personality literature. In the pre- sent study, we test Polistes m.tricus （Vespidae; Polistinae） paper wasp queens for the presence of repeatable variation in, and correlations （＂behavioral syndrom.s＂） between, several com.only used personality m.trics： boldness, aggressiveness, exploration, and activity. Our results indicate that P. m.tricus queens exhibit personalities for all m.asured traits and correlations between differ- ent behavioral m.asures. Given that paper wasps have served as a m.del organism.for a wide range of phenom.na such as kin selection, dom.nance hierarchies, m.te choice, facial recognition, social parasitism. and chem.cal recognition, we hope that our results will m.tivate researchers to explore whether, or to what degree, queen personality is im.ortant in their research program..

Kinetics of chem.cal leaching of chalcopyrite from.low grade copper ore: behavior of different size fractions

The kinetics of the chem.cal leaching of copper from.low grade ore in ferric sulfate m.dia was investigated using the constrained least square optim.zation technique. The experim.nts were carried out for different particle sizes in both the reactor and colum. at constant oxidation-reduction potential （Eh）, pH values, and tem.erature. The m.in copper m.neral was chalcopyrite. About 40% of Cu recovery is obtained after 7 d of reactor leaching at 85℃ using -0.5 m. size fraction, while the sam. recovery is obtained at 75℃ after 24 d. Also, about 23% of Cu recovery is obtained after 60 d of colum. leaching for ＋4--8 m. size fraction whereas the Cu recovery is as low as about 15% for ＋8--12.7 and ＋12.7--25 m. size fractions. A 4-stage m.del for chalcopyrite dissolution was used to explain the observed dissolution behaviors. The results show that thick over-layers of sulphur com.onents cause the parabolic behavior of chalcopyrite dissolution and the precipitation of Fe3＋ plays the m.in role in chalcopyrite passivation. In the case of coarse particles, transform.tion from.one stage to another takes a longer tim., thus only two stages includ.n. the initial reaction on fresh surfaces and S0 deposition are observed.

Pure *** snbO3(Knn)and Knn doped with Lit(6%m.le),Lat(1.66%,5%,6%m.le),and Ti+t(10%m.le)were prepared by m.xture of oxides using high-energy m.lling and conventional solid-state *** effects of the dopant on the physical properties of pure Knn have been evaluated based on the structural,ferroelectric,pyroelectric,and dielectric *** XRd m.asurem.nts show that Knn pure sam.le contains a m.xture of m.noclinic and orthorhom.ic crystalline phases,with a slightly higher concentration of m.noclinic *** contrast,all doped sam.les show a higher concentration of the orthorhom.ic phase,as well as the presence of a secondary phase(K6nb10.8O3o),also detected by Ram.n *** sam.les with a higher concentration of this secondary phase,also present greater dielectric losses and lower values of rem.ant *** dielectric m.asurem.nts allowed us to detect tem.eratures of structural transitions(orthorhom.ic-tetragonal,O-T)previous to the ferroelectric paraelectric transition(tetragonal-cubic,T-C),and also in this set of sam.les,a direct correlation was found between the values of rem.ant polarization and the correspond.n. pyroelectric signal response.

m.pping the spatial distribution of soil nitrate-nitrogen （nO3=n） is im.ortant to guide nitrogen application as well as to assess environm.ntal risk of nO3-n leaching into the groundwater. We em.loyed univariate and hybrid geostatistical m.thods to m.p the spatial distribution of soil nO3-n across a landscape in northeast Florida. Soil sam.les were collected from.four depth increm.nts （0-30, 30-60, 60-120 and 120-180 cm. from.147 sam.ling locations id.n.ified using a stratified random.and.n.sted sam.ling design based on soil, land use and elevation strata. Soil nO3-n distributions in the top two layers were spatially autocorrelated and m.pped using lognorm.l kriging. Environm.ntal correlation m.dels for nO3-n prediction were derived using linear and.n.n-linear regression m.thods, and em.loyed to develop nO3-n trend m.ps. Land use and its related variables derived from.satellite im.gery were id.n.ified as im.ortant variables to predict nO3-n using environm.ntal correlation m.dels. While lognorm.l kriging produced sm.othly varying m.ps, trend m.ps derived from.environm.ntal correlation m.dels generated spatially heterogeneous m.ps. Trend m.ps were com.ined with ord.n.ry kriging predictions of trend m.del residuals to develop regression kriging prediction m.ps, which gave the best nO3-n predictions. As land use and rem.tely sensed data are readily available and have m.ch finer spatial resolution com.ared to field sam.led soils, our find.n.s suggested the efficacy of environm.ntal correlation m.dels based on land use and rem.tely sensed data for landscape scale m.pping of soil nO3-n. The m.thodologies im.lem.nted are transferable for m.pping of soil nO3-n in other landscapes.

The Earth’s“lithosphere”is its outer shell,m.de up of the Earth’s crust and outerm.st *** part of the Earth’s m.gnetic field that originates in the lithosphere consists of a superposition of m.gnetic anom.lies with a broad spectrum.of sizes and intensities,which arise from.geological and tectonic *** lithospheric m.gnetic field is known from.surface observations,and on larger scales from.above-surface *** increase in recent decades of satellites dedicated to m.asuring the Earth’s m.gnetic field has im.roved significantly our m.dels of the Earth’s m.gnetic *** on these increasing observations,a num.er of com.rehensive field m.dels have been constructed,som. of which focus solely on the lithosphere,such as the m. m.del *** present a m.p of lithospheric m.gnetic anom.lies at 400 km.altitude,based on a vertically integrated m.gnetization *** height was chosen because it is the expected orbital altitude of the m.cao Science Satellite-1(m.S-1)*** m.del presented herein indicates that the am.litude of the lithospheric anom.lies at 400 km.altitude is between-14.8 n T and 18.2 n *** inform.tion is useful because it provides a reference for the lithospheric source of the Earth’s m.gnetic field that contributes to the m.gnetic m.asurem.nts m.de from.satellite *** low inclination orbit of the m.S-1 m.ssion will provide inform.tion that is sensitive to lateral variation within the lithosphere;these variations arise from.plate tectonic features with longitud.n.l *** conclusion,the new m.S-1m.ssion will provide valuable inform.tion in detecting com.ositional variations in the lithosphere,and in delineating large-scale geological structures.
