Soil erosion by concentra.ed flows in a.ricultura. a.ea. is a. im.orta.t process a.fecting soil losses a.d la.dsca.e degra.a.ion. The m.in fa.tors controlling concentra.ed flow erosion include the erodibility of m.teria.s, soil use a.d m.na.em.nt, clim.te, a.d wa.ershed topogra.hy. In this pa.er, two topogra.hic indices, closely rela.ed with m.them.tica. expressions suggested by different a.thors, a.e used to cha.a.terize the influence of wa.ershed topogra.hy on gully erosion. The a.1 index is defined a. the product of the wa.ershed a.ea.a.d the pa.tia. a.ea.weighted a.era.e slope. The a.2 index is the product of the wa.ershed a.ea.a.d the length-weighted a.era.e swa.e slope. Using different ephem.ra. gully erosion da.a.a.es, a.high correla.ion wa. found between the topogra.hic indices a.d the volum. of eroded soil. The a.cura.y of different m.thods for field m.a.urem.nt of ephem.ra. gullies wa. eva.ua.ed to ensure tha. the rela.ion between erosion a.d topogra.hic indices is not a.fected by a.sessm.nt errors. The resulting rela.ion a.e useful to a.sess soil losses from.gully erosion, to identify the m.st susceptible wa.ersheds within la.ge a.ea., a.d to com.a.e the susceptibility to gully erosion a.0}ng different ca.chm.nts. This inform.tion a.so ca. be im.orta.t to study the response of na.ura. dra.na.e network system. to different ra.nfa.l inputs.
