Bedload governs riverbed channel variations and m.rphology, it is necessary to determ.ne bedload discharge through an arbitrary cross section in a m.untain fiver. A new system.with subm.rged load cells has been developed to directly m.asure bedload discharge. The system.consists of：（1） an iron box which is 1 m.long, 0.5 m.wide and 0.1 m.in depth, （2） two subm.rged load cells 0.7 m.apart, （3） a pressure sensor and, （4） an electrom.gnetic velocity m.ter. This system.has been designed to exclude the effect of the hydraulic pressure of water on direct m.asurem.nts of bedload particle weight. Initial tests in a laboratory were conducted to exam.ne the accuracy of m.asurem.nts with the system.under aerial conditions. The system.has been installed in the supercritical flum. in Ashi-arai-dani River of the Hodaka Sedim.ntation Observatory of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute （DPRI） of Kyoto University to obtain bedload discharge under natural conditions. Flum. tests were conducted in this channel by artificial supply of uniform.sedim.nt particles of several grain sizes. The average velocity of the sedim.nt particles near the bed was estim.ted using cross-correlation functions for weight waves obtained by the two load cells, Bedload discharge calculations were based on tim. integration of the product of sedim.nt velocity and sedim.nt weight obtained by the two load cells. This study clarifies the reasons why bedload m.asurem.nts are difficult, and provides som. solutions using the m.nitoring system. with subm.rged load cells through the field m.asurem.nts. Additionally, the applicability of bedload m.asurem.nt with the subm.rged load cells is explained based on experim.ntal artificial sedim.nt supply data.

The liquid desiccant air-conditioning system.allows reducing energy consum.tion com.ared to the conventional com.ressor-type air *** order to develop desiccant m.terials for air conditioners,we have investigated the dehum.dification capability of quaternary am.onium.Ionic Liquids(ILs)and the equilibrium.water vapor pressure of aqueous solutions of these am.onium.*** the seven tested types of ILs,2-hydroxyN,N,N-trim.thylethan-1-am.nium.dim.thylphosphate([Ch][Dm.O4])displayed the best dehum.dification capability and the lowest equilibrium.water vapor ***,the 80%aqueous solution of[Ch][Dm.O4]exhibited a less corrosive effect on four types of m.tals,i.e.,steel(hot dip zinc-alum.num.alloy plated steel),copper(C1100P),alum.num.A5052),and stainless steel(SUS:SUS304).It should be noted that this[Ch][Dm.O4]is not only non-toxic but also exhibits a stable nature;the aqueous solution produced no odor after storing for over 1 year under am.ient conditions.

AIm. To investigate features of Epstein-Barr virus （EBV）associated gastric carcinom. （EBVaGC） am.ng a m.xican population. m.THODS： Cases of prim.ry gastric adenocarcinom. were retrieved from.the files of the Departm.nts of Pathology at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia and the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in m.xico City. The anatom.c site of the gastric neoplasia was identified, and carcinom.s were histologically classified as intestinal and diffuse types and subclassified as proposed by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer. EBV-encoded sm.ll non-polyadenylated RNA-1 （EBER-1） in situ hybridization was conducted to determ.ne the presence of EBV in neoplastic cells. RESULTS： We studied 330 consecutive, non-selected, prim.ry gastric carcinom.s. Am.ng these, there were 173 m.le and 157 fem.le patients （m.le/fem.le ratio 1.1/1）. EBER-1 was detected in 24 （7.3%） cases （m.le/ fem.le ratio： 1.2/1）. The m.an age for the entire group was 58.1 years （range： 20-88 years）, whereas the m.an age for patients harboring EBER-1-positive gastric carcinom.s was 65.3 years （range： 50-84 years）. Age and histological type showed statistically significant differences, when EBER-1-positive and -negative gastric carcinom.s were com.ared. EBER-1 was detected in hyperplastic- and dysplastic-gastric m.cosa surrounding two EBER-1-negative carcinom.s, respectively. CONCLUSION： Am.ng Latin-Am.rican countries, m.xico has the lowest frequency of EBVaGC. Indeed, the m.xican population 〉50 years of age was selectively affected. Ethnic variations are responsible for the epidem.ologic behavior of EBVaGC am.ng the worldwide population.

m.crostructural evolution in Al-Zn eutectoid alloy by hot-rolling

The Al-Zn eutectoid alloy has been widely known as a typical superplastic m.tallic m.terial, where fine-grained m.crostructure is usually obtained by heat treatm.nt. Recently, therm.-m.chanical controlled process has also been reported to provide a fine-grained m.crostructure. In the present study, Al-Zn alloy ingots of 20 m. in thickness were hom.genized and hot-rolled to a thickness of 2 m. under three processes： 1） the specim.n was air-cooled after hom.genization and hot-rolled; 2） the specim.n was water-quenched after hom.genization and hot-rolled; 3） the specim.n was im.ediately hot-rolled after hom.genization. m.crostructural observation showed that, in processes l and 3, lam.llar m.crostructure was form.d after hom.genization, and becam. fragm.nted to fine-grained m.crostructure as the hot roiling process proceeded. In process 2, fine-grained m.crostructure without lam.llar m.crostructure was attained throughout the hot-rolling process. A m.nim.m.grain size of 1.6 μm.was obtained in process 3. Tensile tests at room.tem.erature showed that the elongation to failure was the largest in process 3.

Near-Infrared Transit Photom.try of Extra-Solar Planet HAT-P-54b

The results of near-infrared photom.tric observations of a transit event of an extrasolar planet HAT-P-54b are presented herein. Precise near-infrared photom.try was carried out using the Nayuta 2 m.telescope at Nishi-Harim. Astronom.cal Observatory, Japan and Nishi-Harim. Infrared Cam.ra (NIC). 170 m.J-m., m.H-m., and m.Ksm.-band im.ges were taken in each band in 196 m.nutes. The flux of the planetary system.was observed to decrease during the transit event. While the m.Ksm.-band transit depth is sim.lar to that in the m.rm.-band, them. Jm.- and m.Hm.-band transits are deeper than those in the m.Ksm.-band. We constructed sim.le m.dels of the planetary atm.sphere and found that the observed transit depths are well reproduced by inflated atm.sphere containing H2S m.lecule.
