In recent years, the popularity of medicinal plants as a remedy has been increased manifold due to having minimal adverse effects. The current study aimed to compare the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects of the ethanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (EEAR) Linn. alone and combinedly with conventional antidiabetic agents (gliclazide and pioglitazone) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in male Wister albino rats by the administration of single intra-peritoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate (120 mg/kg b.w.). Effect of oral administration of two different doses of EEAR (200 and 400 mg/kg b.w.), gliclazide (10 mg/kg b.w.) and pioglitazone (10 mg/70kg/b.w.) alone for 2 weeks and a combination of EEAR (200 mg/kg b.w.) with either gliclazide (10 mg/kg b.w.) or pioglitazone (10 mg/70kg/b.w.) for 2 weeks were examined on hypoglycemic activity on 0th, 5th, 10th and 14th day of treatment. After 2 weeks of treatment, hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective effects were estimated by serum biochemical markers such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminases (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate trans-aminases (SGPT) and total protein (TP) with the help of commercially available kits. The survival rate, body weight and organ weight were also measured. Alloxan treatment resulted in persistent hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and liver dysfunction in rats. Treatment with EEAR at different doses improved hyperglycemia significantly (p th and 14th day of treatment in a dose-dependent mood when compared to the disease control rats, gliclazide treated rats and pioglitazone treated rats. Background: Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most common presentations of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Cyclophosphamide is one of the key immunosuppressive agents for the management of LN. Leflunomide is an isoxazole immunomodulatory agent has been shown to be safe, well tolerated and effective in SLE and LN. Objective: To evaluate the outcome of leflunomide in the treatment of proliferative lupus nephritis compared to cyclophosphamide. method: This randomized clinical trial was held in Bangabandhu Sheikh mujib medical University (BSmmU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2017 to August 2019. A total of 66 patients of proliferative lupus nephritis who need induction therapy were enrolled in this study. Leflunomide 100 mg/day for consecutive 3 days followed by 0.5 mg/kg/day in divided dose was given in experimental group (n = 32) and intravenous cyclophosphamide 0.5 gm/m2 of body surface area monthly pulse was given in control group (n = 34). All study patients have received prednisolone and hydroxychloroquine according to KDIGO guideline then followed up monthly for 6 months. Outcomes were measured at 6th month by renal function [S. Creatinine, 24 hours urinary total protein (24-hr UTP)], changes in SELENA-SLEDAI score, anti-ds DNA level, serum complement levels (serum C3 & C4), remission (complete/partial) and adverse drug responses. Result: In experimental group, remission occurred in 18 (56.3%) patients and no remission in 14 (43.7%) patients. In control group, remission occurred in 24 (70.6%) patients and no remission in 10 (29.4%) patients. Adverse effects in experimental group were: elevated ALT (6.3%), hypertension (12.5%), infection (6.3%) and amenorrhea (12.5%). In control group, adverse effects were mainly leucopenia (5.9%), infection (17.7%) and amenorrhea (29.4%). maize is an emerging important crop in Bangladesh because of its high yield potential and economic profitability compared to rice and wheat crops. There is a need to understand the growth and yield behavior of this crop in varying production environments of Bangladesh. Crop model such as Decision Support System For Agro-technology Transfer (DSSAT) version 4.6 (DSSAT hereafter) can be utilized cost effectively to study the performances of maize under different production environments. It needs to calibrate and validate DSSAT model for commonly cultivated maize cultivars in Bangladesh and subsequently take the model to various applications, including inputs and agronomic management options and climate change that impacts analyses. So, the present study was undertaken to firstly calibrate DSSAT model for popular four hybrid maize cultivars (BARI Hybrid maize-7, BARI Hybrid maize-9, Pioneer 30B07 and NK-40). Subsequently, it proceeded with the validation with independent field data sets for evaluating their growth performances. The genetic coefficients for these cultivars were evaluated by using Genotype coefficient calculator (GENCALC) and Generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) module of DSSAT on the basis of first season experiment. The performance of the model was satisfactory and within the significant limits. After calibration, the model was tested for its performance through validation procedure by using second season data. The model performed satisfactorily through phenology, biomass, leaf area index (LAI) and grain yield. Phenology, as estimated through days to flower initiation and maturity, was in good agreement, although simulated results were slightly over predicted compared to observed values but within the statistical significance limit...when compared with observed values at specific growth stages of the crop. 数量充足和配比合理的营养对家畜生产性能起着决定性作用,其中蛋白质是动物生长发育、繁殖性能的主要限制因素之一。蛋白质的种类和水平决定着动物机体组成及日粮中必需氨基酸的供应。对反刍动物来说,蛋白质的作用是双方面,既要满足瘤胃厌氧微生物发酵的需要,又要满足动物成长的营养需要。然而,由于瘤胃的发酵作用,日粮中绝大多数蛋白质在瘤胃内被降解(称为瘤胃降解蛋白,RDP),只有小部分能通过瘤胃在小肠内吸收(称为非瘤胃降解蛋白,RUP),因此用于厌氧合成微生物蛋白的RDP以及RUP的种类决定了反刍动物日粮和机体必需氨基酸的利用率。微生物蛋白和过瘤胃蛋白决定了高产动物日粮中必需氨基酸的供应。因此,饲喂过瘤胃蛋白和氨基酸被认为是满足反刍动物生理以及生产需要的有效方法。文章综述了过瘤胃蛋白、过瘤胃赖氨酸和过瘤胃蛋氨酸在反刍动物上的应用,以及对奶牛、绵羊干物质采食量、消化率、生产性能影响的研究。蛋白质是反刍动物重要的限制性营养,由RDP和RUP组成。瘤胃微生物通过将RDP降解成小肽、氨基酸和氨等来合成微生物蛋白,其数量主要受日粮中瘤胃发酵率的制约。因此,RDP和RUP或氨基酸的供应对于满足反刍动物营养需要非常重要,尤其是对于饲喂低水平日粮的反刍动物。添加瘤胃保护蛋白和瘤胃保护氨基酸(特别是赖氨酸和蛋氨酸)能提高奶牛、绵羊的干物质采食量和消化率。同时,还能够提高生长性能、繁殖效率和产奶量。不管是单独添加,还是与赖氨酸同时添加,如果蛋氨酸的添加量大于肠道的可消化吸收量时,则有可能会产生负面影响。在奶牛泌乳早期的低蛋白水平日粮中添加蛋氨酸,能避免奶牛长期的不良反应。总而言之,反刍动物在低营养水平下添加瘤胃保护蛋白质和氨基酸,能提高饲料采食量、消化率以及生长性能。

Simulating Nitrogen and Irrigation Effects on Wheat Production in Bangladesh under Changing Climate

Climate change impacts are visible in Bangladesh which requires adoption of judicious crop management practices for sustainable agriculture. Crop simulation models are effective in this regard and can be used for optimizing water and nitrogen inputs for maximization of wheat yields. Two field studies were conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) for evaluating the effect of increased temperature on wheat production under variable water and N rates, through the use of DSSAT v4.6 model. Thirty years historic weather data and BARI Gom-26 wheat-cultivar coefficients, as generated through use of GLUE of DSSAT model, were used for evaluating the impact of temperature rise with variable rates of irrigation water and nitrogen. The effects of four levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1) and four irrigation levels [0 (no irrigation), 1, 2 and 3] on wheat yield were evaluated under 0°C, 1°C, 2°C and 3°C rise in temperature. Simulation results indicated that wheat yield increased with increase in nitrogen application rate, but decreased with the temperature rise. Crop growing duration was reduced by about five days for each degree rise in temperature, irrespective of levels of irrigation water and nitrogen-rates. In general, there was yield reduction of 8.13, 16.77 and 24.97 % with increased temperature of 1°C, 2°C and 3°C, respectively, when compared with no temperature rise treatment. For interaction of temperature rise-N dose, the magnitude of yield decline under temperature rise was higher with increased dose of N. Agronomic N use efficiency at different N rates and temperature rise level were calculated. N use efficiency decreases with the increase in temperature rise and the highest (29.95 kg grain kg-1 N) was obtained from 40 kg N ha-1 treated plot with 0°C temperature rise i.e. existing atmospheric temperature. 本实验将未漂碱法蔗渣浆与旧瓦楞纸箱(OCC)浆相混合,研究了其对OCC的增强性能。首先,从当地造纸厂收集蔗渣浆;并评价了蔗渣浆的打浆性能和强度变化。结果表明,采用高达200 kW/h的有效磨浆功率(SEL为0. 5 J/m)可提高纸浆强度性能。这表明轻度打浆有助于纸浆强度的提高,且采用低比边缘负荷时,对蔗渣浆纤维的松散结构不会产生严重影响。选用不同打浆度的蔗渣浆与未打浆的OCC浆混合,改变蔗渣浆的纤维占比且最高不超过20%。结果表明,添加较高用量、经打浆的蔗渣浆能够改善OCC浆除撕裂指数以外的其他所有性能。一般认为OCC浆已丧失结合能力,而加入经打浆的蔗渣浆后,可以提高OCC浆纤维间的结合。
