Typical Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in the General Adult Population in Cotonou: Prevalence and Associated Socio-Demographic Factors

Introduction: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common benign condition with a worldwide prevalence of between 5% and 45% in the adult population. Its prevalence in the general population is little known in Africa. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of typical GERD in the general adult population of a large city and the associated socio-demographic factors. Patients and Methods: This was a prospectively collected, descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study that was conducted over a one-month period (June 2018). We included any person residing in the city of Cotonou for at least 6 months, aged 15 years or older, who had given consent for the study. The two-stage cluster sampling technique was used. The dependent variable was the typical gastroesophageal reflux defined by the heatburn-regurgitation association. Results: We had included 728 subjects. Of these, 255 had a typical GERD, i.e. a prevalence of 35%. The mean age of the respondents was 31.9 ± 13.2 years with extremes of 15 and 88 years. There were 379 men (52.1%) with a sex ratio of 1.08. The study population was represented respectively by artisans (29.3%), students (26.6%) and traders/dealers (20.3%). In terms of marital status, there were as many married and single subjects (48.2%). In addition, 47% of the study population had a body mass index of less than 25 kg/mmily

Viscous Cosmology and Thermodynamics of Apparent Horizon

It is shown that the differential form of Friedmann equations of Friedman-Robertson-Walker （FRW） universe can be recast as a similar form of the first law ThdSh = dE＋ WdV of thermodynamics at the apparent horizon of FRW universe filled with the viscous fluid. It is also shown that by employing the general expression of temperature Th=｜k｜/2π=1/2π~ra（1-2~ra/2H^ra）associated with the apparent horizon of an FRW universe and assumed that the temperature Tm of the energy inside the apparent horizon is proportional to the horizon temperature Tm=bTh, we are able to show that the generalized second law of thermodynamics holds in the Einstein gravity provided Th-Tm/~ra≤（ρ＋~P）.

How Properties that Distinguish Solids from Fluids and Constraints of Spherical Geometry Suppress Lower mantle Convection

The large magnitude of the dimensionless rayleigh number （ra-10^8） for Earth＇s -3 000 km thick mantle is considered evidence of whole mantle convection. However, the current formulation assumes behavior characteristic of gases and liquids and also assumes Cartesian geometry. Issues arising from neglecting physical properties unique to solids and ignoring the spherical shapes for planets include：（1） Planet radius must be incorporated into ra, in addition to layer thickness, to conserve mass during radial displacements. （2） The vastly different rates for heat and mass diffusion in solids, which result from their decoupled transport mechanisms, promote stability. （3） Unlike liquids, sub- stantial stress is needed to deform solids, which independently promotes stability. （4） High interior compression stabilizes the mantle in additional minor ways. Therefore, representing conditions for convection in solid, self-gravitating spheroids, requires modifying formulae developed for bottom- heated fluids near ambient conditions under an invariant gravitational field. To derive stability criteria appropriate to solid spheres, we use dimensional analysis, and consider the effects of geometry, force competition, and microscopic behavior. We show that internal heating has been improperly ac- counted for in the ra. We conclude that the lower mantle is stable for two independent reasons： heat diffusion far outpaces mass diffusion （creep） and yield strength of solids at high pressure exceeds the effective deviatoric stress. We discuss the role of partial melt in lubricating plate motion, and explain why the ra is not applicable to the multi-component upper mantle. When conduction is insufficient to transport heat in the Earth, melt production and ascent are expected, not convection of solid rock.

Assessment of Dietary Habits and Nutritional Status of Women of Childbearing Age in Cameroon: A Cross Sectional Study

Background: malnutrition due to poor feeding habits, is still a serious public health issue in Cameroon. The objective of this study was to assess the dietary patterns and nutritional status of women of childbearing age in various geographical settings in Cameroon so as to propose intervention strategies. methods: In a cross sectional study conducted from January 2014 to August 2015, women aged 14 - 49 years were randomly selected from the capital city Yaounde and four regions of Cameroon. Anthropometric measures were collected for nutritional status assessment. Data on diet habits and socio-demographic parameters were collected. Results: 608 women of reproductive age with average age 34.68 ± 0.39 years made up the study. Dietary patterns assessment revealed that, most study participants had a frequent intake of carbohydrate rich foods and fats and oils rich foods;but an infrequent intake of protein rich foods and vitamin and minerals rich foods in a week. Nutritional status assessment revealed that, 2.1% were underweight, 28.6% had a normal weight, 30.8% overweight, and 38.5% obese. The grass field regions presented the highest prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity. Higher malnutrition levels were linked to low intakes of pulses and beans;milk and dairy products;vegetables and fruits food groups. Conclusion: Women of the study population had an unhealthy dietary pattern and a poor nutritional status. Therefore, strategies such as nutritional education are warranted and should be age and region specific, so as to target specific groups of women and ensure adequate nutritional status and health.

Calculating the Phase Transformation kinetics Using Impedance Spectroscopy for Sb2Te3

This paper describes a simple form, the theory to determine the crystallization fraction during the phase transformation of a solid, at a constant heating rate, from data obtained by impedance spectroscopy, where the change of the applied alternating voltage and measured current are proportional to the microstructural changes at the sample, corresponding to the volume fraction of a series layer model of two phases. To determine the volume fraction of each phase present in the sample, electrical data are obtained: conductivity and permittivity at DC, which are modeled by an electrical circuit composed by 2-RC, taking into that the permittivity and the occupied volume correspond to the filling fraction of each phase. By Cathodic Ersion or Sputtering, samples were obtained in film form of about 500 in thickness, composed of an alloy of Sb2Te3, in amorphous phase. To ensure the existence of the phase transformation in the sample, phase transition tests are performed by changes in: Reflection Optics, Electrical Resistivity and X-ray Diffraction, showing clearly the presence of such a transformation. In the final part of this work, it completely shows the experimental results, giving a clear and precise idea of the kinetics of phase transformation of Sb2Te3 alloy, by impedance spectroscopy technique, which proves to be a simple and practical calculation tool.

Small Non-Conventional Irrigation Dams with Open and Elongated Fields

The objective is to describe the hydraulic infrastructure and social organization in a small system of non-conventional irrigation locally known as presas. The technique consists in controlling runoff and retaining the soil, which has dragged with it. For that the local inhabitants must increase the height of a series of walls built with stones arranged in beds of dry streams. The information was obtained with field tours, interpretation of topographic charts and interviews with users of the presas. We conclude that the permanence of the system depends on the knowledge to control runoff, the availability of plant varieties adapted to the local ecology, the widespread use of oxen for agricultural work, as well as the social arrangements that allow the maintenance of the hydraulic infrastructure.

With mercury modified copper solid amalgam electrode （inner diameter 1.5 mm）, the voltammetric behavior of thiram was studied. Differential pulse voltammetry （DPV） and direct current voltammetry （DCV） were utilized for this purpose. The reaction mechanism was investigated using DCV and elimination voltammetry with linear scan （EVLS）. The optimum conditions for DPV determination of thiram were found in Britton-Robinson （BR） buffer of pH = 5, initial potential Ein = +100 mV and accumulation potential Eacc = -200 mV vs. Ag/AgCl/3m kCl, scan rate 20 mV.s-1 . Applying prolonged accumulation time （100 s）, the limit of detection 3×10-9 mol.L-1 was reached.
