Evaluation of quantitative contrast harmonic imaging to assess malignancy of liver tumors:A prospective controlled two-center study

AIm: To establish the extent to which contrast enhancement with SonoVue in combination with quantitative evaluation of contrast-medium dynamics facilitates the detection of hepatic tumors. mETHODS: One hundred patients with histologically confirmed malignant or benign hepatic tumor (maximum size 5 cm) were analyzed. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (bolus injection 2.5 mL SonoVue) was carried out with intermittent breath-holding technique using a multifrequency transducer (2.5-4 mHz). Native vascularization was analyzed with power Doppler. The contrast-enhanced dynamic ultrasound investigation was carried out with contrast harmonic imaging in true detection mode during the arterial,portal venous and late phases. mechanical index was set at 0.15. Perfusion analysis was performed by post-processing of the raw data time intensity curve (TIC) analysis. The cut-off of the gray value differences between tumor and normal liver tissue was established using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis 64-line multi-slice computed tomography served as reference method in all cases. magnetic resonance tomography was used additionally in 19 cases. RESULTS: One hundred patients with 59 malignant (43 colon,5 breast,2 endocrine metastases,7 hepatocellular carcinomas and 2 kidney cancers) and 41 benign (15 hemangiomas,7 focal nodular hyperplasias,5 complicated cysts,2 abscesses and 12 circumscribed fatty changes) tumors were included. The late venous phase proved to be the most sensitive for classification of the tumor type. Fifty-eight of the 59 malignant tumors were classified as true positive,and one as false negative. This resulted in a sensitivity of 98.3%. Of the 41 benign tumors,37 were classified as true negative and 4 as false negative,which corresponds to a specificity of 90.2%. Anti-mmP-2 and mmP-9 activity of Salsola komarovii Iljin extract and its solvent fractions

Objective: To investigate matrix metalloproteinases(mmP)-2 and mmP-9 inhibitory effect of Salsola komarovii Iljin, an edible halophyte with health beneficial ***: Salsola komarovii crude extracts(SKI), and solvent(n-hexane, 85% aq. meOH, n-BuOH, and H2O) fractionated extracts of SKI were prepared. Gelatin zymography was carried out to observe mmP enzymatic activity. The release of the mmP enzymes was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression of mmPs in m RNA and protein level were investigated by polymerase chain reaction analysis and immunoblotting, ***: SKI and SKI fractions inhibited active mmP-2 and mmP-9 amount in the treated cell culture medium. Also, SKI suppressed the release of mmP-2 and mmP-9 from stimulated HT1080 human fibrosarcoma cells. Furthermore, SKI suppressed the m RNA and protein expression of mmP-2 and mmP-9. SKI fractions showed parallel effects except for H2O fraction which did not yield any significant mmP inhibitory effect. Among fractions, 85% aq. me OH was the most active fraction to inhibit both the enzymatic effect and expression of mmP-2 and ***: SKI may contain potential mmP release inhibitory compounds. Salsola komarovii is a promising source of compounds against mmP and could be utilized in the development of antitumor agents.

Direct synthesis of highly conductive poly（3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene）：poly（4-styrenesulfonate）（PEDOT：PSS）/graphene composites and their applications in energy harvesting systems

We report for the first time highly conductive poly（3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene）： poly（4-styrenesulfonate）（PEDOT：PSS）/graphene composites fabricated by in situ polymerization and their applications in a thermoelectric device and a platinum （Pt）-free dye-sensitized solar cell （DSSC） as energy harvesting systems. Graphene was dispersed in a solution of poly（4-styrenesulfonate）（PSS） and polymerization was directly carried out by addition of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene （EDOT） monomer to the dispersion. The content of the graphene was varied and optimized to give the highest electrical conductivity. The composite solution was ready to use without any reduction process because reduced graphene oxide was used. The fabricated film had a conductivity of 637 ***-1, corresponding to an enhancement of 41%, after the introduction of 3 wt.% graphene without any further complicated reduction processes of graphene being required. The highly conductive composite films were employed in an organic thermoelectric device, and the device showed a power factor of 45.7 μW·m^-1K^-2 which is 93% higher than a device based on pristine PEDOT：PSS. In addition, the highly conductive composite films were used in Pt-free DSSCs, showing an energy conversion efficiency of 5.4%, which is 21% higher than that of a DSSC based on PEDOT：PSS.

Discovering High-Quality Threaded Discussions in Online Forums

Archives of threaded discussions generated by users in online forums and discussion boards contain valuable knowledge on various topics. However, not all threads are useful because of deliberate abuses, such as trolling and flaming, that are commonly observed in online conversations. The existence of various users with different levels of expertise also makes it difficult to assume that every discussion thread stored online contains high-quality contents. Although finding high-quality threads automatically can help both users and search engines sift through a huge amount of thread archives and make use of these potentially useful resources effectively, no previous work to our knowledge has performed a study on such task. In this paper, we propose an automatic method for distinguishing high-quality threads from low-quality ones in online discussion sites. We first suggest four different artificial measures for inducing overall quality of a thread based on ratings of its posts. We then propose two tasks involving prediction of thread quality without using post rating information. We adopt a popular machine learning framework to solve the two prediction tasks. Experimental results on a real world forum archive demonstrate that our method can significantly improve the prediction performance across all four measures of thread quality on both tasks. We also compare how different types of features derived from various aspects of threads contribute to the overall performance and investigate key features that play a crucial role in discovering high-quality threads in online discussion sites.

Dose-response effects of in-feed antibiotics on growth performance and nutrient utilization in weaned pigs fed diets supplemented with yeast-based nucleotides

Dietary nucleotides are bioactive compounds with the potential to mitigate weaning-associated challenges in piglets. An experiment was conducted to determine the interaction effect of antimicrobial growth promoters(AGP) and a nucleotide-rich yeast extract(NRYE) on growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility(ATTD) of dry matter(Dm), crude protein(CP) and gross energy(GE),and to establish whether NRYE supplementation may completely or partially replace AGP in diets for weaned pigs. In phase 1 and 2, corn, wheat, canola meal and soybean meal based diets, which were formulated to contain 0.0 or 0.1% NRYE with 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the recommended AGP dosage, were fed to 108 twenty-one day old piglets(initial body weight 7.11 ± 0.9 kg; mean ±SD) from d 1 to 14 and15 to 28, respectively. Overall, increasing AGP level in NRYE supplemented diets linearly decreased average daily gain(ADG)(P = 0.002) and gain-to-feed ratio(G:F)(P = 0.007); and quadratically decreased ATTD of Dm(P = 0.001), CP(P =0.003) and G:F(P = 0.017) during phase 2. Compared with control and pigs fed NRYE with 100% of recommended AGP dosage, pigs fed 0.1% NRYE without AGP had greater(P menting 0.1% NRYE improved growth performance of pigs but this beneficial effect was reduced by increasing dietary AGP dosage.

Caulerpa okamurae extract attenuates inflammatory interaction,regulates glucose metabolism and increases insulin sensitivity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and RAW 264.7 macrophages

Objective: To examine whether Caulerpa okamurae ethanolic extract(COE) could inhibit obesitymediated inflammation, improve glucose metabolism and increase insulin sensitivity, using in vitro cell models of RAW 264.7 macrophages and 3 T3-L1 ***: We cocultured 3 T3-L1 adipocytes in direct contact with lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages and induced insulin resistance in 3 T3-L1 adipocytes with tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-a) in the presence or absence of 250 mg/m L of COE. We investigated various markers of inflammation, glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity in these models using Griess reagent to measure nitric oxide(NO) production, 2-[N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl) amino]-2-deoxyglucose to measure glucose uptake, Western blot analysis to quantify protein expression and reverse transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction to evaluate m RNA ***: We found that COE(250 mg/m L) significantly inhibited the lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 macrophages by downregulating NO production, nitric oxide synthase 2 expression and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-j B. COE also showed similar anti-inflammatory activity in coculture, along with decreased TNF-a, interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein m RNA expression. In addition, COE also improved glucose uptake in coculture by upregulating glucose transporter-4(GLUT-4) and adiponectin and reducing serine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1(IRS1). In the TNF-a-induced insulin resistance model of 3 T3-L1 adipocytes, COE significantly improved both basal and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, accompanied by phosphorylation of IRS1 at tyrosine 632, phospho-50 adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase a and glycogen synthase kinase-3 b(Ser9) as well as upregulation of ***: Together, these findings suggest that COE has potential to treat or prevent obesity-induced metabolic disorders.

Densification simulation of compacted Al powders using multi-particle finite element method

The powder compaction simulations were performed to demonstrate deformation behavior of particles and estimate the effect of different punch speeds and particle diameters on the relative density of powder by a multi-particle finite element model(mPFEm). Individual particle discretized with a finite element mesh allows for a full description of the contact mechanics. In order to verify the reliability of compaction simulation by mPFEm, the compaction tests of porous aluminum with average particle size of 20 μm and 3 μm were performed at different ram speeds of 5, 15, 30 and 60 mm/min by mTS servo-hydraulic tester. The results show that the slow ram speed is of great advantage for powder densification in low compaction force due to sufficient particle rearrangement and compaction force increases with decrease in average particle size of aluminum.

Environmental friendly synthesis of hierarchical mesoporous platinum nanoparticles templated by fucoidan biopolymer for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Researching novel hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)catalysts with enhanced electrocatalytic activity,excellent stability,and cost-efficiency is of great significance for the large-scale hydrogen production from industrial electrolysis *** report the preparation of hierarchical mesoporous-Pt nanoparticles(Hm-Pt NPs)with coral-like rough surface morphologies using environmental friendly and biocompatible fucoidan(Fu)biopolymer as a surface engineering compound and its application to electrocatalysts for *** designed Hm-Pt NPs yields better mass activity of electrocatalysts compared to a commercial Pt/***-Pt NPs showed an overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the HER in 0.5 mH2SO4,which was highly comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C catalysts(29 mV).However,the amount of Hm-Pt NPs loaded in glassy carbon electrode(0.033 mg mL-1)was approximately 20 times lower than that of the commercial Pt/C(0.64 mg *** Hm-Pt NPs also maintained high catalytic stability with a consistent HER current density after 1000 continuous *** excellent HER performance is attributed to the improved electrochemical surface area,highly porous structure,and good surface wettability of the Hm-Pt NPs,which results in enhanced electrocatalytic activity,decreased resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface,and facile penetration of the electrolytes inside the electrode.
