Spinal cord injury remains a major cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decompression and rehabilitation,there are no pharmacological treatments to limit the progression of injury and optimize recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the complement system in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflammation,a similar role for complement in spinal neuroinflammation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of complement in spinal cord injury including the sources of complement proteins,triggers of complement activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data demonstrating the different triggers of complement activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to damage-associated molecular *** effector functions of complement have been implicated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of complement anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while emphasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we systematically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical models of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into human *** review emphasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different complement pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvement of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of complement in white matter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplement genetic models.

The role of surfactant protein A(SP-A)in the recognition and clearance of apoptotic cells is well established,but to date,it is still not clear which surface molecules of apoptotic cells are involved in the *** we present evidence that phosphatidylserine(PS)is a relevant binding molecule for human *** binding is Ca^(2+)-dependent and is not inhibited by mannose,suggesting that the sugar-binding site of the carbohydrate recognition domain(CRD)of SP-A is not *** cytometry studies on apoptotic Jurkat cells revealed apparent inhibition of annexin V binding by increasing concentrations of SP-A in late apoptotic but not early apoptotic cells,and this was consistent for Jurkat cells and *** these data,confocal microscopy results show a co-localisation of annexin V and SP-A in late apoptotic but not early apoptotic ***,we cannot conclude that this inhibition is exclusively due to the binding of SP-A to PS on the cell surface,as annexin V is not wholly specific for PS and SP-A also interacts with other phospholipids that might become exposed on the apoptotic cell surface.

Epidemiology of ovarian cancer:a review

Ovarian cancer(OC) is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the world and the tenth most common in China. Epithelial OC is the most predominant pathologic subtype, with five major histotypes that differ in origination,pathogenesis, molecular alterations, risk factors, and prognosis. Genetic susceptibility is manifested by rare inherited mutations with high to moderate penetrance. Genome-wide association studies have additionally identified 29 common susceptibility alleles for OC, including 14 subtype-specific alleles. Several reproductive and hormonal factors may lower risk, including parity, oral contraceptive use, and lactation, while others such as older age at menopause and hormone replacement therapy confer increased risks. These associations differ by histotype, especially for mucinous OC, likely reflecting differences in etiology. Endometrioid and clear cell OC share a similar, unique pattern of associations with increased risks among women with endometriosis and decreased risks associated with tubal ligation. OC risks associated with other gynecological conditions and procedures, such as hysterectomy,pelvic inflammatory disease, and polycystic ovarian syndrome, are less clear. Other possible risk factors include environmental and lifestyle factors such as asbestos and talc powder exposures, and cigarette smoking. The epidemiology provides clues on etiology,primary prevention, early detection, and possibly even therapeutic strategies.

An approximate method for describing the plastic hardening-softening behaviour of circular pipes subjected to pure bending is presented. Theoretical estimation based on the uniform ovalization model and local collapse model proposed in the paper is incorporated to give several simple formulations with reasonable accuracy for determining the relationship between bending moment (m) and curvature (kappa) in the purely bended pipes. Attention is focused on the critical curvature associated with maximum resistant moment and the maximum change in the original diameter before the end of uniform ovalization stage as well as the local collapse behaviour. Some comparisons between analytical results and experimental results are made in order to examine the theory.

Objective To investigate the analgesia induced by receptin （REC）, a chemically modified cobratoxin （CTX, a long-chain postsynaptic α-neurotoxin from Thailand cobra venom）, and the effects of atropine and naloxone on antinociceptive activity of REC in rodent pain models. methods REC was administered intraperitoneally （5 mg/kg, 7.07 mg/kg, or 10 mg/kg, i.p.） or intra-cerebral venticularly （62.5 μg/kg, i.c.v.）. The antinociceptive action was determined using the hotlate test, the acetic acid writhing test and tail flick assay in mice and rats. The involvement of cholinergic and the opioid peptidergic systems in REC-induced analgesia were examined by pretreatment of animals with atropine （Atr; 0.5 mg/kg, i.m. or 10 mg/kg, i.p.） or naloxone （Nal; 3 mg/kg, i.p.）. The effect of REC on motor activity was tested using the Animex test in mice. Results REC （5 mg/kg, 7.07 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg, i.p.） exhibited a dose-dependent analgesic action in mice as determined with hot-plate test and acetic acid writhing test. The significant analgesia of REC was seen 2 h to 3 h after its administration. In the rat-tail flick assay, the administration of REC at 62.5 μg/kg （1/160 of systemic dose; i.c.v.）produced marked analgesic effects. Atropine at 0.5 mg/kg （i.m.）, 10 mg/kg （i.p.） or naloxone at 3 mg/kg （i.p.） failed to block the analgesic effects of REC. REC at the highest effective dose of 10 mg/kg did not change the spontaneous mobility of mice. Conclusion These results demonstrate that REC has analgesic effect. This activity appears to be mediated through the peripheral nervous system though central nervous system may contribute to REC＇s analgesic effects. The central cholinergic system and opioid peptidergic system appear not to be involved in the antinociceptive action of REC.

The formation of polymer and hydrogel from aqueous solutions having 20, 30 and 40% concentrations ofacrylamide monomer by γ-ray irradiation processing in the dose range 0.06-30 kGy using a Co-60 source and theircharacterization have been observed. Polymer conversion and gel fraction are found to depend on radiation doses. Polymerconversion increases with the increase of dose, depending on the solution concentration, where maximum conversion isachieved at 0.18, 0.16 and 0.10 kGy for 20%, 30% and 40% concentrations, respectively. On the other hand, gel fractionincreases with dose from the gel point (0.12 kGy) for all concentrations, where 100% conversion of gel occurs at doses≥5 kGy. Tensile strength, viscosity and molecular weight (m_w) of polymer samples increase with both the dose and theconcentration, showing a high value of m_w up to≈10~8. Swelling of hydrogels under water with respect to time varies due tothe variation of cross-linking density formed in the gels and the maximum swelling mainly occurs within 24 h. A remarkable change of surface morphology reveals characteristic features of monomer, polymer and hydrogel films.

Surfactant proteins A(SP-A)and D(SP-D),both members of the collectin family,play a well established role in apoptotic cell recognition and *** in vitro data show that SP-A and SP-D interact with apoptotic neutrophils in a distinct ***-A and SP-D bind in a Ca^(2+)-dependent manner to viable and early apoptotic neutrophils whereas the much greater interaction with late apoptotic neutrophils is Ca^(2+)-*** surface molecules on the apoptotic target cells responsible for these interactions had not been identified and this study was done to find candidate target ***(mPO),a specific intracellular defense molecule of neutrophils that becomes exposed on the outside of the cell upon apoptosis,was identified by affinity purification,mass-spectrometry and western blotting as a novel binding molecule for SP-A and *** confirm its role in recognition,it was shown that purified immobilised mPO binds SP-A and SP-D,and that mPO is surface-exposed on late apoptotic ***-A and SP-D inhibit binding of an anti-mPO monoclonal Ab to late apoptotic *** microscopy confirmed that anti-mPO mAb and SP-A/SP-D colocalise on late apoptotic *** was identified as a further potential ligand for SP-A,and neutrophil defensin as a target for both proteins.

Swelling property of acrylamide hydrogels,prepared from aqueous solutions of acrylamide monomer havingconcentrations in the range of 10-60 wt% by ray irradiation method using a Co-60 gamma radiation source at dosesranging 1-30.0 kGy,has been investigated under various swelling *** swelling media were basically solvents(solutions),produced by dissolving methanol,ethanol,glucose,sucrose,sodium chloride and sodium persulfate individuallywith distilled water,and solutions prepared with pHs=3,7 and *** investigation was performed in order to observe theeffect of these solvents and pHs as well as the influence of monomer concentrations,radiation doses and times on swellingbehavior of *** values were found higher for hydrogels prepared with lower monomer concentrations(ca.20 wt%)and radiation doses(ca.5 kGy)and showed a leveling off tendency within 24 *** glucose solvent and the buffersolution of pH=10 revealed significant increase of swelling of hydrogels as compared to other *** areexplained based on crosslinking density in hydrogel,polymer-solvent/polymer-polymer interactions in solutions,permeability of molecules in solutions and ionization capacity of hydrogel in pH.
