Characteristics of Nutrient Salt Uptake Associated with Water Use of Corn as a Catch Crop at Different Plant Densities in a Greenhouse

Dent corn, as a catch crop used for salt removal, was cultivated at different densities, i.e., 7.3 （low density）, 59.7 （normal density）, and 119.5 plants m-2 （high density）, during a 50 d fallow period after cultivation of a commercial crop in a greenhouse, to analyze the characteristics of nutrient salt （N, K, mg, and Ca） uptake by roots and to study the effect of plant density on the characteristics associated with crop water use. Leaf area index for the high and normal density treatments reached extremely high values of 24.3 and 14.9, respectively. These values induced higher transpiration rates that were estimated using the Penman-monteith model with the incorporation of specific parameters for crop and greenhouse conditions. The total N, K, mg, and Ca contents in the crop canopy at harvest were 26.8, 13.0, 1.0, and 1.7 g m-S, respectively, under the high density treatment. The dynamics of salt uptake rates for high, normal, and low density treatments were evaluated by assessing weekly changes in salt content, and were subsequently compared against the transpiration rate. A positive linear relationship was obtained between these 2 parameters for all 3 density treatments and all tested salts. Hence, higher transpiration rates caused higher salt uptake rates through water absorption. On the other hand, salt uptake efficiency per unit water use by cultivation was lower in the low density treatment. Therefore, management procedures with dense planting that induce higher transpiration rates and lower evaporation rate are extremely important for the effective cultivation of corn catch crops.

Prays oleae Bern, （Om） andPalpita unionalis Hfib., （Jm） are two of the most important pests in olive groves in Egypt. A 3-year monitoring study using sex pheromone traps in semi-arid and arid olive groves was performed. In the semi-arid grove, flight pattern of the Om was the same as in other mediterranean countries, but in dates concordating plant phenology. The moth completes three generations annually： the first flight is in march to April, the second is in may to June and the third occurs in August to October. In the arid olive grove, an interesting flight pattern was observed. First flight was always very close or overlapped with the second one with no male catches during August to October. However, eggs were present most of the season, indicating unusually high female presence and oviposition activity of the Om during the absence of males in the traps. Generally, moth densities were significantly lower in low fruiting years than in higher ones and were also lower in the arid olive grove than in the semi-arid one. In contrast, Jm males were present all season, exhibiting six to seven and three to four overlapping flight peaks in arid and semi-arid olive groves, respectively. moth densities were significantly higher in the arid olive grove than those in the semi-arid one. This study shows that trapping location and fruit beating year are characteristics that strongly affect the grove-specific information needed to estimate correctly adult emergence and thus the timing of control measures.

Desiccation tolerance （DT）, the ability to survive loss of more than 90% of cellular water （≤0.1 g H2O g^-1 dry mass） for prolonged periods, is common in seeds （90% of angiosperm species） but rare in vegetative tissues （0.04% of land plants; reviewed in Gaff and Oliver, 2013）. Vegetative DT is more widespread in non-tracheophytes, being present in 25 species of algae, 158 bryophytes species, and all lichens, but is rare in tracheophytes, being displayed in 64 pteridophyte and 135 angiosperm species （Gaff and Oliver, 2013）.

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the definition of a European perspective on Digital Earth(DE),identify some actions that can contribute to raise the awareness of DE in the European context and thus strengthen the European contribution to the International Society for Digital Earth(ISDE).The paper identifies opportunities and synergies with the current policy priorities in Europe(Europe 2020,Innovation Union and Digital Agenda)and highlights a number of key areas to advance the development of DE from a European perspective:(1)integrating scientific research into DE;(2)exploiting the Observation Web with human-centred sensing;and(3)governance,including the establishment of stronger linkages across the European landscape of funding streams and *** paper is offered also as a contribution to the development of this new vision of DE to be presented at the next International DE Conference in Perth,Australia,in August *** global recognition of this new vision will then reinforce the European component and build a positive feedback loop for the further implementation of DE across the globe.

Objective:To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and soil-transmitted helminths(STHs) among primary schoolchildren in El dhayga,Central ***:In this cross-sectional study,three fresh faecal samples were collected from each child,which were examined by direct wet mount,brine flotation,formalin-ether and Kato-Katz *** intensity of each STH infection was expressed as the mean of eggs per gram counts of the three ***:In total,142(90.4%) of 157 children harboured at least one type of intestinal *** lumbricoides,Hymenolepis nana,Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were the most common parasites found,with prevalence rates of 32.5%,30.6%,33.1%and 19.7%,*** of these 157 children,29(18.5%) harboured more than two intestinal parasitic *** cases of Schistosoma mansoni or Enterobius vermicularis were identified. Conclusions:The study demonstrates significant burden of intestinal protozoa and STH infections in this part of Sudan and highlights the need for preventive and intervention measures.

The face-centered cubic structure(fcc)and its deformation behaviors,as well as the distinctive role of fcc-Ti in nanocrystallization in TC17 subjected to high energy shot peening(HESP),were investigated by using comprehensive high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEm).The results showed that there was a stress-induced fcc-Ti in TC17 with a lattice constant of 0.420–0.433 nm and the B-type orientation relationship between the hcp-Ti and the fcc-Ti as[2-1-10]_(hcp)//[-110]_(fcc)and(0001)_(hcp)//(111)_(fcc),which was accomplished by the gliding of Shockley partial dislocations with Burgers vector of 1/3[01-10]on the basal *** deformation twinning dominated the subsequent deformation of fcc-Ti,producing two types of{111}twins with different *** them,the I-type twin with complete structure was generated by successive gliding of Shockley partial dislocations with the same Burgers vector of 1/6[11-2].In contrast,the cooperative slip of three Shockley partials,whose sum of Burgers vectors was equal to zero,produced the II-type twin with zero net macroscopic *** then,the emission of Shockley partial with the Burgers vector of 1/6[11-2]on every three(111)fccplanes resulted in the formation of a 9R *** to the dissociation effect of lamellar fcc-Ti and the superior deformation ability of fcc structure,the occurrence of fcc-Ti effectively promoted surface nanocrystallization of TC17.

This study reports the morphological characteristics of anomalous variations in Global Navigation Satellite System Total Electron Content(GNSS-TEC) prior to the strong local earthquakes(EQ) that occurred during the period of *** have analyzed 20 earthquakes of magnitude m> 5.6.A statistical technique is implemented on the data of six GNSS stations located in Tashkent,Kitab,and maidanak in Uzbekistan,and Islamabad,multan,Quetta in *** results show continuous anomalous variations in TEC during 24 h befo re the occupancy of local *** is shown that the precursors before the occurrence of strong earthquakes,in particular of magnitude 5.7,7.7,7.5,7.8 and 7.3 are detected near Eastern Uzbekistan(26 may 2013),Southwestern Pakistan(24 September 2013),Hindukush region of Afghanistan(26 October 2015),and Central Nepal(25 April 2015) and(12 may 2015),*** ionospheric anomalies appearing before the strong earthquakes at six GNSS stations are registered in 14cases(70%) out of 20 selected *** is depicted that anomalies referred to as ionospheric precursors appeared about 1-7 days prior to the occurrence of strong earthquakes.
