Hematologic.l malignanc.es in Sic.le c.ll Disease Patients: Report of Four c.ses in Togo and Literature Review

Bac.ground: Hemopathies were rarely observed in major sic.le c.ll disease patients some thirty years ago, probably due to the high mortality rate among the latter as a result of progressive c.mplic.tions. Thanks to advanc.s in the management of sic.le c.ll disease, patients' life expec.anc. has inc.eased c.nsiderably, exposing them more frequently to neoplasia, inc.uding hematologic.l malignanc.es. The inc.eased risk of leukemogenesis is multifac.orial and linked to the pathophysiologic.l mec.anisms of the c.inic.l manifestations of sic.le c.ll disease. Study Setting: The c.inic.l haematology department of c.mpus teac.ing hospital and the paediatric.onc.-haematology unit of Sylvanus Olympio teac.ing hospital in Lomé were used as study settings. Observations: Four hematologic.malignanc.es were c.llec.ed in a c.hort of 5847 major sic.le c.ll syndromes. The median age of the patients was 31.25 years (extremes: 14 and 58 years) and they were predominantly female (sex ratio m/F = 0.25). Two were on bac.ground therapy with hydroxyurea. Among the four patients, there were two c.ses of ac.te lymphoc.tic.leukemia, inc.uding ALL3 in a 58-year-old SS woman and T-ALL2 in a 12-year-old Sc. Then, a c.se of lymphoc.tic.lymphoma in a 20-year-old SS man was reported and finally a c.se of c.ronic.myeloc.tic.leukemia in a 33-year-old woman of Sβ+ thalassaemia phenotype. c.nc.usion: To further report this c.existenc., it is therefore essential to systematic.lly c.nsider hematologic.l malignanc.es during major sic.le c.ll syndromes even if there are similarities in the symptomatology of these two serious pathologic.l situations.

The Effec.s of Zinc.Sulfate on the in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in c.rvids

The c.ptive white-tailed deer industry has an estimated impac. of 1.6 billion USD in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirements for c.rvids are determined through researc. based on sheep and goats. The objec.ive of this study was to determine the effec.s of zinc.on differenc.s in dry matter digestibility in vitro for white-tailed does (Odoc.ileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were ethic.lly harvested, rumens were c.llec.ed, and plac.d into a c.oler c.ntaining warm water. Rumen c.ntents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using c.eese c.oth while applying c.2. Fluid was plac.d into four separate inc.bator jars with filter bags c.ntaining a 1:1 alfalfa to c.astal hay blend. Zinc.doses of 0.073 mg/kg/d equivalents were added to two of the jars ( Zn), and the additional two jars rec.ived 0.00 mg/kg/d (c.N). Following 48 h of inc.bation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) showed no signific.nt differenc.s between the c.ntrol and the treatment groups. Average dry matter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respec.ively. There were no differenc.s detec.ed in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or Om between the treatment groups. While no detec.able differenc.s were observed in this study, this methodology did prove to be viable and func.ional for mic.obial digestion in vitro. This study c.n be replic.ted with multiple experimental units to c.nfirm the observations of inc.eased digestibility. Formal nutritional guidelines c.n be c.eated to allow for more effic.ent feeding of c.rvids thereby reduc.ng feed c.sts and c.ntinuing the growth of the c.ptive deer industry.

c.arac.erisation of the Bac.eria and Arc.aea c.mmunity Assoc.ated with Wild Oysters, At Three Possible Restoration Sites in the North Sea

With 85% of the global oyster reefs destroyed, there is an urgent need for large sc.le restoration to benefit from the ec.system servic.s provided by biogenic.oyster reefs and their assoc.ated biodiversity, inc.uding mic.oorganisms that drive marine biogeoc.emic.l c.c.es. This experiment established a baseline for the monitoring of the bac.erial and arc.aeal c.mmunity assoc.ated with wild oysters, using samples from their immediate environment of the Voordelta, with c.habiting c.assostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis, Duikplaats with only c. gigas attac.ed to roc.s, and the Dansk Skaldyrc.ntre, with no onsite oysters. The mic.obial profiling was c.rried out through DNA analysis of samples c.llec.ed from the surfac.s of oyster shells and their substrate, the sediment and seawater. Following 16S rRNA amplic.n sequenc.ng and bioinformatic., alpha indic.s implied high spec.es abundanc. and diversity in sediment but low abundanc. in seawater. As expec.ed, Proteobac.eria, Bac.eroidetes, Firmic.tes and Thaumarc.aeota dominated the top 20 OTUs. In the Voordelta, OTUs related to c.lwellia, Shewanella and Psyc.robium differentiated the oysters c.llec.ed from a reef with those attac.ed to roc.s. Duikplaats were distinc. for sulfur-oxidizers Sulfurimonas and sulfate-reduc.rs from the Sva 0081 sediment group. Arc.aea were found mainly in sediments and the oyster assoc.ated mic.obiome, with greater abundanc. at the reef site, c.nsisting mostly of Thaumarc.aeota from the family Nitrosopumilac.ae. The oyster free site displayed arc.aea in sediments only, and algal bloom indic.tor mic.oorganisms from the Rhodobac.erac.ae, Flavobac.eriac.ae family and genus [Polaribac.er] huanghezhanensis, in addition to the asc.dian symbiotic.partner, Synec.oc.c.us. This study suggests site spec.fic.mic.obiome shifts, influenc.d by the presenc. of oysters and the type of substrate.
