Objective: This study aims at assessing maternal and child care provided from prenatal to birth, so that it can reveal the weaknesses and potentialities of prenatal program in order to guide the development of strategic plans. methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted in the city of Santa Cruz, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, from November 2012 to February 2013. The sample consisted of 200 women, chosen by draw, mothers of children under two years old who had attended the Primary Health Care System. The study used a semi-structured questionnaire used by the ministry of Health. Our research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, under the approval No. 311.613. Results: It was found that most mothers were rated from good to very good in the quality of care during prenatal and birth. As to the performance of prenatal and birth care services, most women performed those services under the municipality’s Public Health System, and the prenatal care primarily under Basic Health Care Units. Conclusion: In this assessment study, indicators regarding maternal and child care provided during the prenatal period were found to be positive, which contributes to the reduction of maternal and child mortality. The study also shows that Primary Health Care is essential to ensuring an effective, humane and comprehensive health care.

Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil from Hyptis carpinifolia Benth

Essential oils are secondary metabolites whose biological properties have been studied with emphasis on antimicrobial activity. Hyptis carpinifolia Benth (Rosmaninho) is used in folk medicine in the fight against colds and rheumatism. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from H. carpinifolia. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger apparatus. The biological activity was determined using the Agar Cavity Diffusion technique to evaluate the effect of concentrations of 500, 250, 125, 62.5, 31.25, 15.62, 7.81 and 3.9 μg·mL-1 on the bacteria Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Choleraesuis, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The fungicidal potential was evaluated by the method of dilution in agar, and the percentage inhibition of mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum was evaluated. The dilutions tested were 1000, 750, 500, 250 and 100 μL·L-1. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (mIC) of the essential oil for L. monocytogenes, S. aureus and E. coli were 31.25;15.62 and 62.5 μg·mL-1, respectively. The mIC was 500 μg·mL-1 for Salmonella Choleraesuis and P. aeruginosa. The percentage inhibitions of mycelial growth of B. cinerea and A. alternate were 67% and 33%, respectively, at the dilution of 750 μL·L-1. The essential oil inhibited about 48% of the mycelial growth of F. oxysporum, at the dilution of 1000 μL·L-1. The essential oil of H. carpinifolia presented biological activity against all the microorganisms evaluated.

Neglected tropical diseases are a group of tropical diseases endemic in poor countries even though medical treatment and cures are available. They are considered a global health problem due to the severity of the physiological changes they induce in their hosts. malaria is a disease caused by Plasmodium sp. that in its cerebral form may lead to acute or long-term neurological deficits, even with effective antimalarial therapy, causing vascular obstruction, reduced cerebral blood flow and many other changes. However, Plasmodium falciparum infection can also develop into a cerebral malaria(Cm) disease that can produce neurological damage. This review will discuss the mechanisms involved in the neuropathology caused by Cm, focusing on alterations in cognitive, behavior and neurological functions in human and experimental models.

Analysis of Nursing Care Concept: Perspective of the Person Submitted to Care

This study aimed to analyze the concept of nursing care to patients with breast cancer on chemotherapy treatment, according to the perspective of the person submitted to care. The study followed the conceptual analysis methodology proposed by Walker and Avant according to Waldow, and it was developed through consultation to SCOPUS and CINAHL databases. The selection was carried out by inclusion and exclusion criteria, constituting a sample of 7 articles. There have been identified the main uses of the risk concept, defining attributes, antecedents and consequences of the concept. The evaluation of the concept and nursing care to breast cancer patient on chemotherapy treatment allowed a broader understanding of the phenomenon, with emphasis on the skills and competencies in nursing care dispensed to woman on chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

Background:Pain emerges as a challenge in the treatment of leprosy *** this study,we describe the prevalence and type of pain in patients with leprosy,and its effect on patients’quality of life in an endemic area of Northeast ***:A cross-sectional survey of 260 patients attending leprosy reference centres in Sergipe,Northeast Brazil was *** were assessed for the presence and type of pain,skin sensory loss,peripheral nerve enlargement,touch and pinprick sensations,mechanical allodynia and nerve *** completed the Douleur Neuropathique 4 questionnaire,and we also used the Brief Pain Inventory scale and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF instrument to arrive at our *** hundred and ninety-five(75%)patients reported pain,mostly of the neuropathic *** was moderate in 84(43.1%)and severe in 94(48.2%)*** presence of pain was associated with disability(p=0.001),leprosy reactions(p=0.004)and lower quality of *** patients with neuropathic pain were treated with steroids,despite their low efficacy for this type of ***:Pain is highly prevalent among leprosy patients and is associated with low quality of *** management should include a systematic assessment of the type of pain a patient experiences in order to provide adequate treatment.

对梁-钢桁梁混凝土组合节点提出理论模型。对典型的腹板和底座的节点进行研究,以定义其弯矩-转动性能,包括初始刚度、抗弯强度和旋转能力。借助于4个考虑混凝土刚度和裂缝演化参数的幂函数,所提出的理论模型描述了节点的半刚性响应,并考虑混凝土板拉伸刚度的影响。将理论模型与4个十字型试验结果进行对比,其中分别为两个考虑和不考虑腹板角度的节点,很好地验证了所提出的弯矩-转动模型,并表明腹板角度对混凝土开裂过程有很大的影响。同时,试验结果证实了组合半刚性节点,混凝土开裂前和裂缝稳定后的作用以及腹板连接的螺栓实际效应和板中的剪力滞后效应等基本假设。

两个结构构件之间的可变连接,同时也可称为局部关联或者层间滑移。一般指组合的钢-混凝土梁和铰接或固定连接的梁。大多数研究集中在具有材料非线性的组合梁上。这些构件会承受压力和弯曲作用,需要考虑二阶效应。针对具有层间滑移的复合梁柱的非线性材料和几何分析,开发了一个基于位移的有限元模型,并对其进行测试。有限元模型完全基于Lagrangian假定,考虑了大位移、小应变和适当的转动。通过与文献中的算例进行对比,验证了所提方法的有效性与准确性。
