Watch and wait approach in rectal cancer:Current controversies and future directions

According to the main international clinical guidelines,the recommended treatment for locally-advanced rectal cancer is neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by ***,doubts have been raised about the appropriate definition of clinical complete response(cCR)after neoadjuvant therapy and the role of surgery in patients who achieve a *** resection is associated with significant morbidity and decreased quality of life(QoL),which is especially relevant given the favourable prognosis in this patient subset. Accordingly, therehas been a growing interest in alternative approaches with less morbidity,including the organ-preserving watch and wait strategy, in which surgery isomitted in patients who have achieved a cCR. These patients are managed with aspecific follow-up protocol to ensure adequate cancer control, including the earlyidentification of recurrent disease. However, there are several open questionsabout this strategy, including patient selection, the clinical and radiologicalcriteria to accurately determine cCR, the duration of neoadjuvant treatment, therole of dose intensification (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy), optimal followupprotocols, and the future perspectives of this approach. In the present review,we summarize the available evidence on the watch and wait strategy in thisclinical scenario, including ongoing clinical trials, QoL in these patients, and thecontroversies surrounding this treatment approach.

The influence of CEO’s financial literacy on SmEs technological innovation:the mediating effects of mCS and risk‑taking

Previous literature showed mixed results about the impact of CEOs’financial literacy(CFL)on small and medium-sized enterprises’(SmEs)*** relationship can be motivated by relevant variables,which are missing in the previous literature and make a difference as *** this sense,based on the theoretical framework related to upper echelon theory and resource-based view,this study focuses on the mediating effect of risk-taking attitude and management control systems(mCS)*** data from 310 SmEs gathered using a qualitative research questionnaire are analyzed using structural equation modeling ***,estimations are carried out considering the partial least square *** show that mCS and managers’risk attitudes fully mediate the relationship between financial literacy(FL)and *** these two mediating variables,the implementation of mCS stands out because it also enables the mediating effect of CEOs’risk-taking in the CFL–technological innovation *** the results do not support the significant direct relationship between FL and risk attitude,they confirm an indirect effect through ***,based on the study findings,SmEs’directors and owners,business associations,and public authorities can improve SmEs’technological innovation by implementing training programs and policies to foster *** can also acknowledge the interdependency between organizational factors and individual characteristics to enhance SmEs’technological innovation.

为了有效刻画拟合实际的多层交通网络级联失效过程,识别多层网络中对整体韧性安全影响显著的对象,提升交通网络抵抗失效的能力,建立一种基于耦合映象格子(Coupled map Lattice, CmL)的级联失效模型。首先,将交通管控措施赋予交通网络节点额外的容纳能力引申为节点抵抗特性,通过为CmL添加抵抗参数H,形成考虑抵抗特性的级联失效(HCmL)模型,沿常值-拓扑关联-时变拓扑关联的路径深化H的表征方式,并在小世界(Small World, SW)网络上对比3类表征方式的优劣;其次,应用Space H方法建立异质3层公共交通网络,对比度值与介数2种时变拓扑指标关联的抵抗效果,探究不同交通层抵抗系数对网络失效的影响程度;最后,在6组不同的网络结构上进行HCmL模型与传统模型的对比,讨论建网方法、网络规模等不同网络性质的差异对模型有效性的影响,并结合实际客运数据验证HCmL模型优越性。研究结果表明:3类表征方式中时变拓扑关联可以兼顾其余2类的优点;同等条件中网络在介数关联的抵抗特性作用下失效增速更缓,模型识别得到的对网络整体失效影响更大交通方式符合客流量实际;HCmL模型在多种不同类型的多层交通网络中均可以有效实施,相比于传统模型,HCmL模型的最终失效比例平均下降了5.78%,与实际交通级联失效过程更加拟合。

nonsuspended sediment transport driven by streams of liquid or air is an important driver of themorphodynamics of planetary landscapes,seascapes,and *** and field measurements of the sediment transport rate as a function of the fluid shear stress have enabled us to predict such processes with reasonable accuracy on ***,sediment transport is also ubiquitous in extraterrestrial environments,such as on Venus,mars,Titan,and occurs possibly even on *** raises the question of whether we can extrapolate transport rate expressions validated with measurements on Earth to extraterrestrial *** answer is probably,yes,but only if the used expressions capture the essential ***,using coupled DEm/RAnS numerical sediment transport simulations,we show that nonsuspended sediment transport in a large range of aeolian and fluvial environments has a conceptually simple common physical underpinning that allows treating these different transport regimes in a universal *** is,a conceptually simple universal model captures simulated and measured transport thresholds and transport *** particular,when the transport layer thickness substantially exceeds the viscous sublayer thickness(true for many environments),this model yields a mathematically simple transport rate expression that agrees,simultaneously,with existing measurements in air and water.

Plant and animal positive-sense single-stranded RnA viruses encode small proteins important for viral infection in their negative-sense strand

Positive-sense single-stranded RnA(+ssRnA)viruses,the most abundant viruses of eukaryotes in nature,require the synthesis of negative-sense RnA(-RnA)using their genomic(positive-sense)RnA(+RnA)as a template for *** on current evidence,viral proteins are translated via viral+RnAs,whereas-RnA is considered to be a viral replication intermediate without coding ***,we report that plant and animal+ssRnA viruses contain small open reading frames(ORFs)in their-RnA(reverse ORFs[rORFs]).Using turnip mosaic virus(TumV)as a model for plant+ssRnA viruses,we demonstrate that small proteins encoded by rORFs display specific subcellularlocalizations,and confirm the presence of rORF2 in infected cells through mass spectrometry *** protein encoded by TumV rORF2 forms punctuate granules that are localized in the perinuclear region and co-localized with viral replication *** rORF2 protein can directly interact with the viral RnA-dependent RnA polymerase,and mutation of rORF2 completely abolishes virus infection,whereas ectopic expression of rORF2 rescues the mutant ***,we show that several rORFs in the-RnA of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)have the ability to suppress type l interferon production and facilitate the infection of ve-sicular stomatitis *** addition,we provide evidence that TumV might utilize internal ribosome entry sites to translate these small *** together,these findings indicate that the-RnA of+ssRnA vi-ruses can also have the coding capacity and that small proteins encoded therein play critical roles in viral infection,revealing a viral proteome larger than previously thought.

Soil Conservation measures in Rainfed Olive Orchards in South-Eastern Spain: Impacts of Plant Strips on Soil Water Dynamics

Sloping and mountainous olive production systems are widespread, occupying large parts of the mediterranean landscape prone to water erosion. Soil erosion, runoff, and soil water content patterns over a three-year period were monitored in erosion plots on a mountainside with rainfed olive （Olea europaea cv. Picual） trees under： 1） non-tillage with barley strips of 4 m width （BS）; 2） non-tillage with native vegetation strips of 4 m width （nVS）; and 3） non-tillage without plant strips （nT）. The erosion plots, located in Lanjaron （Granada, south-eastern Spain）, on a 30% slope, were 192 m2 in area. For assessing soil water dynamics in real-time and near-continuous soil water content measurements, multisensor capacitance probes were installed in the middle of plant strips and beneath the olive tree at five soil depths （10, 20, 30, 50, and 100 cm）. The highest erosion and runoff rates were measured under nT, with a mean of 17.3 mg ha-1 year-1 and 140.0 mm year-1, respectively, over the entire study period. The BS and nVS with respect to the nT reduced erosion by 71% and 59% and runoff by 95% and 94%, respectively. In general, greater available soil water content was found under BS than nVS and nT, especially beneath the olive tree canopies. These results supported the recommendation of non-tillage with barley strips in order to reduce erosion and to preserve soil water for trees in traditional mountainous olive-producing areas, where orchards cover vast tracts of land.
