Background:Ruminants rely upon a complex community of microbes in their rumen to convert host-indigestible feed into ***,little is known about the association between the rumen microbiota and feed efficiency traits in Nellore(Bos indicus)cattle,a breed of major economic importance to the global beef ***,we compare the composition of the bacterial,archaeal and fungal communities in the rumen of Nellore steers with high and low feed efficiency(FE)phenotypes,as measured by residual feed intake(RFI).Results:The Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio was significantly higher(Pmposition from steers with high and low FE were mainly associated with members of the families Lachnospiraceae,Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae,as well as the genus *** community richness was lower(Pmethanobrevibacter was either increased or exclusive of p-RFI *** fungal genus Buwchfawromyces was more abundant in the rumen solid fraction of n-RFI steers(Pmyces was also increased in the rumen microbiota of highefficiency ***,analysis of rumen fermentation variables and functional predictions indicated similar metabolic outputs for the microbiota of distinct FE ***:Our results demonstrate that differences in the ruminal microbiota of high and low FE Nellore steers comprise specific taxa from the bacterial,archaeal and fungal *** OTUs belonging to the genus Piromyces were identified in animals showing high feed efficiency,whereas among archaea,methanobrevibacter was associated with steers classified as *** identification of specific RFI-associated microorganisms in Nellore steers could guide further studies targeting the isolation and functional characterization

Ecophysiological acclimatization to cyclic water stress in Eucalyptus

Drought is considered the main environmental factor limiting productivity in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, recent studies have reported that exposure to water deficit conditions enables plants to respond to subsequent stresses. Thus, this study investigates the ecophysiological acclimatization of eucalyptus clones submitted to recurrent water deficit cycles. Eucalyptus seedlings were submitted to three recurrent water deficit cycles and anatomical, morphological and physiological changes were analyzed. The results were:(1) Eucalyptus seedlings responded to water deficits by directing carbohydrates to root and stem growth;(2) Size and number of stomata were reduced;(3) Stomatal conductance decreased which allowed the plants to reduce water losses through transpiration,increasing instantaneous water use efficiency;(4) The relationship between gas exchanges and available water contents allowed the seedlings to uptake the retained soil water athigher tensions;and,(5) Physiological recovery from subsequent water deficits became faster. As a result of these changes, the eucalyptus seedlings recovered from the same degree of water stress more rapidly.

mathematical modeling and determination of Effective Diffusivity of mesquite during Convective Drying

The mesquite pods have a high nutritional value, being a rich source of sugars, proteins, minerals and fibers that can be used as a raw material for the development of a number of food products and technological innovations. The objective of this work was to study the drying kinetics of mesquite pods in a thin layer, 20 mm length and determine the effective diffusion coefficient by adjusting mathematical models that were based on heat transfer and mass fundamentals. For the experiments, we used mature mesquite, with 20% water content (b.u). Drying experiments were performed using temperatures of 50°C, 60°C, 70°C and 80°C with drying air speed of 2 m•s-1. It was used a convective dryer with fixed bed and upflow air. mathematical models of Fick, Page, Cavalcanti-mata, Two Exponential Terms and Henderson & Pabis were used to adjust the experimental data. To calculate the effective diffusivity, flat plate geometry with sample thickness of 6.5 mm was used. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the loss of water from mesquite occurred during the drying period in decreasing rate;and with increasing drying temperature, total process time was reduced. The diffusion coefficient increased by increasing drying temperature. mathematical models including theoretical (Fick), semi-theoretical (Page and Cavalcanti-mata) and empirical (Two Exponential Terms) models satisfactorily explain the experimental data of drying mesquite.

The Relationship between meteorological Variables and Clearness Index for Four Urban/Suburban Areas of Brazilian Cities

This study aimed to examine the relationship between meteorological variables and the clearness index for three sites in Cuiaba city and one site in Chapada dos Guimaraes city, Brazil during 2007. It described the microclimate of each site on the basis of constructive elements and their surroundings, considering sky coverage using a daily clearness index. The results were that micrometeorological values were influenced by the natural elements and construction within the surrounding site, with higher air temperatures in more urbanized areas and sites with high diffuse radiation. When determining the sky coverage, on average, the days were partly cloudy or cloudy due to two reasons：（a） during the wet season, rainfall created cloudy conditions and （b） during the dry season, increases of particulates in the atmosphere as a result of anthropogenic emissions of gases and aerosols in this region of the state resulted in sky conditions classified as partly cloudy and cloudy. Future research should aim to better quantify the measurements taken inside an urban area, considering the topography and vegetation cover. This will improve the models that support urban planning, therefore favoring the thermal comfort of areas already occupied or to be urbanized.

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition of essential oil from fruits(EOAF)and the hexanic crude extract from aerial parts(At-Hex)of atemoya(Annona cherimola x Annona squamosa),a hybrid belonging to the Annonaceae *** and antimicrobial activity was also *** was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus,and their composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-mS)*** was tested against human tumor cell lines HCT-116(colon carcinoma),SF-295(glioblastoma),OVCAR-8(ovarian carcinoma)and HL60(leukemia)using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide(mTT)assay,while antimicrobial activity was conducted by bioauthography method against eleven microorganisms ***-four compounds were identified in the EOAF and twenty-nine in *** monoterpenes linalool(25.70%),α-pinene(10.38%),β-pinene(9.12%),transocimene(7.43%),and the sesquiterpene bicyclogermacrene(12.58%)were the major constituents of EOAF,whereas the sesquiterpene spathulenol(13.91%)was the main compound of ***-Hex showed a high cytotoxicity against SF-295(glioblastoma).These findings show an important chemotaxonomic contribution for the Annonaceae family,mainly for the Annona *** proved to be a promising source of substances with potential cytotoxic activity.

Influence of Tomographic Slice Thickness and Field of View Variation on the Reproduction of Thin Bone Structures for Rapid Prototyping Purposes-An in Vitro Study

This study assessed the influence of acquisition parameters of tomographic volumes on the reproduction of thin bone structures for rapid prototyping purposes. Two parameters were investigated: Field of View (FOV) and Slice Thickness (ST). The specimen was comprised of five pairs of 0.6 mm, 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm thick cortical bone plates. The plates were stuck into utility wax;the first plate of the pair was in vertical position while the second plate was oblique to the first one. Forty-five tomographic images were captured and separated into 3 groups of fifteen images. Each group had a specific FOV: 180 mm;250 mm and 430 mm, respectively. Within each of these three groups, tomographic slice thickness was varied for every five of the fifteen slices. Acquisitions were carried out with STs of 1 mm, 2.5 mm and 5 mm. The Cyclops medical Station software was used in the voxel-to-voxel analysis of radiologic density, reaching a total of 1350 assessed images. ST and FOV variation influenced the reproduction of thin bone walls, and FOV was shown to be a very important parameter. The larger the acquisition FOV, the more reduction in the number of voxels within the range of reconstruction for cortical bone in all of the bone plates. The visual analysis of the images of very thin bone walls showed that there could be a sharp drop in the radiologic density value in several adjacent voxels, resulting in areas which might not be reproduced in the reconstruction.
