The influence of ethanol on the adsorption capacity and desorption kinetics of benzene and toluene on bentonite and kaolin through modeling and experimental study was *** results showed that the adsorption capacity of both soils for the target compounds decreased as ethanol content *** ethanol content increased from 0 to 50%,the adsorption capacity for benzene and toluene on bentonite decreased from 3.6 to 0.54 μg n＋1 /（L n ·g）（by 85%） and 1.91 to 0.01 μg n＋1 /（L n ·g）（by 99.5%）,*** benzene and toluene adsorption on kaolin,the adsorption capacity decreased by 86.5% （from 0.26 to 0.04 μg n＋1 /（L n ·g） and 98.2% （from 0.13 to 0.002 μg n＋1 /（L n ·g））,respectively,as ethanol content increased from 0 to 50%.In addition,the desorption rate of benzene and toluene from bentonite decreased by about one order of magnitude as the ethanol increased from 0 to 25% and 0 to 50%,*** can be inferred that ethanol could affect the effectiveness of natural attenuation processes that rely on adsorption to soils as a containment technique for benzene and toluene by retarding the adsorption to soils and remobilizing compounds that had already been adsorbed to soils.

The gold standard for curative treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer involves radical resection with a total mesorectal excision(TmE). TmE is the most effective treatment strategy to reduce local recurrence and improve survival outcomes regardless of the surgical platform used. However, there are associated morbidities, functional consequences, and quality of life(QoL) issues associated with TmE; these risks must be considered during the modern-day multidisciplinary treatment for rectal cancer. This has led to the development of new surgical techniques to improve patient, oncologic, and QoL outcomes. In this work, we review the evolution of TmE to the transanal total mesorectal excision(TaTmE) through more traditional minimally invasive platforms. The review the development, safety and feasibility, proposed benefits and risks of the procedure, implementation and education models, and future direction for research and implementation of the TaTmE in colorectal surgery. While satisfactory short-term results have been reported, the procedure is in its infancy, and long term outcomes and definitive results from controlled trials are *** evidence for safety and feasibility accumulates,structured training programs to standardize teaching,training, and safe expansion will aid the safe spread of the TaTmE.

Background:Dietary specialization should arise when there is a relatively high abundance of a particular resource,where animals may select food items to obtain an optimal diet that maximizes energy ***‑bodied psittacines frequently exhibit a narrow dietary niche with specific habitat use,but few studies have determined whether psittacines select food resources,and how this influences habitat ***:We established fruiting phenology transects to evaluate food resource availability for the large‑bodied military macaw(Ara militaris)in semi‑deciduous,deciduous,and pine‑oak forest at two sites along the coast of Jalisco,during the dry season when macaws are *** also determined military macaw diet by observations of foraging macaws along transect routes,and conducted bromatological analysis of the nutritional content of the most consumed ***:military macaws used six plant species as food items during the dry season,and had a narrow dietary niche(Levins’B=0.28),with 56%of foraging macaws consuming the seeds of Hura *** food resources were recorded in pine‑oak forest during the dry season,with food resources and foraging by macaws concentrated in tropical deciduous and semi‑deciduous forest,where *** was the most abundant fruiting tree *** considering the proportional availability of food resources,we determined a broad Hurlbert dietary niche breadth of H=0.67,indicating that military macaws consumed food resources according to their ***,the seeds of *** were an important source of protein,carbohydrates,minerals and moisture,and the hard fruitcasing means that these seeds are exclusively available for ***:By concentrating their diet on the most abundant resources,military macaws may increase foraging efficiency in the dry *** high nutrient content also means that concentrating the diet on seeds of *** may be an optimal foraging strategy for military macaws

Species may exhibit similar traits via different mechanisms: environmental filtering and local adaptation (geography) and shared evolutionary history (phylogeny) can each contribute to the resemblance of traits among species. Parsing trait variation into geographic and phylogenetic sources is important, as each suggests different constraints on trait evolution. Here, we explore how phylogenetic distance, geographic distance, and geographic variation in climate shape physiological tolerance of high and low temperatures using a global dataset of ant thermal tolerances. We found generally strong roles for evolutionary history and geographic variation in temperature, but essentially no detectable effects of spatial proximity on either upper or lower thermal tolerance. When we compared the relative importance of the factors shaping upper and lower tolerances, we found a much stronger role for evolutionary history in shaping upper versus lower tolerance, and a moderately weaker role for geographic variation in temperature in shaping upper tolerance when compared with lower tolerance. Our results demonstrate how geographic variation in climate and evolutionary history may have differential effects on the upper and lower endpoints of physiological tolerance. This Janus effect, where the relative contributions of geographic variation in climate and evolutionary history are reversed for lower versus upper physiological tolerances, has gained some support in the literature, and our results for ant physiological tolerances provide further evidence of this pattern. As the climate continues to change, the high phylogenetic conservatism of upper tolerance may suggest potential constraints on the evolution of tolerance of high temperatures.

Gene Expression Profiling of Human Epidermal Keratinocytes in Simulated microgravity and Recovery Cultures

Simulated microgravity （SmG） bioreactors and DNA microarray technology are powerful tools to identify ＂space genes＂ that play key roles in cellular response to microgravity. We applied these biotechnology tools to investigate SmG and post-SmG recovery effects on human epidermal keratinocytes by exposing cells to SmG for 3, 4, 9, and 10 d using the high aspect ratio vessel bioreactor followed by recovery culturing for 15, 50, and 60 d in normal gravity. As a result, we identified 162 differentially expressed genes, 32 of which were ＂center genes＂ that were most consistently affected in the time course experiments. Eleven of the center genes were from the integrated stress response pathways and were coordinately downregulated. Another seven of the center genes, which are all metallothionein mT-Ⅰ and mT-Ⅱ isoforms, were coordinately up-regulated. In addition, HLA-G, a key gene in cellular immune response suppression, was found to be significantly upregulated during the recovery phase. Overall, more than 80% of the differentially expressed genes from the shorter exposures （≤4 d） recovered in 15 d; for longer （≥9 d） exposures, more than 50 d were needed to recover to the impact level of shorter exposures. The data indicated that shorter SmG exposure duration would lead to quicker and more complete recovery from the microgravity effect.

Postpartum depression affects parents across all social, economic, and racial groups. While there are many factors that may contribute to depressive symptoms in the postpartum period, under-resourced populations and ethnic minorities are documented to experience higher rates. Traditional psychotherapeutic methods have shown success in mitigating depressive symptoms;however, these treatments are not always accessible and/or utilized, particularly in populations with the highest need. mind-body interventions have become increasingly popular in addressing perinatal mental health, and new and innovative approaches are currently being evaluated to determine their efficacy with respect to treating postpartum depression. This scoping review highlights published clinical trials, interventions, meta-analyses, and reviews conducted in the last 20 years and examines how each method applies to meet the needs of postpartum parents, and particularly under-resourced populations.

The Two Cultures of Science: Implications for University-Industry Relationships in the U.S. Agriculture Biotechnology

Partnerships between U.S. universities and industries have existed for several decades and in recent years have become generally more varied, wider in scope, more aggressive and experimental and higher in public visibility. In addition, in the last few decades, public and private interests have advocated for government policies and laws to globally promote the commercialization of university science. This paper examines the persistence or convergence of the two cultures of science and the implications of this commercialization for university-industry relationships in agriculture biotechnology. The perceptions and values of over 200 U.S. university and industry scientists, managers and administrators who participate in or oversee research collaborations in agricultural biotechnology were analyzed. The findings revealed that the participants in these research relationships continue to perceive very distinct cultures of science and identify a wide range of concerns and disadvantages of these partnerships. Several actions were discussed to ensure that the two cultures serve complementary roles and that they maximize the public benefits from these increasing collaborations.
