The provision of environmental enrichment to numerous species of laboratory animals is generally considered routine husbandry. However, mouse enrichment has proven to be very complex due to the often contradictory outcomes(animal health and welfare, variability in scientific data, etc.) associated with strain, age of the animal when enrichment is provided, gender of the animal, scientific use of the animal,and other housing attributes. While this has led to some suggesting that mice should not be provided enrichment, more recently opinion is trending toward acknowledging that enrichment actually normalizes the animal and data obtained from a mouse living in a barren environment are likely not to be representative or even reliable. This article offers an overview of the types of impact enrichment can have on various strains of mice and demonstrates that enrichment not only has a role in mouse husbandry, but also can lead to new areas of scientific enquiry in a number of different fields.

BACKGROUND Primary thumb carpometacarpal(CMC)osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions encountered by hand *** the vast number of operations that have been proposed,none have demonstrated results significantly superior to trapeziectomy *** The purpose of our study was to determine why surgeons opt for their technique in treating CMC *** A cross-sectional survey of active members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand was conducted to evaluate the reasons behind their preferred technique in the treatment of isolated thumb CMC *** were contacted by email once and provided with a link to a de-identified survey consisting of 5 treatment questions and 5 demographic *** Of 950 responses were received.40.5%of surgeons preferred trapeziectomy+ligament reconstruction tendon interposition(LRTI),followed by trapeziectomy+suspensionplasty(28.2%),suture button suspension(5.9%),trapeziectomy alone(4.6%),prosthetic arthroplasty(3.2%),arthrodesis(1.1%),and other(6.6%).Proponents of trapeziectomy+LRTI cited familiarity(73.2%),exposure during fellowship(48.8%)and less proximal migration(60%)to be the main reasons affecting their *** who preferred trapeziectomy+suspensionplasty most reported simplicity(74.9%),fewer complications(45.3%),less proximal migration(43.8%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(42.7%).Advocates of suture button suspension cited avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(80.4%),shorter immobilization(76.8%),and quicker recovery(73.2%)with their *** of trapeziectomy alone cited simplicity(97.7%),fewer complications(86.4%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest(59.1%).In their comments,45%of surgeons choosing trapeziectomy alone cited evidence as an additional *** of prosthetic arthroplasty cited improved pinch strength(83.3%)and improved range of motion(63.3%),while those preferring arthrodesis cited better pinch strength(90%)and freque

Estrogen is implicated as playing an important role in aging and tumorigenesis of estrogen responsive tissues;however the mechanisms underlying the mitogenic actions of estrogen are not fully *** we report that estrogen deficiency in mice caused by targeted disruption of the aromatase gene results in a signi-ficant inhibition of telomerase maintenance of telomeres in mouse ovaries in a tissue-specific *** inhibition entails a significant shortening of telomeres and compromised proliferation in the follicular granulosa cell compartment of *** expression analysis showed decreased levels of proto-oncogene c-Myc and the telomerase catalytic subunit,telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT),in response to estrogen *** replacement therapy led to increases in TERT gene expression,telomerase activity,telomere length and ovarian tissue growth,thereby reinstating ovary development to normal in four *** data demonstrate for the first time that telomere maintenance is the primary mechanism mediating the mitogenic effect of estrogen on ovarian granulosa cell proliferation by upregulating the genes of c-Myc and TERT in *** deficiency or over-activity may cause ovarian tissue aging or tumorigenesis,respectively,through estrogen regulation of telomere remodeling.

A microgrid is a combination of distributed energy resources and controllable loads. The main objective of this research is to optimize energy flow within a microgrid with regards to reliability in grid connected mode. A microgrid with combined heat and power, natural gas generator, diesel generator, solar energy, wind energy, and battery energy storage along with a critical load is considered in this research. An event oriented analytical method called FTA （fault trees analysis） is implemented for reliability optimization using PTC Windchill Solutions software in a microgrid. The reliability of each component in each energy source of the microgrid is calculated using FTA. The reliability of the critical load is evaluated. The quantitative and qualitative results of FTA are evaluated in order to interpret the results of fault tree. The sensitivity and uncertainty of the fault tree results for critical load is deduced by calculating the importance measures such as risk achievement worth, risk reduction worth, criticality importance and Fussel-Vesely importance. Finally from the results the components that are sensitive and at high risk are deduced.
