Brief electrical nerve stimulation enhances intrinsic repair capacity of the focally demyelinated central nervous system

Our lab has shown that brief electrical nerve stimulation(ES)has a dramatic impact on remyelination of lysophosphatidyl choline(LPC)-induced focally demyelinated rat peripheral nerves,while also inducing an axon-protective phenotype and shifting macrophages from a predominantly pro-inflammatory toward a pro-repair *** this same potential exists in the central nervous system is not ***,for proof of principle studies,the peripheral nerve demyelination and ES model was adapted to the central nervous system,whereby a unilateral focal LPC-induced demyelination of the dorsal column at the lumbar enlargement where the sciatic nerve afferents enter was created,so that subsequent ipsilateral sciatic nerve ES results in increased neural activity in the demyelinated *** reveal a robust focal demyelination at 7 days post-LPC *** of 1-hour ES at 7 days post-LPC polarizes macrophages/microglia toward a pro-repair phenotype when examined at 14 days post-LPC;results in smaller LPC-associated regions of inflammation compared to non-stimulated controls;results in significantly more cells of the oligodendroglial lineage in the demyelinated region;elevates myelin basic protein levels;and shifts the paranodal protein Caspr along demyelinated axons to a more restricted distribution,consistent with reformation of the paranodes of the nodes of *** also significantly enhanced levels of phosphorylated neurofilaments detected in the zones of demyelination,which has been shown to confer axon *** these findings support that strategies that increase neural activity,such as brief electrical stimulation,can be beneficial for promoting intrinsic repair following focal demyelinating insults in demyelinating diseases such as multiple *** animal procedures performed were approved by the University of Saskatchewan's Animal Research Ethics Board(protocol#20090087;last approval date:November 5,2020).

The current advancement in cloud computing,Artificial Intelligence(AI),and the Internet of Things(IoT)transformed the traditional healthcare system into smart *** services could be enhanced by incorporating key techniques like AI and *** convergence of AI and IoT provides distinct opportunities in the medical *** is regarded as a primary cause of death or post-traumatic complication for the ageing ***,earlier detection of older person falls in smart homes is required to improve the survival rate of an individual or provide the necessary ***,the emergence of IoT,AI,smartphones,wearables,and so on making it possible to design fall detection(FD)systems for smart home *** article introduces a new Teamwork Optimization with Deep Learning based Fall Detection for IoT Enabled Smart Healthcare Systems(TWODLFDSHS).The TWODL-FDSHS technique’s goal is to detect fall events for a smart healthcare ***,the presented TWODL-FDSHS technique exploits IoT devices for the data collection ***,the TWODLFDSHS technique applies the TWO with Capsule Network(CapsNet)model for feature *** last,a deep random vector functional link network(DRVFLN)with an Adam optimizer is exploited for fall event detection.A wide range of simulations took place to exhibit the enhanced performance of the presentedTWODL-FDSHS *** experimental outcomes stated the enhancements of the TWODL-FDSHS method over other models with increased accuracy of 98.30%on the URFD dataset.

No plant functional diversity effects on foliar fungal pathogens in experimental tree communities

Foliar fungal pathogens affect forest ecosystem processes by exerting highly species-specific impacts on growth and survival of *** many ecosystem processes in forests depend on functional diversity of specific tree species,a close relationship is expected between this and foliar fungal pathogen *** for such a relationship in the German tree diversity experiment BIOTREE(Bechstedt),we hypothesized that pathogen richness and pathogen load decline with increasing functional diversity of tree *** macro-and microscopic analyses,we assessed pathogen richness and load on 16 tree species in plots that,although differing in functional diversity,had the same tree species *** found no effects of functional diversity on pathogen richness or ***,we encountered strong species identity effects in plot species composition,as susceptible tree species contributed positively to each community’s pathogen richness and ***,testing for effects of particular leaf traits and geographical range size of host species revealed a significant effect of total leaf phenolics,which was unexpected as pathogen richness increased with increasing content in *** study showed that at the community level,host species’identity was more important for foliar fungal pathogen richness and load than the functional diversity of host *** positive relationship between pathogen richness and phenolics in leaves,along with the finding that pathogen richness is very much conserved in tree species,point to an evolutionary arms race between hosts and fungi resulting from fungi increasing their capacity to infect tree leaves and trees boosting their defences.

Melanoma is a skin disease with high mortality rate while earlydiagnoses of the disease can increase the survival chances of patients. Itis challenging to automatically diagnose melanoma from dermoscopic skinsamples. Computer-Aided Diagnostic (CAD) tool saves time and effort indiagnosing melanoma compared to existing medical approaches. In this background,there is a need exists to design an automated classification modelfor melanoma that can utilize deep and rich feature datasets of an imagefor disease classification. The current study develops an Intelligent ArithmeticOptimization with Ensemble Deep Transfer Learning Based MelanomaClassification (IAOEDTT-MC) model. The proposed IAOEDTT-MC modelfocuses on identification and classification of melanoma from dermoscopicimages. To accomplish this, IAOEDTT-MC model applies image preprocessingat the initial stage in which Gabor Filtering (GF) technique is *** addition, U-Net segmentation approach is employed to segment the lesionregions in dermoscopic images. Besides, an ensemble of DL models includingResNet50 and ElasticNet models is applied in this study. Moreover, AOalgorithm with Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) method is utilized for identificationand classification of melanoma. The proposed IAOEDTT-MC methodwas experimentally validated with the help of benchmark datasets and theproposed model attained maximum accuracy of 92.09% on ISIC 2017 dataset.

Muscle energy technique for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:A feasibility study

Objective:This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a manual therapy technique(muscle energy technique,MET)protocol in a hospital pulmonary rehabilitation(PR)program for patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Methods:Participants aged 40 years and over,with moderate to severe COPD,were recruited into this 12-week *** primary outcome measures were feasibility(acceptability of the intervention and attendance/adherence to the trial)and safety(adverse events,AEs).All participants received the MET and PR *** and assessors were ***-standardized MET was delivered on 6 occasions(a maximum of once per week)at the hospital directly before a PR *** undertook PR sessions as per the hospital program at a frequency of two days per week for 8 *** were contacted 4 weeks after their final MET treatment via a telephone call to assess acceptability of the ***:Thirty-three participants were enrolled,with a median age of 74 years(range 45-89 years).The median number of MET sessions that participants attended was 5(range O-6)out of a possible 6 sessions(83%attendance).At follow-up,participants overwhelmingly enjoyed the MET treatment with some subjectively reporting improved *** were no major AEs related to the intervention,with the majority of AEs classified as expected events related to COPD ***:It is feasible to implement a manual therapy protocol using MET as an adjunct to PR in a hospital *** rates were satisfactory and there were no AEs related to the MET component of the intervention.

Cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE)and silicone rubber(SiR)samples were subjected to a high-voltage AC stress plane-plane configuration and inclined plane test,*** voltage was applied such that discharge was observed across the surface of the XLPE test sample for several hours and for visible damage to occur on SiR samples also after several *** stressed samples together with virgin samples from the same manufactured batch were tested using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)***,^(1)H NMR spin-lattice(T_(1))and spin-spin(T_(2))relaxation time measurements were employed to examine potential changes in the chemical bonding of undamaged and damaged XLPE and SiR *** results show that there may be a moderate increase in the T_(1)and T_(2)values of the damaged samples in comparison with the undamaged *** raises the possibility that NMR can be a useful additional experimental tool in characterising material degradation.

Effects of vitamin supplementation on inflammatory markers and psychological wellbeing among distressed women:a randomized controlled trial

Background： Multivitamins are a popular supplement taken to promote physical and mental health. During periods of stress, they may have a protective role for health and wellbeing, although the current evidence of their efficacy is mixed. Objective： To determine whether multivitamin supplementation impacts psychological and inflammatory markers of women who are experiencing psychological distress. Design, setting, participants and interventions： An 8-week randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess changes in both psychological state and pro-inflammatory markers of patients receiving multivi- tamins or placebo. The sample comprised women who reported elevated psychological distress in the previous 4 weeks. Main outcome measures： Psychological state was assessed using Spielberger＇s State-Trait Personality Inventory to assess anxiety, curiosity, depression and anger. Pro-inflammatory markers comprised interleukin （IL）-113, IL-5, IL-6, turnout necrosis factor （TNF）-α and TNF-6. Results： Improvements across time were observed for all psychological measures and cytokines, except IL-5, but were independent of the active intervention. Only TNF-β demonstrated a significant differential change between groups over the course of the intervention, in favour of multivitamin supplementation （active group mean rank decreased from 11.1 to 7.1 ; placebo group mean rank decreased from 8.9 to 7.8）. Conclusion： The results suggest that administration of multivitamins was not effective in improving psychological stare. However, some evidence supported the positive impact of multivitamin supplementation on pro-inflammatory cytokine profiles of women currently experiencing stress.

Transparency is a widely used but poorly defined term within the explainable artificial intelligence *** is due,in part,to the lack of an agreed definition and the overlap between the connected—sometimes used synonymously—concepts of interpretability and *** assert that transparency is the overarching concept,with the tenets of interpretability,explainability,and predictability *** draw on a portfolio of definitions for each of these distinct concepts to propose a human-swarm-teaming transparency and trust architecture(HST3-Architecture).The architecture reinforces transparency as a key contributor towards situation awareness,and consequently as an enabler for effective trustworthy human-swarm teaming(HST).
