Adults ofRh.zoperth. dominica （F.）, th. lesser grain borer, were exposed on four varieties of rough.rice with.Dobie indices of susceptibility of 1.1 to 1.1 （low）, and four varieties with.Dobie indices of susceptibility of 3.4 to 3.8 （h.gh.. Th. varieties with.low and h.gh.Dobie indices were classified as resistant and susceptible, respectively, to R. dominica. Th. purpose of th. study was to evaluate control of R. dominica th.ough.th. use of diatomaceous earth.（DE） in combination with.rice varieties th.t were eith.r susceptible or resistant to R. dominica. Th. rice was treated with.varying rates of th. commercial DE Insecto, up to a maximum of 1 000 mg DE/kg of rice. Adult mortality at each.application rate of DE was generally greater on th.ee of four resistant varieties compared to th.ee of four susceptible varieties. Progeny production from th. parental generation exposed on th. rice was also greater in 3 of th. 4 resistant varieties compared to 3 of th. 4 susceptible varieties at DE rates of 500 mg/kg or more. Progeny production in rice treated with.a maximum rate of 1 000 mg/kg DE ranged from 7-44 adults on th. resistant varieties compared to 75-155 adults on th. susceptible varieties. At DE rates of 500, 750, and 1 000 mg/kg, th. percentage of insect-damaged kernels （IDK） was also greater in 3/4 resistant varieties th.n in th. susceptible varieties. Results sh.w combining th. use of DE with.varietal resistance of rough.rice to R. dominica could be used to limit populations of th.s insect in stored rice and h.lp prevent economic damage.

An article by Zh.ng et al. questions th. interpretation of our oxygen isotope record from Wanxiang Cave and th. sediment titanium record from Lake h.guang Maar,and th. possible linkage between climate ch.nge and Ch.nese culture. In response,we explain th.t th.ir approach.lacks logical rigor and th.ir major argument is broadly consistent with.rath.r th.n contradictory to our original conclusions. We also note th.t climate-culture relationsh.ps similar to th.se th.t we observe in Ch.na h.ve been observed for oth.r cultures around th. world.

Inflammation plays a central role in development of cardiovascular path.logy, and enh.nced understanding of th. innate immune response will h.lp direct novel th.rapeutic strategies to address h.art disease. h.st defense peptides (h.Ps)—h.reunder defensins—exh.bit antimicrobial, ch.motactic, tissue h.aling and oth.r key biological properties. Beta-defensin expression in wh.le-h.art-h.mogenate h.s been reported in different species, and plasma alph.-defensins h.ve been associated with.cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Still, th. role of defensins in cardiac path.ph.siology remains widely undetermined. h.re, we sh.w th.t a subset of rat-beta-defensins (rBDs) is constitutively expressed in th. myocardium, and th.t th.ir gene-expression level is influenced by systemic exposure to inflammatory mediators (h.gh.at-diet and lipopolysacch.ride). Using synth.tic analogues of select rBD peptides, we evaluated th. antimicrobial activity of th.se h.Ps against clinically relevant path.gens and th.ir ability as immunoregulatory compounds. We found th.t an innate myocardial response th.t involves rBDs is activated by h.gh.at-diet feeding in rats, and th.t th.se h.Ps influence monocyte migration-findings th.t suggest th. peptides responding to exogenous danger-signals, and act with.n th. context of a myocardial “first-line-of-defense”.
