Today,cancer had been described as one of the deadliest diseases *** has been estim.ted that cancer causes about 9.9 m.llion deaths in the year *** conventional treatm.nt for the disease involves single chem.therapy or a com.ination of m.no-chem.therapy and or a com.ination of m.no-chem.therapy and ***,there are negative sides to these approaches which have prom.ted the search for new therapeutic *** view of this,scientific com.unities have started looking for innovative sources of anticancer com.ound of natural origin which include traditional ***,several studies have evaluated the anticancer properties of bioactive com.onents(phytochem.cals)derived from.the plants both in vivo and in *** phytochem.cals are secondary m.tabolites or chem.cal com.ound produced during m.tabolic process in plants which are useful in the protection of *** of these phytochem.cals such as alkaloid,flavonoids,phenolic com.ounds,cyanidin,fisetin,genistein,gingerol kaem.ferol,quercetin,resveratrol possessed certain m.dicinal properties and found to have num.rous applications in pharm.ceutical industries for treatm.nt of *** paper was aim.d to review som. plants bioactive com.onents(phytochem.cals)used in cancer treatm.nt.

Objective:Psychosocial stress has been im.licated in the genesis of psychiatric disorders such as m.m.ry deficits,depression,anxiety and *** leaf extract of Cym.opogon citratus(CYC)otherwise known as lem.ngrass tea has antidepressant,anxiolytic and anti-am.esic effects in *** study was designed to evaluate if C citratus could reverse the neurobehavioral and biochem.cal derangem.nts induced by social defeat stress(SDS)in the resident/intruder ***:Intruder m.le m.ce were divided into five groups(n=7):group 1 received saline(10 m./kg,p.o.;non-stress control),group 2 also received saline(10 m./kg,p.o.;SDS control)while groups 3-5 had ***(50,100 and 200 m./kg,p.o.)daily for 14 *** SDS was carried out 30 m.n after each treatm.nt from.day 7 to day 14 by exposing each intruder m.use in groups 2-5 to a 10 m.n confrontation in the hom. cage of an aggressive resident *** neurobehavioral features(spontaneous m.tor activity-Sm.,anxiety,m.m.ry,social avoidance and depression were then *** concentrations of nitrite,m.londialdehyde and glutathione as well as acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain tissues were also ***:***(50,100 and 200 m./kg)attenuated hypolocom.tion,heightened anxiety,depressive-like sym.tom.m.m.ry deficit and social avoidance induced by *** altered levels of oxidative stress and acetyl-cholinesterase in SDS-m.ce were positively m.dulated by ***:The results of this study suggest that *** m.ght m.tigate psychosocial stress-induced neurologic diseases in susceptible individuals.

Cost-Effective Ophthalm.c Surgical Wetlab Using the Porcine Orbit with a Sim.le Dissection Protocol

Objective: To describe the dissection protocol for the pig head to obtain the orbital tissue, as well as a sim.le setup for ophthalm.c surgical wetlabs. m.thods and Analysis: A descriptive study. The pig head dissection was perform.d at the abattoir for convenience. The orbital tissue thus obtained was used to set up the wetlab workstation. Results: A cost-effective, low technology, affordable set-up for ophthalm.c surgical wetlab protocol was developed. High resolution photographs of the procedure were taken and were presented for ease of description. The dissection protocol was test-run at an ophthalm.c surgical training workshop. Conclusions: The porcine orbit and the wetlab setup were available and affordable. The dissection in the abattoir is easy and reproducible. The orbit was used instead of the enucleated globe and this ensures stability throughout surgical practice sessions.

Bio-chem.cal characterization of bacterial flora associated with spoilt vegetables in kaduna m.rkets Northern Nigeria

Som. vegetables such as Capsicum.annum.(Pepper), Lycopersicon esculentum.(Tom.to), Allium.cepa (Onion), Cucum.s sativus (Cucum.er), Solanum.tubero- sum.(Potato) and Daucus carrota (Carrot) which are consum.d m.re frequently in the area were obtained from.Kaduna central m.rket and Kawo m.rket with the aim.of isolating and characterizing the different bacterial flora associated with their spoilage. Four bacteriological m.dia: m.nnitol Salt Agar (m.A), m.cConkey Agar (m.), Salm.nella Shigella Agar (SSA) and Blood Agar (BA) were used for the isolation of the bacterial populations. The results obtained from.Kaduna central m.rket indicated the presence of two Gram.positive bacteria viz: Staphylococcus and Streptococcus strains as well as three Gram.negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Citrobacter and Klebsiella spp. Staphylococcus aureus is the m.st abundant (with 80% relative occurrence) with Strep-tococcus spp being the least abundant (with 10% relative occurrence). Furtherm.re, am.ng the Gram.negative isolates, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter and Kleb- siella spp had the highest occurrence of 30% each, while Enterobacter spp had the least. Sim.lar results were obtained of the isolates from.Kawo m.rket except that am.ng the Gram.negatives, Edwardsiella spp was found in Kawo m.rket but E. coli is absent. m.re so, S. aureus and K. spp has the highest percentage of 605 each in Kawo m.rket. The result showed that the people consum.ng these vegetables are at higher risk of boils, carbuncles, im.etigo, infections of wounds and burns, breast abscesses, whitlow, osteom.elitis, bronchopneum.nia, septicem.a, bacterem.a, acute endocarditis, food poisoning and scalded skin syndrom. due to these bacterial populations.
