We herein report the removal of amodiaquine, an emerging drug contaminant from aqueous solution using [Zn2（fum）2（bpy）] and [Zn4 o（bdc）3]（fum = fumaric acid; bpy =4,4-bipyridine; bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate） metal–organic frameworks（MoFs） as adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared（FT-IR） spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction（PXRD）. Adsorption process for both adsorbents were found to follow the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the adsorption equilibrium data fitted best into the Freundlich isotherm with the R2 values of 0.973 and0.993 obtained for [Zn2（fum）2（bpy）] and [Zn4 o（bdc）3] respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities foramodiaquine in this study were found to be 0.478 and 47.62 mg/g on the[Zn2（fum）2（bpy）] and [Zn4 o（bdc）3] MoFs respectively, and were obtained at p H of 4.3 for both adsorbents. FT-IR spectroscopy analysis of the MoFs after the adsorption process showed the presence of the drug. The results of the study showed that the prepared MoFs could be used for the removal of amodiaquine from wastewater.

The world at large has been confronted with several disease outbreak which has posed and still posing a serious menace to public health globally.Recently,CoVID-19 a new kind of coronavirus emerge from Wuhan city in China and was declared a pandemic by the World Health organization.There has been a reported case of about 8622985 with global death of 457,355 as of 15.05 GMT,June 19,2020.South-Africa,Egypt,Nigeria and Ghana are the most affected African countries with this outbreak.Thus,there is a need to monitor and predict CoVID-19 prevalence in this region for effective control and management.Different statistical tools and time series model such as the linear regression model and autoregressive integrated moving average(ARIMA)models have been applied for disease prevalence/incidence prediction in different diseases outbreak.However,in this study,we adopted the ARIMA model to forecast the trend of CoVID-19 prevalence in the aforementioned African countries.The datasets examined in this analysis spanned from February 21,2020,to June 16,2020,and was extracted from theWorld Health organization website.ARIMA models with minimum Akaike information criterion correction(AICc)and statistically significant parameters were selected as the best models.Accordingly,the ARIMA(0,2,3),ARIMA(0,1,1),ARIMA(3,1,0)and ARIMA(0,1,2)models were chosen as the best models for SA,Nigeria,and Ghana and Egypt,respectively.Forecasting was made based on the best models.It is noteworthy to claim that the ARIMA models are appropriate for predicting the prevalence of CoVID-19.We noticed a form of exponential growth in the trend of this virus in Africa in the days to come.Thus,the government and health authorities should pay attention to the pattern of CoVID-19 in Africa.Necessary plans and precautions should be put in place to curb this pandemic in Africa.

The coronavirus outbreak is the most notable world crisis since the SecondWorldWar.The pandemic that originated from Wuhan,China in late 2019 has affected all the nations of the world and triggered a global economic crisis whose impact will be felt for years to come.This necessitates the need to monitor and predict CoVID-19 prevalence for adequate control.The linear regression models are prominent tools in predicting the impact of certain factors on CoVID-19 outbreak and taking the necessary measures to respond to this crisis.The data was extracted from the NCDC website and spanned from March 31,2020 to May 29,2020.In this study,we adopted the ordinary least squares estimator to measure the impact of travelling history and contacts on the spread of CoVID-19 in Nigeria and made a prediction.The model was conducted before and after travel restriction was enforced by the Federal government of Nigeria.The fitted model fitted well to the dataset and was free of any violation based on the diagnostic checks conducted.The results show that the government made a right decision in enforcing travelling restriction because we observed that travelling history and contacts made increases the chances of people being infected with CoVID-19 by 85%and 88%respectively.This prediction of CoVID-19 shows that the government should ensure that most travelling agency should have better precautions and preparations in place before re-opening.

Essential oil of Grape Fruit (Citrus paradisi) Peels and Its Antimicrobial Activities

Plants and plant products are continuously being explored in medicine against the increasing number of antibiotic resistant organisms. The antimicrobial activity of essential oil of some plants has been demonstrated against a range of organism. This study aimed to determine the chemical constituents and the antimicrobial effects of the oil of grape peels on some clinical isolates. The oil was obtained from the peels by hydrodistillation procedure and analyzed using Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer. The in-vitro antimicrobial property of the methanolic, ethanolic and tween 80 mixture of extract was determined by agar well diffusion method against selected clinical bacterial isolates (Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, E. coli ATCC 25292, Klebsellia pneumonia, Pseudococcus sp., Salmonella typhmurium, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococus aureus ATCC 29213) and fungal isolates (Aspergillus niger, Candida albican, and Penicillium chrysogenum). The GC-MS analyses of the oil indicated the amount of the essential oil components was highest with D-Limonene (75.05%), followed by β-myrene (7.25%), α-pinene (2.11%), caryophyllene (1.88%), octanal (1.68) and β-phellandrene (1.18%). Some of the minor components included δ-cadinene (0.89%), copaene (0.82%), methyl phthalate (0.54%), linalool (0.48%) and 3-carene (0.21%). The oil extracts exerted different degrees of inhibitory activity against the organisms. The inhibition of the test isolates was dependent on the dissolution solvent used. Methanolic oil mixture inhibited all bacteria and fungi. Ethanol oil mixture inhibited the test bacteria and C. albicans while, the oil extract dissolved in Tween 80 solution showed no inhibitory activity on the test fungi. This study has shown that grape peels from Nigeria contain some antibiotic principles which may be explored for use in the treatment of certain diseases.

ong>Background: ong>Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and it is a public health concern due to the endemic nature of the disease. Nigeria’s health systems still rely heavily on out-dated tuberculosis diagnostic tests;including sputum smear microscopy and chest radiography. This necessitated the urgent need to explore a more reliable, effective method that can rapidly enhance simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and rifampicin (RIF) resistance. ong>Aims: ong>We evaluated the prevalence of MTB and rifampicin resistance and the influence of socio-demographic factors. ong>Methods:ong> A longitudinal, descriptive study that employs the Xpert MTB/RIF automated molecular method for rapid detection of rifampicin resistance. Secondary data were collected from the medical record from March 2017 to December 2018. Primary data were collected by direct clinical observations and analysis with gene expert machine from January 2019-March 2019. ong>Results:ong> Study populations were 1893 subjects pooled as secondary data at the Gene Expert laboratory, with a mean age of 44.92 years and were categorized based on sex, 1125 (59.4%) males and 768 (40.6%) females respectively. The MTB detected were 117 (15.7%) for males while 76 (9.9%) were positive for females. 948 (84.3%) were negative for males and 692 (90.1%) negative for females. Also, the categories for age were grouped into three but the older age groups (29 - 54) and (55 - 80) were more vulnerable to MTB having a p = 0.506 which is statistically non-significant;only 14 (5.5%) have RIF while 239 (94.5%) do not have RIF resistance strains. Logistic regression analysis of MTB detected showed a significant association (p or sex and a non-significant association (p > 0.05) for age. The prevalence rate for RIF Resistance is 5.53%, there is a statistical difference p = 0.001 between RIF Resistance and MTB in Ilorin. ong>Conclusion: ong>The utilization of validated molecular technique for MT

Striga hermonthica(Del.)Benth is ranked as the number one constraint to maize productivity in Eastern Uganda.The use of trap crops is one of the control measures suggested for farmers with limited resources in Striga infested areas.In this study the main focus was on the effectiveness of intercropping in reducing Striga infestation and hence overall land productivity.The major objective was to identify suitable legumes in the control of Striga.In order to achieve this,on-farm experiments were conducted in Tororo and Busia districts of Eastern Uganda where the effect of the legumes on the Striga prevalence was evaluated.Maize(Zea mays)was intercropped with common beans(Phaseolus vulgaris),soybean(Glycine max)and silver leaf desmodium(Desmodium uncinatum)with sole maize(Z.mays)as the control.Soybean,beans and desmodium decreased the infestation of Striga by 26%,40%and 72%,respectively.There was a significant(pof emerged Striga and maize yield attained by desmodium and the rest of the legumes.Desmodium was found to be the most effective of the legumes in the control of Striga.

Detection of Stx2 Gene of Escherichia coliand Elevated Levels of Fecal Bacteria in the Cattle Farming Regions of Lake oconee

The presence of Total coliform, Eschericha coli and enterococci were enumerated in the cattle farming areas of the oconee Watershed using colilertTM and enterolertTM IDEXX plates, respectively. Microbial Source Tracking (MST) using Bacteroidales molecular markers for ruminant (RuBac) and human (HuBac) specific bacterial groups were used to determine the source of the fecal pollution in the watershed. In the cattle farming regions of the watershed higher levels of fecal bacteria were detected compared to the levels of fecal bacteria at the forested and residential sites. MST indicated that the cattle farming regions (except DC2) of the lake was impacted by fecal pollution from a ruminant source such as cattle. In addition, qPCR for the tuf gene of E. coli and the Stx2 gene that is commonly found in enterohemorragic E. coli o157:H7 were used to evaluate the presence of these bacteria in the study area. E. coli o157:H7 (Stx2 gene) was detected only in the beef cattle regions of the watershed. The presences of E. coli and Stx2 gene in the oconee Watershed represent a potential public health risk because Lake oconee and its tributaries are used for recreational activities as well as crop irrigation.
