In recent years,the notion of resilience has been developed and applied in many technical areas,becoming exceptionally pertinent to disaster risk science.during a disaster situation,accurate sensing information is the key to efficient recovery efforts.In general,resilience aims to minimize the impact of disruptions to systems through the fast recovery of critical functionality,but resilient design may require redundancy and could increase costs.In this article,we describe a method based on binary linear programming for sensor network design balancing efficiency with resilience.The application of the developed framework is demonstrated for the case of interior building surveillance utilizing infrared sensors in both twoand three-dimensional spaces.The method provides optimal sensor placement,taking into account critical functionality and a desired level of resilience and considering sensor type and availability.The problem formulation,resilience requirements,and application of the optimization algorithm are described in detail.Analysis of sensor locations with and without resilience requirements shows that resilient configuration requires redundancy in number of sensors and their intelligent placement.Both tasks are successfully solved by the described method,which can be applied to strengthen the resilience of sensor networks by design.The proposed methodology is suitable for large-scale optimization problems with many sensors and extensive coverage areas.

Gas production from multiple coal seams has become common practice in many coal basins around the world. Although gas production rates are typically enhanced, the economic viability of such practice is not well studied. In order to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of multiple coal seams production, reservoir simulation integrated with economics modelling was performed to study the effect of important reservoir properties of the secondary coal seam on production and economic performance using both vertical and horizontal wells. The results demonstrated that multiple seam gas production of using both vertical and horizontal wells have competitive advantage over single layer production under most scenarios. Gas content and permeability of the secondary coal seam are the most important reservoir properties that have impact on the economic feasibility of multiple seam gas production. The comparison of vertical well and horizontal well performance showed that horizontal well is more economically attractive for both single well and gas field. Moreover, wellhead price is the most sensitive to the economic performance, followed by operating costs and government subsidy. Although the results of reservoir simulation combined with economic analysis are subject to assumptions, multiple seam gas production is more likely to maintain profitability compared with single layer production.

Graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))nanosheets have attracted widespread interest in the construction of advanced separation membranes.However,dense stacking and a single functionality have limited the membrane development.Here,an advanced two-/three-dimensional(2d/3d)g-C_(3)N_(4)/TiO_(2)@MnO_(2) membrane is constructed by intercalating 3d TiO_(2)@MnO_(2) nanostructures into g-C_(3)N_(4) nanosheets.The 3d flower-like nanostructures broaden the transport channels of the composite membrane.The membrane can effectively separate five oil-in-water(O/W)emulsions,with a maximum flux of 3265.67±15.01 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1)·bar^(-1) and a maximum efficiency of 99.69%±0.45%for toluene-in-water emulsion(T/W).Meanwhile,the TiO_(2)@MnO_(2) acts as an excellent electron acceptor and provides positive spatial separation of electrons–holes(e^(-)–h^(+)).The formation of 2d/3d heterojunctions allows the material with wider light absorption and smaller bandgap(2.10 eV).These photoelectric properties give the membrane good degradation of three different pollutants,with about 100%degradation for methylene blue(MB)and malachite green(MG).The photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency of the membrane is also about 100%.After cyclic experiment,the membrane maintains its original separation and photocatalytic capabilities.The remarkable multifunctional and self-cleaning properties of the g-C_(3)N_(4) based membrane represent its potential value for complex wastewater treatment.

Hydraulic fracturing and well drilling bring water into shale reservoirs.The water interacts with the shale,which can destabilize the wellbore and impact the rate of gas production from the reservoir.Although wellbore instability has been extensively studied,the effect on gas production requires further work.In this work,the interactions of water with shale from China’s Sichuan Basin were studied from macroscopic and microscopic perspectives.The visual information provided by studying shale at the microscopic scale helps in understanding the effects of water—shale interactions on gas production.We first studied the shale’s wettability and water adsorption capacity and then investigated its water adsorption characteristics,swelling strain,and Young’s modulus with different water contents.Field-emission scanning electron microscopy was also used to observe the storage of water in the shale matrix and the interaction of shale minerals with water.Our experimental data show that the adsorption capacity of the shale is low,although it is overall hydrophilic.The adsorption data indicated that diffusion may be the main mechanism for water adsorption by the sample under our experimental conditions.Capillary pressure may also help transport water into the matrix The shale sample exhibited free swelling and its Young’s modulus decreased after uptake of water,which may be attributed to hydration of clay minerals in the shale sample.Microscopic observations showed that some water remained in the sample’s pores even when the water vapor pressure was much lower than the saturation pressure.This suggests that the residual water may be difficult to remove from the reservoir and that hydraulic fluid would have a greater influence on smaller pores than on larger pores.

Understanding gas storage and transport mechanisms in shale is crucial for reservoir evaluation and gas production forecast.The shale matrix has a complex pore structure,with sizes ranging from nanometres to micrometres.Although diffusion plays a significant role in shale gas transport in the reservoir,systematic studies of gas diffusion in shale are rare.This paper studied the methane diffusion behaviour of shale based on pore structure,as well as the effects of sample particle size and water on gas adsorption and diffusion.The combined N adsorption and SEM experimental results showed that the shale sample had a bimodal pore size distribution.The diffusion data were able to be described adequately by the bidisperse model,and the parameters were consistent with pore size distribution results obtained from the N adsorption and SEM results.It was found that both Fickian diffusion and Knudsen diffusion play important roles in shale gas diffusion and they show different gas pressure dependence.Adsorption isotherm and calculated diffusivity showed little particle size dependence.However,gas adsorption and diffusivity were significantly reduced in moist samples,showing that water reduces gas storage capacity and transport rate in shale.

BACKGROUNd Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)eradication rates have fallen globally,likely in large part due to increasing antibiotic resistance to traditional therapy.In areas of high clarithromycin and metronidazole resistance such as ours,Maastricht VI guidelines suggest high dose amoxicillin dual therapy(HdAdT)can be considered,subject to evidence for local efficacy.In this study we assess efficacy of HdAdT therapy for H.pylori eradication in an Irish cohort.AIM To assess the efficacy of HdAdT therapy for H.pylori eradication in an Irish cohort as both first line,and subsequent therapy for patients diagnosed with H.pylori.METHOdS All patients testing positive for H.pylori in a tertiary centre were treated prospectively with HdAdT(amoxicillin 1 g tid and esomeprazole 40 mg bid×14 d)over a period of 8 months.Eradication was confirmed with Urea Breath Test at least 4 wk after cessation of therapy.A delta-over-baseline>4%was considered positive.Patient demographics and treatment outcomes were recorded,analysed and controlled for basic demographics and prior H.pylori treatment.RESULTS One hundred and ninety-eight patients were identified with H.pylori infection,10 patients were excluded due to penicillin allergy and 38 patients refused follow up testing.In all 139 were included in the analysis,55%(n=76)were female,mean age was 46.6 years.Overall,93(67%)of patients were treatment-naïve and 46(33%)had received at least one previous course of treatment.The groups were statistically similar.Self-reported compliance with HdAdT was 97%,mild side-effects occurred in 7%.There were no serious adverse drug reactions.Overall the eradication rate for our cohort was 56%(78/139).Eradication rates were worse for those with previous treatment[43%(20/46)vs 62%(58/93),P=0.0458,odds ratio=2.15].Age and Gender had no effect on eradication status.CONCLUSION Overall eradication rates with HdAdT were disappointing.despite being a simple and possibly better tolerated regime,these results do not support its routine use in a high dual resistanc

Alzheimer’s disease(Ad)is progressive and ultimately fatal,with current drugs failing to reverse and cure it.This study aimed to find plant species which may provide therapeutic bioactivities targeted to causal agents proposed to be driving Ad.A novel toolkit methodology was employed,whereby clinical symptoms were translated into categories recognized in ethnomedicine.These categories were applied to find plant species with therapeutic effects,mined from ethnomedical surveys.Survey locations were mapped to assess how this data is at risk.Bioactivities were found of therapeutic relevance to 15 hypothesised causal bases for Ad.107 species with an ethnological report of memory improvement demonstrated therapeutic activity for all these 15 causal bases.The majority of the surveys were found to reside within biodiversity hotspots(centres of high biodiversity under threat),with loss of traditional knowledge the most common threat.Our findings suggest that the documented plants provide a large resource of Ad thera-peutic potential.In demonstrating bioactivities targeted to these causal bases,such plants may have the capacity to reduce or reverse Ad,with promise as drug leads to target multiple Ad hallmarks.However,there is a need to preserve ethnomedical knowledge,and the habitats on which this knowledge depends.

decades of advancements in immuno-oncology have enabled the development of current immunotherapies,which provide longterm treatment responses in certain metastatic cancer patients.However,cures remain infrequent,and most patients ultimately succumb to treatment-refractory metastatic disease.Recent insights suggest that tumors at certain organ sites exhibit distinctive response patterns to immunotherapy and can even reduce antitumor immunity within anatomically distant tumors,suggesting the activation of tissue-specific immune tolerogenic mechanisms in some cases of therapy resistance.Specialized immune cells known as regulatory T cells(Tregs)are present within all tissues in the body and coordinate the suppression of excessive immune activation to curb autoimmunity and maintain immune homeostasis.despite the high volume of research on Tregs,the findings have failed to reconcile tissue-specific Treg functions in organs,such as tolerance,tissue repair,and regeneration,with their suppression of local and systemic tumor immunity in the context of immunotherapy resistance.To improve the understanding of how the tissue-specific functions of Tregs impact cancer immunotherapy,we review the specialized role of Tregs in clinically common and challenging organ sites of cancer metastasis,highlight research that describes Treg impacts on tissue-specific and systemic immune regulation in the context of immunotherapy,and summarize ongoing work reporting clinically feasible strategies that combine the specific targeting of Tregs with systemic cancer immunotherapy.Improved knowledge of Tregs in the framework of their tissue-specific biology and clinical sites of organ metastasis will enable more precise targeting of immunotherapy and have profound implications for treating patients with metastatic cancer.

Rational design of oral drugs targeting mucosa delivery with gut organoid platforms

Effective oral drugs and vaccines require high delivery efficiency across the gastrointestinal epithelia and protection of medically effective payloads(i.e.,immunogens)against gastric damage.In this study,hollowed nanocarriers(NCs:silica nanospheres and gold nanocages)with poly-l-lysine(PLL)coating and mammalian orthoreovirus cell attachment proteinσ1 functionalization(NC-PLL-σ1)were explored as functional oral drug delivery vehicles(OddVs).The transport of these OddVs to mucosal lymphoid tissues could be facilitated by microfold cells(M-cells)mediated transcytosis(viaσ1-α2–3-linked sialic acids adherence)across gastrointestinal epithelia.PLL coating provided protection and slow-release of rhodamine 6 G(R6G),a model payload.The transport effectiveness of these OddVs was tested on intestinal organoid monolayers in vitro.When compared with other experimental groups,the fully functionalized OddV system(with PLL-σ1)demonstrated two significant advantages:a significantly higher transport efficiency(198%over blank control at 48 h);and protection of payloads which led to both better transport efficiency and extended-release of payloads(61%over uncoated carriers at 48 h).In addition,it was shown that the M cell presence in intestinal organoid monolayers(modulated by Rank L stimulation)was a determining factor on the transport efficiency of the OddVs:more M-cells(induced by higher Rank L)in the organoid monolayers led to higher transport efficiency for OddV-delivered model payload(R6G).The fully functionalized OddVs showed great potential as effective oral delivery vehicles for drugs and vaccines.
