Controlling calcium and phosphate ion release of 3D printed bioactive ceramic scaffolds: An in vitro study

This paper characterizes in an in vitro setting the release of calcium (Ca) and phosphate (PO4) of 3D printed bioactive ceramic scaffold prepared from extrudable paste containing hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).Hydroxyapatite and β-TCP were calcined at 800℃ for 11 h,fabricated into four experimental groups (100％ HA,100％ β-TCP,15％/85％ HA/β-TCP,and 15％/85％ HA/β-TCP (design)),sintered to 1100 ℃ for 4 *** and phosphorus concentrations were evaluated using ICP spectroscopy,and the release of Ca and PO4 ions during dissolution of the CaP-based scaffolds was measured by submerging in 0.05 mol/L Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-HC1 and maintaining a temperature of 37 ℃.The Ca and PO4 concentrations of the solutions were measured with the utilization of a calcium assay kit and a phosphate assay kit and read in a UV-visible *** 100％ HA scaffold group showed the greatest concentration of Ca ions (～1.9 mg/dL),but ultimately released at a lower amount as time increased;the 100％ HA scaffold also showed the lowest total amount of calcium ions released over the course of *** results for the 100％ β-TCP were on the opposite of the HA with the highest amount of calcium ion release over the *** the PO4 ion release showed a similar trend as those observed with Ca ions with an apparent difference in the 100％ HA scaffold *** was nearly 0 mg/dL of the phosphate ions released in the first 24 h,in comparison to the amount of Ca ions released during the same time *** various formulations can lead to different properties of these bioactive ceramic scaffolds,it is important to understand how the tailoring of this important biphasic material can impact the long-term outcome of an ever-important in vivo clinical trial in the future.

The quantity of sand fraction sediment in reservoirs as the basis of an assessment of the bedload transport from a reservoir catchment

A knowledge of the quantity of the sand fraction in the sediments deposited in reservoirs makes it easier to determine the bedload transport, which is a rarely measured parameter. The current study discusses the results of investigations into the siltation and physical properties of sediment in two small reservoirs located in the southeastern part of Poland. Also, the quantity of the bedload sand fraction was *** estimation of the reservoir capacity loss after t years of operation was based on hydroacoustic measurements. The sediment density, organic matter content, and granulometric composition were evaluated by means of investigations and analyses of bottom sediment core samples. The interpolation of the parameters describing the sediment properties was done using the Kriging method. The analyses indicate that 10.80 thousand m3of sediment were deposited into the Zalew Kielecki Reservoir in the years 2004-2015. Their overall mass was 7320 t, of which sand fraction sediments constituted 39.7%.Between the years 2004 and 2014, the Umer Reservoir retained 11.79 thousand m3of sediment having a mass of 7200 t, of which sand fraction constituted 34.6%.

This study aims to determine the relationships between local meteorological conditions,proglacial river discharge and biogeochemical processes operating in a periglacial basin located in the Polar Ural mountain range, Russia. Fieldwork was conducted in the catchment of Obruchev Glacier(13 km2) during the summer peak flow period in 2008. River discharge was dominated by snowmelt and changed from 3300 l s-1 to less than 1000 l s-1. The mean daily air temperatures of stations situated in the mountain tundra and near Obruchev Glacier from July 11 th to August 1st 2008 were 14.4°C and 10.3°C, respectively. The glacial river had low total dissolved solids varying from 4.5 to 9 mg l-1 and coefficients of correlation between Na+ and Cl-, K+ and Cl-, as well as NH4+ and Cl- were 0.94, 0.90 and 0.84, respectively. Rainfall events affected the snowmelt initiation and provided an essential part of the discharge during the intense snowmelt period, which occurred from July 11 th to July 18 th 2008. Data showed that Na+ and K+ in the surface water derived from snowmelt rather than chemical weathering of silicates. Also, it was obtained that NO3- derived from the melting snowpack, whereas ammonification occurring under the snowpacks was the primary source for NH4+.

The treatment of Parkinson's disease with deep brain stimulation: current issues

Deep brain stimulation has become a well-established symptomatic treatment for Parkinson＇s disease during the last 25 years. Besides improving motor symptoms and long-term motor complications, positive effects on patients＇ mobility, activities of daily living, emotional well-being and health-related quality of life have been recognized. Apart from that, numerous clinical trials analyzed effects on non-motor symptoms and side effects of deep brain stimulation. Several technical issues and stimulation paradigms have been and are still being developed to optimize the therapeutic effects, minimize the side effects and facilitate handling. This review summarizes current therapeutic issues, i.e., patient and target selection, surgical procedure and programming paradigms. In addition it focuses on neuropsychological effects and side effects of deep brain stimulation.

Genetic distinctness of parthenogenetic forms of European Polydrusus weevils of the subgenus Scythodrusus

Among eight species of Polydrusus weevils which belong to subgenus Scythodrusus, at least two possess parthenogenetic forms： P （S.） inustus and P （S.）pilifer. Both of these species consist of dioecious populations in the Caspian area and of parthenogenetic populations in Eastern Europe （R （S.） inustus）, the Caucasus region （both species） and Middle Asia （P （S.）pilifer）. The origin of parthenogenesis in this subgenus is unresolved; however some data suggest that the parthenogenetic forms are of hybrid ancestry. The genetic distinctness of parthenogenetic Scythodrusus was assessed on the basis of COII, ITS2, EFI-a and Wolbachia wsp, 16S ribosomal DNA, ftsZ and hcpA sequence comparisons. Both taxa turned out to be monophyletic for all markers, which is an evidence against hybridization of their dioecious ancestors. On the other hand, a high frequency of heterozygous P （S.） inustus females suggests an origin resulting from hybridization between genetically distinct dioecious representatives of this species. Very similar strains of Wolbachia supergroup A were found in both species, indicating that they have been either inherited from a common ancestor or were transmitted between parthenogenetic Scythodrusus weevils and probably spread randomly across their ranges.

Culturomics and metagenomics: In understanding of environmental resistome

Pharmaceutical residues, mainly antibiotics, have been called "emerging contaminants" in the environment because of their increasing frequency of detection in aquatic and terrestrial systems and their sublethal ecological effects. Most of them are undiscovered. Both human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, are introduced into the environment via many different routes, including discharges from municipal wastewater treatment plants and land application of animal manure and biosolids to fertilize croplands. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the widespread problem of antibiotic resistance, modem and scientific approaches have been developed to gain knowledge of the entire antibiotic-resistant microbiota of various ecosystems, which is called the resistome. In this review, two omics methods, i.e. culturomics, a new approach, and metagenomics, used to study antibiotic resistance in environmental samples, are described. Moreover, we discuss how both omics methods have become core scientific tools to characterize microbiomes or resistomes, study natural communities and discover new microbes and new antibiotic resistance genes from environments. The combination of the method for get better outcome of both culturomics and metagenomics will significantly advance our understanding of the role of microbes and their specific properties in the environment.

Repurposing a deep learning network to filter and classify volunteered photographs for land cover and land use characterization

This paper extends recent research into the usefulness of volunteered photos for land cover extraction,and investigates whether this usefulness can be automatically assessed by an easily accessible,off-the-shelf neural network pre-trained on a variety of scene *** photographs are sometimes presented to volunteers as part of a game which requires them to extract relevant facts about land *** challenge is to select the most relevant photographs in order to most efficiently extract the useful information while maintaining the engagement and interests of *** repurposing an existing network which had been trained on an extensive library of potentially relevant features,we can quickly carry out initial assessments of the general value of this approach,pick out especially salient features,and identify focus areas for future neural network training and *** compare two approaches to extract land cover information from the network:a simple post hoc weighting approach accessible to non-technical audiences and a more complex decision tree approach that involves training on domain-specific features of *** approaches had reasonable success in characterizing human influence within a scene when identifying the land use types(as classified by Urban Atlas)present within a buffer around the photograph’s *** work identifies important limitations and opportunities for using volunteered photographs as follows:(1)the false precision of a photograph’s location is less useful for identifying on-the-spot land cover than the information it can give on neighbouring combinations of land cover;(2)groundacquired photographs,interpreted by a neural network,can supplement plan view imagery by identifying features which will never be discernible from above;(3)when dealing with contexts where there are very few exemplars of particular classes,an independent a posteriori weighting of existing scene attributes and categories can buffer

Bionic inspiration from human thumb and index finger was the drive to design a high-performance two-finger dexterous *** size of each phalanx and the motion range of each joint in the human thumb and index finger were summarized,and the features of three grasping patterns were described in ***,a two-finger dexterous bionic hand with 6 Degrees of Freedom(DoFs)was *** the mechanical thumb and index finger were made up of three rigid phalanx links and three mechanical rotation *** grasp-release tests validated that the bionic hand can perform three grasping patterns:power grasp,precision pinch and lateral *** grasping success rates were high under the following cases:(1)when power grasping was used to grasp a ring with external diameter 20 mm-140 mm,a cylinder with mass<500 g,or objects with cylinder,sphere or ellipsoid shape;(2)when the precision pinch was used to grasp thin or small objects;(3)when the lateral pinch was used to grasp low length-to-width ratio of *** work provided a method for developing two-fimger bionic hand with three grasping patterns,and further revealed the linkage between the difference in fimger structure and size and the hand manipulation dexterity.
