Populus is an important tree genus frequently cultivated for economical ***,the high sensitivity of poplars towards water deficit,drought,and salt accumulation significantly affects plant productivity and limits biomass *** cultivation and abiotic stress conditions have been described to significantly induce the formation of apoplastic barriers(Casparian bands and suberin lamellae)in roots of different monocotyledonous crop ***,this study aimed to investigate to which degree the roots of the dicotyledonous gray poplar(Populus×canescens)react to a set of selected cultivation conditions(hydroponics,aeroponics,or soil)and abiotic stress treatments(abscisic acid,oxygen deficiency)because a differing stress response could potentially help in explaining the observed higher stress *** apoplastic barriers of poplar roots cultivated in different environments were analyzed by means of histochemistry and gas chromatography and compared to the available literature on monocotyledonous crop ***,dicotyledonous poplar roots showed only a remarkably low induction or enhancement of apoplastic barriers in response to the different cultivation conditions and abiotic stress *** genetic optimization(e.g.,overexpression of biosynthesis key genes)of the apoplastic barrier development in poplar roots might result in more stress-tolerant cultivars in the future.

This paper discusses the reduction of background noise in an industrial environment to extend *** the Industry 4.0 era,the mass development of voice control(speech recognition)in various industrial applications is possible,especially as related to augmented reality(such as hands-free control via voice commands).As Industry 4.0 relies heavily on radiofrequency technologies,some brief insight into this problem is provided,including the Internet of things(IoT)and 5g *** study was carried out in cooperation with the industrial partner Brose CZ spol.s.r.o.,where sound recordings were made to produce a *** experimental environment comprised three workplaces with background noise above 100 dB,consisting of a laser/magnetic welder and a press.A virtual device was developed from a given dataset in order to test selected commands from a commercial speech recognizer from *** tested a hybrid algorithm for noise reduction and its impact on voice command recognition *** virtual devices,the study was carried out on large speakers with 20 participants(10 men and 10 women).The experiments included a large number of repetitions(100 times for each command under different noise conditions).Statistical results confirmed the efficiency of the tested *** welding environment efficiency was 27%before applied filtering,76%using the least mean square(LmS)algorithm,and 79%using LmS+independent component analysis(ICA).magnetic welding environment efficiency was 24%before applied filtering,70%with LmS,and 75%with LmS+*** workplace environment efficiency showed no success before applied filtering,was 52%with LmS,and was 54%with LmS+ICA.

Cardiopulmonary Response to exercise at High Altitude in Adolescents with Congenital Heart Disease

Objective:To extend our knowledge on tolerance of acute high-altitude exposure and hemodynamic response to exercise in adolescents with congenital heart disease(AscCHD)without meaningful clinical or functional ***:A symptom limited cardiopulmonary exercise stress test and a non-invasive cardiac output measurement during steady state exercise were performed at 540 m and at 3454 m *** of acute mountain sickness were ***:We recruited 21 healthy controls and 16 AscCHD(59%male,mean age 14.7±1.1 years).Three subjects(2 controls,1 AscCHD)presented light symptoms of acute mountain sickness(dizziness and headache).During the symptom limited exercise test at lowland,control subjects showed a significantly higher power to weight index(3.5±0.6 W/kg vs.3.0±0.7 W/kg,peart rate(188.8±10.41/min vs.179.4±13.11/min,pentilation(92.8±22.9 l/min vs.75.4±18.6 l/min,e,power to weight index only remained significantly higher in the control group(2.8±0.6 W/kg vs.2.6±0.6 W/kg,pmonary blood flow(PBF)at lowland showed no difference between the control and the AscCHD group,neither at rest(5.4±0.8 l/min vs.5.1±0.9 l/min,p=0.308),nor during the steady state test(10.6±2.4 l/min vs.10.5±2.0 l/min,p=0.825).At high altitude,PBF increased by 110%and 112%,respectively(12.8±2.32 l/min vs.12.5±3.0 l/min;intergroup difference:p=0.986).Conclusions:High altitude exposure was well tolerated in an unselected group of *** significant difference in the cardio-pulmonary adaptation to a control group was noted during a steady state *** of minor acute mountain sickness did occur,which should however not be misinterpreted as signs of hemodynamic maladaptation.

Decline of semen quality during IVF is not associated with subjective male stress

The aim of the present study was to assess if semen quality declines during in vitro fertilization （IVF） and whether or not this phenomenon is triggered by chronic male stress. In order to test this hypothesis, we first investigated a retrospective cohort of 155 male IVF patients （testing cohort）. Subsequently, we started a prospective cohort study in men undergoing their first IVF and assessed semen quality and subjective male chronic stress using a validated tool, i.e. the Fertility Problem Inventory （FPI） questionnaire. The association between stress and sperm quality decline measured 4-6weeks before the start of IVF （T1） and at the day of oocyte retrieval （T2） was the primary outcome. Live birth rate, first trimester abortion and rate of poor responders were secondary outcomes. In the testing cohort, mean progressive motility, but not mean sperm density significantly declined. There were 78/154 （51%） men who showed a decline in semen density and 50/154 （32%） men who showed a decline in progressive motility. In the validation cohort, progressive motility declined, whereas, sperm density increased from T1 to T2. Of 78 men, 27 men had increased stress （FPI-score 〉 146）. Sperm density and progressive motility were not significantly different in men with and without stress. However, in the presence of male stress, couples had a higher rate of poor responders, miscarriages and a lower rate of live births. Subjective stress is not associated with a decline in semen quality observed during IVF but may be associated with adverse ore^nancv outcome.

Addition of biochar produced through thermal decomposition of biomass has been seen as a strategy to improve soils and to sequester carbon （C）, but wide scale implementation of the technology requires to devise innovative profitable solutions. To develop biochar utilisation with an integrated system approach, an innovative program was implemented in 2012 on a 53-ha farm in Western Australia to determine the costs and benefits of integrating biochar with animal husbandry and improvement of pastures. Biochar was mixed with molasses and fed directly to cows. The dung-biochar mixture was incorporated into the soft profile by dung beetles. We studied the changes in soil properties over 3 years. Biochar extracted from fresh dung and from the soil to a depth of 40 cm was characterised. A preliminary financial analysis of the costs and benefits of this integrated approach was also undertaken. The preliminary investigation results suggested that this strategy was effective in improving soil properties and increasing returns to the farmer. It was also concluded that the biochar adsorbed nutrients from the cow＇s gut and from the dung. Dung beetles could transport this nutrient-rich biochar into the soil profile. There was little evidence that the recalcitrant component of the biochar was reduced through reactions inside the gut or on/in the soil. Further research is required to quantify the long-term impact of integrating biochar and dung beetles into the rearing of cows.

The structural phase transition in Ta-NiSes has been envisioned as driven by the formation of an excitonic insulating ***,the role of structural and electronic instabilities on crystal symmetry breaking has yet to be ***,the phase transition in its complementary material Ta_(2)NiS_(5)does not show any experimental hints of an excitonic insulating *** present a microscopic investigation of the electronic and phononic effects involved in the structural phase transition in Ta_(2)NiSe_(5)and Ta-Niss using extensive first-principles *** both materials the crystal symmetries are broken by phonon instabilities,which in tum lead to changes in the electronic bandstructure also observed in the experiment.A total energy landscape analysis shows no tendency towards a purely electronic instability and we find that a sizeable lattice distortion is needed to open a *** conclude that an excitonic instability is not needed to explain the phase transition in both Ta_(2)NiSe_(5)and Ta_(2)NiS_(5).

Acorn squash(Cucurbita pepo)is an iconic fall vegetable in the United States,known for its unique fruit shape and also prized for its culinary *** is known about the metabolism that underlies the development of fruit quality attributes such as color,sweetness,texture and nutritional qualities in acorn squash,or any other winter squash grown *** provide insight into winter squash fruit and seed development and add to the genomic resources in the Cucurbita genus,RNA sequencing was used to generate an acorn squash fruit and seed transcriptome from the cultivar Sweet ReBA at critical points throughout fruit development.141838600 high-quality paired-end Illumina reads were assembled into 55949 unigenes.85%of unigenes with predicted open reading frames had homology with previously identified genes and over 62%could be functionally *** with the watermelon and cucumber genomes provided confirmation that the unigenes are full-length and comprehensive,covering an average of 90%of the coding sequence of their homologs and 72%of the cucumber and watermelon *** candidate genes associated with carotenoid and carbohydrate metabolism were identified toward a resource for winter squash fruit quality trait *** transcriptome represents a major advance in *** genomics,providing significant new sequence information and revealing the repertoire of genes expressed throughout winter squash fruit and seed *** studies on the genetic basis of fruit quality and future breeding efforts will be enhanced by tools and insights developed from this resource.

Both the fruit mesocarp and the seeds of winter squash can be used for consumption,although the focus of breeding efforts varies by *** bred for fruit consumption are selected for fruit mesocarp quality traits such as carotenoid content,percent dry matter,and percent soluble solids,while these traits are essentially ignored in oilseed *** compare fruit development in these two types of squash,we sequenced the fruit transcriptome of two cultivars bred for different purposes:an acorn squash,‘Sweet ReBA’,and an oilseed pumpkin,‘Lady godiva’.Putative metabolic pathways were developed for carotenoid,starch,and sucrose synthesis in winter squash fruit and squash homologs were identified for each of the structural genes in the *** expression,especially of known rate-limiting and branch point genes,corresponded with metabolite accumulation both across development and between the two ***,developmental regulation of metabolite genes is an important factor in winter squash fruit quality.
