Effects of spatial and temporal weather data resolutions on streamflow modeling of a semi-arid basin,Northeast Brazil

One major difficulty in the application of distributed hydrological models is the availability of data with sufficient quantity and quality to perform an adequate evaluation of a watershed and to capture its *** Soil&Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was used in this study to analyze the hydrologic responses to different sources,spatial scales,and temporal resolutions of weather inputs for the semi-arid Jaguaribe watershed(73000 km2)in northeastern *** different simulations were conducted,based on four groups of weather and precipitation inputs:Group 1-SWAT Weather Generator based on monthly data from four airport weather stations and daily data based on 124 local rain gauges;Group 2-daily local data from 14 weather stations and 124 precipitation gauges;Group 3-Daily values from a global coupled forecast model(NOAA’s Climate Forecast System Reanalysis-CFSR);and Group 4-CFSR data with 124 local precipitation *** four simulations were evaluated using multiple statistical efficiency metrics for four streamflow gauges,using:Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient(NSE),determination coefficient(R2),the ratio of the root mean square to the standard deviation of the observed data(RSR),and the percent bias(PBIAS).The Group 4 simulation performed best overall(provided the best statistical values)with results ranked as“good”or“very good”on all four efficiency metrics suggesting that using CFSR data for weather parameters other than precipitation,coupled with precipitation data from local rain gauges,can provide reasonable hydrologic *** second best results were obtained with Group 1,which provided“good”results in three of four efficiency *** 2 performed worse overall than Groups 1 and 4,probably due to uncertainty related to daily measures and a large percentage of missing *** 2 and 3 were“unsatisfactory”according to three or four of the efficiency metrics,indicating that the choice of weather data is very important.

The EFVM （Vitoria Minas Railroad） is one of the main railways in Brazil. It transports freight trains of ore, 220 wagons each. These wagons have 2 boogies of 2 axles each and 32 metric tons on metre gauge. Elastic strains were measured on a special part of this railway due to these trains. The main load to evaluate stresses and strains was a G 16 Locomotive, a C-C kind from Vale, a Brazilian Company. The measurements were obtained by dynamic deflectometer installed on a main line of this railway, near Ipatinga, a city from Minas Gerais, one of Brazil states. This track was equipped to obtain stresses under an equal repeated static load A simulation of the stresses was made under critical strain by Ferrovia 1.0 software. It was also made an evaluation of unequal results from neighbor sleepers taking in comparison two equipped parts of this railway, one with compacted ballast and no compaction to the other. The results were strain limited, avoiding breakage or damage to the studied rails. This work analyses these measurements focusing on the improvement of track quality.

In the genus Quercus, regeneration by seed is reduced or absent in many species. The naturally protected area of the Sierra Fria, in Aguascalientes, Mexico contains forests that are fragmented and have been degraded due to human activities. The oak populations in this region demonstrate a very restricted sexual regeneration, with five of the most abundant species of this genus: Quercuseduardii, Q. grisea, Q. potosina, Q. resinosa and Q. sideroxyla presenting low seedling recruitment. In this study we evaluated seed viability and the effect of seed size on the germination, growth and survival of the trees, with the aim of recommending restoration and conservation program management actions for these oak species. In 2005 and 2006, 5000 acorns of each species were collected and viability, germination and growth experiments were performed in the laboratory and greenhouse. Meat quality in “in door” and “out door” production systems of poultry and swine

The meat quality can be influenced by many interacting factors before and after the slaughter. Currently more sustainable production systems are targeted in general, whether or not they have any effect on meat quality. The sustainability is a condition of agroecology and necessarily im- plies on the animal and plant association and succession. A condition for sustainability is to minimize or even eliminate the use of inputs from processes of chemical synthesis. In the case of pigs and poultry, this is feasible by adopting production systems that allows nutria- ents recycle directly on the soil at levels that do not involve pollution. Although we have the understanding that the general principles of sustainability to be observed are universal, the solution is not simple. For each situation a vi- able alternative must be sought, depending on the social, economic, ecological and cultural realities. In tropical and subtropical climates the production of pigs and poultry outdoors can be an appropriate option. This also leads to nutria- ents recycle and promotes a better energy bal- ance of the system. Among the alternatives that can be taken to introduce differentiating factors in meat production as food is the type of pro- duction system, due to its direct impact on the meat quality. These systems have a direct in- fluence through the consumed food, by the conditions of animal wellbeing, physical activity and the environment provided. The performance and meat quality depend on the interaction of genotypes, rearing conditions, pre-slaughter handling and processing of the meat and the carcass. The influence of the rearing system on the animal performance, on the carcass and finally on the meat is the result of the interactive effects among facilities, feeding level and ge-notype used in the production systems. Data Mining of Spatio-Temporal Variability of Chlorophyll-a Concentrations in a Portion of the Western Atlantic with Low Performance Hardware

The contemporary scientific literature that deals with the dynamics of marine chlorophyll-a concentration is already customarily employing data mining techniques in small geographic areas or regional samples. However, there is little focus on the issue of missing data related to chlorophyll-a concentration estimated by remote sensors. Intending to provide greater scope to the identification of the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of marine chlorophyll-a concentrations, and to improve the reliability of results, this study presents a data mining approach to cluster similar chlorophyll-a concentration behaviors while implementing an iterative spatiotemporal interpolation technique for missing data inference. Although some dynamic behaviors of said concentrations in specific areas are already known by specialists, systematic studies in large geographical areas are still scarce due to the computational complexity involved. For this reason, this study analyzed 18 years of NASA satellite observations in one portion of the Western Atlantic Ocean, totaling more than 60 million records. Additionally, performance tests were carried out in low-cost computer systems to check the accessibility of the proposal implemented for use in computational structures of different sizes. The approach was able to identify patterns with high spatial resolution, accuracy and reliability, rendered in low-cost computers even with large volumes of data, generating new and consistent patterns of spatiotemporal variability. Thus, it opens up new possibilities for data mining research on a global scale in this field of application.

Occurrence of Nanobacteria-Like Particles in Renal Stones of a Southern Brazilian Population

Purpose: Identifying the source of stone formation in recurrent stone formers has always been a big problem. Material and Methods: In this study kidney stones from 52 patients were submitted to direct examination by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after manual fracture and 27 calculi were cultured in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium (E-MEM) and Brain-Heart Infusion (BHI) for eight weeks at 37°C in 5% CO2 atmosphere. Twenty-seven powdered and demineralized stones were suspended in sterile PBS, filtered through 0.22 m-pore-size sterile filters Millex (Millipore, Massachusetts, USA) and submitted to DNA extraction (Quiagen-Brazil). Platinum PCR SuperMIX (GIBCO-BRL), primers (Invitrogen), and Ultra Pure Water (Advanced Biotechnologies, Columbia, MD) were used for PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), which was generally conducted for 30 or 35 cycles with annealing of primers for 40 sec at 55°C and extension for 1 min at 72°C. Results: In 36 out 52 (69%) kidney stones it was detected the presence of biofilm coating the mineral surface of the stone when examined by SEM, consisting of coccoid particles, isolated or clustered, with diameter of 500 nm or less. Eleven out 27 (41%) kidney stone cultures produced white-colored sediment on the bottom of the tubes after eight-week incubation, revealing tiny structures similar to those observed directly by SEM. These structures were similar in size and morphology to spherical apatite particles previously observed in human kidney stones and named as nanobacteria (NB). No PCR products were observed in the samples. Conclusion: We found a strong correlation between renal stones and calcifying nanoparticles (CNP) in this study and these results open a new insight on this area to explore the etiology of stone formation. Whether NB/CNP are truly microorganisms or self-propagating mineral compounds is still controversial and its contribution, if any, in apatite nucleation and crystal growth remains uncertain.

Effects of Copaiba Oil on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Teratogenesis in Mice

Cyclophosphamide is an anti-neoplastic chemotherapy drug which, when administered to animals during the gestational period, provokes visceral, skeletal and external malformations. Copaiba oil obtained from Copaifera L. genus is traditionally used in popular medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. However, the effect of copaiba oil onteratogenesis remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible protector effects of copaiba oil on the model of teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in mice. Pregnant female Swiss mice were divided into 8 groups (n = 15). Three groups received copaiba oil, via gavage, in the following doses: 0.3 mL·Kg-1, 0.6 mL·Kg-1 and 0.9 mL·Kg-1 (b.w.), associated to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), intraperitoneal (i.p.). The negative control group received medium chain triglyceride (MCT) and PBS. The positive control group received cyclophosphamide (30 mg·Kg-1 (b.w.)) and MCT. The three treatment groups called associated groups (A) received one of the doses of copaiba oil, via gavage and an associated dose of cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally. Copaiba oil presented a protective effect against teratogenesis induced by cyclophosphamide in the following skeletal structures: metacarpals, forepaws proximal phalanges, and tail vertebras. It also reduced the hydrocephalus frequency. These data suggest that copaiba oil could be a potential candidate for an anti-teratogenic agent.

Control of a Rigid-Flexible Satellite Solar Panel with Non-collocated Sensor/Actuator

This paper presents a model and analysis for a flexible link with non-collocations of sensors and actuators. It shows the changes in the system dynamics and the appearance of zeroes in the right-plan complex, turning the system a non-minimum phase system. The performance of the PID （proportional-integral-derivative） and LQR （linear quadratic regulator） controller are discussed considering the zero dynamics of the system in three points of special interest：（I） the collocated case, when the sensor is in the base of the link; （2） the critical case, where the system starts to present zeroes in the right-plan complex and （3） the limit case, when the sensors are in the end point of the flexible link. Investigation for a simple rigid-flexible model with one mode, in the three cases, the PID and LQR controller performance are damage. To deal with this kind of problem, new control techniques should be developed.

Massive Thromboembolism from an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm after Successful Thrombolysis for an Acute Myocardial Infarction

Thrombolytic therapy is indicated to the treatment of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction or pulmonary embolism. Its indication should especially consider the risk of bleeding, but other complications might pose harm to patients. Although rarely reported, fibrinolysis can trigger thromboembolic phenomena from emboligenic sources such as aortic aneurysms. Clinicians should be aware of this life-threatening complication. In this case report, we present one patient admitted due to a ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction successfully treated with fibrinolytic treatment, but who evolved with a massive microembolism from an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Despite intensive medical care, the patient evolved with multiorganic failure due to distal microembolism to the guts and lower limbs, severe rhabdomyolysis and ultimately to death. In this challenging case, clinical, anatomical and histopathologic features are presented and discussed.
