Introduction: Spontaneous abortion is defined as pregnancy loss before the twentieth week and Recurrent Spontaneous Abortion (RSA) is defined as at least three spontaneous and successive pregnancy losses in the same period. Among the different types of immunological causes, this study refers specifically to the alloimmune cause. Women with RSA of alloimmune cause share a greater number of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) with their husbands, leading to the inhibition of the production of anti-paternal asymmetric blocking antibodies, which would protect embryonic cells. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of immunotherapy with paternal HLA-sensitizing mononuclear cells in cases of RSA through the positivity of the cross-match test and its efficacy in pregnancy success. Patients and Methods: Written consent was obtained, 12 couples with a history of RSA presenting negative cross-match were included in the study. Blood samples were collected from the couple for cross-matching and the separation of paternal mononuclear cells. Immunotherapy was performed with paternal mononuclear cells intradermally in the wives’ arms on day (D) 0, D15 and D30. After the third dose, a second evaluation of the cross- match tests was performed. Results and Discussion: The age of the wives ranged from 28 to 41 years, with a mean of 34.5 years. The twelve couples had a negative cross-match test (100%). Eleven couples (96.6%) tested positive in the cross- match test after immunotherapy. Of these, 10 (90.9%) had successful pregnancies. Immunotherapy with paternal mononuclear cells showed an excellent ability to sensitize the maternal immune system, with positive cross-match, resulting in a successful pregnancy.

In recent years,as newer technologies have evolved around the healthcare ecosystem,more and more data have been generated.Advanced analytics could power the data collected from numerous sources,both from healthcare institutions,or generated by individuals themselves via apps and devices,and lead to innovations in treatment and diagnosis of diseases;improve the care given to the patient;and empower citizens to participate in the decision-making process regarding their own health and well-being.However,the sensitive nature of the health data prohibits healthcare organizations from sharing the data.The Personal Health Train(PHT)is a novel approach,aiming to establish a distributed data analytics infrastructure enabling the(re)use of distributed healthcare data,while data owners stay in control of their own data.The main principle of the PHT is that data remain in their original location,and analytical tasks visit data sources and execute the tasks.The PHT provides a distributed,flexible approach to use data in a network of participants,incorporating the FAIR principles.It facilitates the responsible use of sensitive and/or personal data by adopting international principles and regulations.This paper presents the concepts and main components of the PHT and demonstrates how it complies with FAIR principles.

Objective: To evaluate the acaricidal activity of the essential oil obtained from roots of Derris floribunda(D. floribunda)(Miq.) Benth, and its main constituent nerolidol against the Mexican mite Tetranychus mexicanus(T. mexicanus)(Mc Gregor).Methods: The essential oil from the roots of D. floribunda collected in the Amazon region(Brazil) was obtained by hydrodistillation. Its chemical composition was determined by GC–MS analysis. The acaricidal activities of this essential oil and nerolidol,were evaluated by recording the number of dead females(mortality) and eggs(fertility).Results: The essential oil showed sesquiterpenes as major volatile components. Nerolidol, the main component, represented 68.5% of the total composition of the essential oil. D. floribunda essential oil and nerolidol showed acaricidal activity, with LC_(50) of9.61 mg/m L air and 9.2 mg/m L air, respectively, over a 72 h period. In addition, both the essential oil and nerolidol significantly reduced the fecundity of T. mexicanus.Conclusions: Due to the economic importance of T. mexicanus and the lack of new pesticides, our data are very promising in the search for efficient and safer acaricidal products. Furthermore, this is the first report about the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oil of the Amazon plant species D. floribunda.

ECF Bleaching with Molybdenum Activated Acid Peroxide and its Impact on Eucalyptus Pulp Properties and Effluent Quality

Acid hydrogen peroxide catalyzed with molybdenum (PMo stage) is effective to decrease pulp kappa number and potentially minimize chlorine dioxide demand in subsequent ECF bleaching. This study aimed at developing cost-effective methods for applying PMo as the first stage bleaching for eucalyptus kraft pulp and evaluating their impact on pulp properties and effluent quality in relation to current ECF bleaching techniques. The PMo(EP)DP and A/PMo(EP)DP sequences proved to be most cost-effective for PMo stage application. The pulp properties and effluent quality derived from bleaching with these two sequences were compared with those of the conventional bleaching with the DHT(EP)DP sequence. The PMo(EP)DP sequence produced pulp of refinability and physical properties similar to that of the reference but the A/PMo(EP)DP one resulted in pulp of 20% lower refinability and 10% lower tearing strength. Untreated effluents of the PMo(EP)DP and A/PMo(EP)DP sequences presented similar COD, but lower AOX and color than the DHT(EP)DP effluents. None of the effluents exhibited acute toxicity. The effluents from the PMo(EP)DP sequence showed much lower BOD and BOD/COD ratio than that of the A/PMo(EP)DP one. All effluents were readily treated in bench-scale reactors, and achieved COD removal efficiencies of greater than 70%.

Oncologic aspects of the decision-making process for surgical approach for colorectal liver metastases progressing during chemotherapy

Colorectal cancer represents the third most diagnosed malignancy in the world.The liver is the main site of metastatic disease,affected in 30%of patients with newly diagnosed disease.Complete resection is considered the only potentially curative treatment for colorectal liver metastasis(CRLM),with a 5-year survival rate ranging from 35%to 58%.However,up to 80%of patients have initially unresectable disease,due to extrahepatic disease or bilobar multiple liver nodules.The availability of increasingly effective systemic chemotherapy has contributed to converting patients with initially unresectable liver metastases to resectable disease,improving long-term outcomes,and accessing tumor biology.In recent years,response to preoperative systemic chemotherapy before liver resection has been established as a major prognostic factor.Some studies have demonstrated that patients with regression of hepatic metastases while on chemotherapy have improved outcomes when compared to patients with stabilization or progression of the disease.Even if disease progression during chemotherapy represents an independent negative prognostic factor,some patients may still benefit from surgery,given the role of this modality as the main treatment with curative intent for patients with CRLM.In selected cases,based on size,the number of lesions,and tumor markers,surgery may be offered despite the less favorable prognosis and as an option for non-chemo responders.

Evaluation of Visceral and Subcutaneous Fat by Ultrasound and Its Relationship with Clinical and Metabolic Parameters of Insulin Resistance and Subclinical Atherosclerosis

Objective: this study set out to investigate the association between abdominal obesity ultrasound measurements, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI), metabolic syndrome (MS) components and subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: sixty patients were recruited and divided equally into two groups, according to the presence of MS. All subjects had an ultrasound examination for measurement of visceral and subcutaneous fat thickness and carotid IMT. Results: the values of visceral fat thickness, preperitoneal circumference and carotid IMT were higher in patients with MS than in control subjects. Visceral fat thickness showed significant correlations with many cardiovascular risk factors (waist circumference, BMI, fasting plasma glucose, HDL and LDL cholesterol). All abdominal obesity measurements were correlated with BMI. Carotid IMT showed correlations with age, visceral fat and preperitoneal circumference. Visceral fat was independently associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressures and fasting plasma glucose. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures and BMI were independent determinants of carotid IMT. Conclusion: visceral fat thickness showed the best correlation with MS components, suggesting that it could be a useful parameter in cardiovascular risk assessment. Age, systolic and diastolic blood pressures and BMI were independent determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis. MS was associated with a higher carotid IMT.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women. Some biomarkers and clinical features are used for the diagnosis and prognosis of this tumor, but no prognostic or predictive marker is routinely available specifically for hormone receptor positive tumors. Homocysteine is well known as a risk factor in atherosclerotic vascular diseases, but its participation in cancer biology is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum Homocysteine and Cysteine as biomarkers of disease progression in breast tumor. As a secondary objective, the effect of a short course (one month) of hormonal treatment on Homocysteine, Cysteine and DNA methylation levels was also evaluated. Methods: Blood samples, tumor samples and normal adjacent tissue were collected during the initial biopsy (pre-treatment) and after one month of hormonal therapy (post-treatment). Serum Homocysteine and Cysteine were analyzed by HPLC and tissue global DNA methylation was determined by the Methylation-Sensitive Restriction Enzyme (MSRE) technique. Results: Variations in Homocysteine levels were significantly correlated with Disease-Free Survival. Cox proportional risk model demonstrated that nodal status and Homocysteine levels were independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival (DFS). A significant difference was observed between pre-and post-treatment levels of Homocysteine and Cysteine in advanced tumors, suggesting a prognostic role in patients with poor clinical characteristics. Conclusion: Although more studies are needed to confirm these results, our research suggests that Hcy might be used as a prognostic biomarker for breast cancer.

The Brunel Mood Scale Rating in Mental Health for Physically Active and Apparently Healthy Populations

There is a positive relationship between mood states and mental health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the construct validity and internal consistency of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) for use with different populations, which are physically active and apparently healthy. Measures were obtained from 1295 male (N = 709, 34 ± 20 years, mean ± SD) and female (N = 576, 43 ± 24 years, mean ± SD) volunteers. Factor analysis was used, verifying that six factors (components) accounted for 62.65% of the total variance of the scale. The Varimax method with Kaiser Normalization for the rotation of the factors for the main components, and it was observed that the 24 scale items loaded on six mood factors (anger, depression, tension, vigor, fatigue, and confusion). Internal consistency was good for all the factors identified. We suggest that the results provide some support for validity of the BRUMS for use with different populations, which are physically active and apparently healthy.
