Comparative Analysis of Two methods for the Assessment of Aesthetic Impairment Involving Teeth

Objective: To analyze and compare the effectiveness of two methods designed for the assessment of esthetic impairment in patients with missing teeth. material and methods: Two methods were addressed in this study: 7-level scale (7LS) and AIPE-Odonto/Brasil. Both tools are designed to assess esthetic dental impairment in civil and criminal Courts. One-hundred and thirteen dentists used the tools to assess dental esthetic impairment in four mock cases (one male and three females). The outcomes of their analyses were compared with pre-established gold-standard scores. Chi-square test was used to investigate the influence of dentists’ sex, age, time of experience and forensic knowledge with their outcomes. Results: Dentists’ outcomes were closer to the expected gold-standard scores when AIPE-Odonto/Brasil was used compared to 7LS (p me of experience and forensic knowledge were significantly associated with the scores obtained with both tools (p mparatively, AIPE-Odonto/Brasil was more effective for the assessment of esthetic dental impairment involving missing teeth compared to the 7LS.

Relevant Aspects of Expert Interest in the Perception of the Facial Aesthetic Damage

Forensic aesthetic facial damage—AFD expert’s valuation is a concerning matter in court as expressively vary in between experts. In fact, differences can be quite significant suggesting examiners age, sex and professional qualification may influence this valuation. Aiming to offer a systematic and more objective evaluation, some methods for assessing AFD had been proposed lately. Known as Aesthetic Impairment Impact Perception (AIPE), Cobo-Plana’s revised methodology (2010) was idealized to minimize the examiner’s subjectivity by means of answering an ordered sequence of questions related to the specific damage perception. This research aims to access AFD perception differences (simulated cases) in between Lawyers, Heath professionals (Physicians and Dental surgeons) and general professionals (laypeople) under AIPE methodology in order to allow a better comprehension of AFD when dealing with forensic expertise cases. Within Groups perceptions varied (p mportant” severity grade. Raters over 35 Years age scored higher AFD lesions, and rater’s sex (as an independent variable) did not express any significant difference in AFD scoring. The tendency of under-rating AFD lesions below very important severity grade was observed being a matter of major concern considered their prevalence and the effective consequences involved to the victim. These results recommend extra caution when performing AFD evaluation and consequently expertise reports, claiming a more judicious analysis based on consolidated standards and suggest, examiners to be more perceptive to physical damage evaluation in order to include social perceptions and reactions, mainly, victims feelings and constrains over their aesthetic loss.

First-year experience of a new skin bank in Brazil

Aim:To report the 1st year experience of the skin bank opened at the Evangelical University Hospital of Curitiba(HUEC),Brazil in June ***:A retrospective statistical and epidemiological study was conducted from data obtained from the activities of the HUEC skin bank from June 2013 to August ***:The HUEC skin bank harvested tissue from 45 cadaveric donors(46.6%female and 53.3%male),with an average age of *** white skin-colored donors represented 91%of *** causes of death were of neurological origin(55.6%).Eighty-one batches were *** bank processed 31,314.63 cm^(2)of skin for transplantation(41 batches),and 38 batches were *** distributed allografts totaled 28,940.82 cm^(2),with tissue from a single donor benefitting up to 5 patients.A total of 52 transplant procedures were performed(66.6%of recipients were male and 33.3%female),burn victims represented 83.3%of the ***:The HUEC skin bank provides skin primarily for victims with severe third-degree burns,mostly men,and who are treated and transplanted in the HUEC as a result of high *** successful outcomes highlight the potential use for other clinical indications.
