Effects of natural mineral-rich water consumption on the expression of sirtuin 1 and angiogenic factors in the erectile tissue of rats with fructose-induced metabolic syndrome

Consuming a high-fructose diet induces metabolic syndrome （MS）-Iike features, including endothelial dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is an early manifestation of endothelial dysfunction and systemic vascular disease. Because mineral deficiency intensifies the deleterious effects of fructose consumption and mineral ingestion is protective against MS, we aimed to characterize the effects of 8weeks of natural mineral-rich water consumption on the structural organization and expression of vascular growth factors and receptors on the corpus cavernosum （CC） in 10% fructose-fed Sprague-Dawley rats （FRUCT）. Differences were not observed in the organization of the CC either on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） or the components of the angiopoietins/Tie2 system. However, opposing expression patterns were observed for VEGF receptors （an increase and a decrease for VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, respectively） in FRUCT animals, with these patterns being strengthened by mineral-rich water ingestion. Mineral-rich water ingestion （FRUCTMIN） increased the proportion of smooth muscle cells compared with FRUCT rats and induced an upregulatory tendency of sirtuin I expression compared with the control and FRUCT groups. Western blot results were consistent with the dual immunofluorescence evaluation. Plasma oxidized low-density lipoprotein and plasma testosterone levels were similar among the experimental groups, although a tendency for an increase in the former was observed in the FRUCTMIN group. The mineral-rich water-treated rats presented changes similar to those observed in rats treated with MS-protective polyphenol-rich beverages or subjected to energy restriction, which led us to hypothesize that the effects of mineral-rich water consumption may be more vast than those directly observed in this study.

Updating the distribution of Nothofagus alessandrii: Impact of deforestation, fragmentation and connectivity

Nothofagus alessandrii forests in the Mediterranean region of Chile face significant threats from deforestation, fragmentation, wildfires, and climate change. This study investigated the temporal and spatial dynamics of N. alessandrii populations and their implications for habitat fragmentation and connectivity. Using remote sensing data and geographic information system analysis, we assessed deforestation patterns, fragmentation metrics, and connectivity indices for different scenarios between 2009 and 2022. A reduction in the N. alessandrii forest area, extensive fragmentation, and decreased connectivity were observed over time, with wildfires exacerbating these trends. Reforestation simulations showed the potential of targeted restoration efforts to improve connectivity, especially when focusing on proximate patches. However, careful consideration of seed dispersal distances and wildfire risk is essential for effective reforestation planning. Overall, our findings underscore the urgent need for conservation interventions to preserve N. alessandrii forests and their biodiversity in Chile's coastal mountain ecosystems. A proactive and collaborative approach is essential to ensure the survival of these forests for future generations.

In the emerging 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) era, the spotlight is sharply focused on the power amplifier, a critical component with stringent specification requirements that dictates the performance of the transmitter. The gallium nitride (GaN) device, with its superior inherent properties, is surfacing as a front-runner for power amplifier applications. The increasing demand for high frequency, high linearity, and cost-effective GaN power amplifiers is driven by anticipated traffic surges and the need for extensive 5G deployment. This paper offers a thorough review and future perspective on research developments in RF GaN device technology. It encompasses critical issues in advanced device and circuit technology, with a focus on high frequency, high linearity, cost-effective GaN-on-Si high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), and compact modeling. This work aims to serve as a guide for the utilization of GaN HEMTs in 5G communication applications. © 2023

Combined Effect of Honey from Central West Brazil on Bacterial Membrane Permeability

Honey, an apicultural product with a complex chemical composition, contains numerous bioactive compounds with potential antimicrobial effects. This study investigated the effect of Apis mellifera honey from Brazil’s Central-West Region, combined with antibiotics, on bacterial membrane permeability, exploring the contributions of bioactive compounds and the botanical origin of honey. Six fresh Apis mellifera honey samples and their fractions (hexane and ethyl acetate) were analyzed, for a total of 18 samples. The bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis, Helicobacter pylori and Enterococcus faecalis were used for antibacterial activity tests, which included minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination and synergistic effect (checkerboard) assays. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were quantified, and the botanical origin was determined based on pollen analysis. The tested honey samples significantly affected bacterial membrane permeability when combined with rifampicin and clarithromycin. Although many honey-derived bioactive compounds, when isolated, did not exhibit significant activity against these bacteria, the additive or synergistic effect of multiple compounds acting on different targets appears to potentiate the antibacterial action. Descriptive statistical analysis, including means and 95% confidence intervals, confirmed the relevance of the findings. This study has provided an important discovery: Honey has an effect on bacterial membrane permeability, although the specific mechanisms involved in this process require further investigation.

Fertilization is required for optimum plant growth, particularly in unfertile soils, while optimizing nutrient use effciency is an alternative to reduce inorganic fertilizer needs and reduce environmental problems caused by nutrient leaching. This study investigated soil properties and cowpea yield responses to biochars(BCs) made from different feedstocks, baby corn peel biochar(BC1), branches of mango tree biochar(BC2), and rice husk biochar(BC3), applied in combination with nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium(NPK) *** experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using an acid sandy soil(Arenosol) that was submitted for 70 d to the following eight treatments: i) control;ii) full dose of NPK(a commercial compound fertilizer(12-24-12 of N-P2O5-K2O)+ urea(46% N));iii) BC1+ half dose of NPK;iv) BC1 + full dose of NPK;v) BC2 + half dose of NPK;vi) BC2 + full dose of NPK;vii) BC3 + half dose of NPK;and viii) BC3 + full dose of NPK. All biochars were applied at a rate of 0.9%(weight/weight), and each type of biochar was combined with half and full doses of NPK fertilizers. Soil pH increased significantly(P < 0.05) in treatments with BC1 and BC2,while cation exchange capacity(CEC) and available P were higher in the treatments with BC1;BC1 and BC2 also induced higher activity of enzymes related to the P cycle and higher cowpea yield. Similar soil properties and cowpea yield parameters were obtained with the full and half doses of NPK fertilizers for each type of biochar used. In conclusion, biochars in the combination with NPK fertilizers improved soil chemistry and enzymatic activities, allowing reduced fertilizer application and food production costs in the acid soil studied.

Phosphorus(P)deficiency is one of the main constraints on crop production in Arenosols(acid sandy soil).The high cost of P fertilizers may represent an insurmountable obstacle in many poor countries,leaving the exploitation of their own calcareous and phosphate rocks as the only low-cost and long-term *** is suggested to have positive effects on soil properties;however,there is no published research on the synergistic effects of biochar and rocky materials in modifying soil *** aim of this study was to investigate the chemical and biochemical responses of an acid Arenosol treated with phosphate rock(PR),calcareous rock(CR),and biochar(BC),and the implications for corn yield.A soil from Marracuene District,Mozambique was used,where corn was grown for 90 d with the soil treated with:no addition(control),water-soluble zinc phosphite fertilizer(WSP),PR,WSP+CR,WSP+BC,WSP+CR+BC,PR+BC,and PR+CR+*** was produced by pyrolysis of babycorn peels for 4 h at 450?C and applied at 11 g *** soil pHH2 Oincreased from about 4.54 in the control to 7.38 in the PR+CR+BC *** oxidizable organic carbon,cation exchange capacity,and available P were higher in the treatments containing BC than in the *** treatments containing CR and/or BC led to the highest activities of alkaline phosphomonoesterase,phosphodiesterase,andα-glucosidase,which increased P availability and gave the greatest biomass and *** suggest that biochar provides additional soluble P and supplies adsorption sites for phosphate,preventing its evolution to unavailable ***,PR applied together with BC contributed to an 840%yield increase compared to the *** treatments containing WSP and BC facilitated phosphite oxidation to phosphate and increased crop yield.
