We are reporting the longest disease-free interval ever published for colorectal cancer, using gene profiling to confirm the linkage of the primary and metastasis. This rare case reports on a patient with late recurrence of colorectal cancer in the lung 19 years after its initial diagnosis. We used high-resolution array CGH(aCGH) to analyze the genetic aberrations of both the primary rectal and the recurrent metastatic lung lesions. Interestingly, we found striking similarities between the two lesions, despite the 19 years disease-free *** addition, most of the genes that were previously reported to be associated with a high recurrence score showed copy number gains by aCGH in one or both lesions. Our findings suggest that aCGH may be a helpful tool in analyzing the origin of metastatic lesions and reflect the need for a better understanding of the characteristics of the rectal tumors with a late recurrence potential.

For two decades Vogelstein's model has been theparadigm for describing the sequence of molecular changes within protein-coding genes that would lead to overt colorectal cancer(CRC). This model is now too simplistic in the light of recent studies, which have shown that our genome is pervasively transcribed in RNAs other than m RNAs, denominated non-coding RNAs(nc RNAs). The discovery that mutations in genes encoding these RNAs [i.e., micro RNAs(mi RNAs), long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs] are causally involved in cancer phenotypes has profoundly modified our vision of tumour molecular genetics and pathobiology. By exploiting a wide range of different mechanisms, nc RNAs control fundamental cellular processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, migration, angiogenesis and apoptosis: these data have also confirmed their role as oncogenes or tumor suppressors in cancer development and progression. The existence of a sophisticated RNA-based regulatory system, which dictates the correct functioning of protein-coding networks, has relevant biological and biomedical consequences. Different mi RNAs involved in neoplastic and degenerative diseases exhibit potential predictive and prognostic properties. Furthermore, the key roles of nc RNAs make them very attractive targets for innovative therapeutic approaches. Several recent reports have shown that nc RNAs can be secreted by cells into the extracellular environment(i.e., blood and other body fluids): this suggests the existence of extracellular signalling mechanisms, which may be exploited by cells in physiology and pathology. In this review, we will summarize the most relevant issues on the involvement of cellular and extracellular nc RNAs in disease. We will then specifically describe their involvement in CRC pathobiology and their translational applications to CRC diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

Trichoderma harzianum enhances tomato indirect defense against aphids

Many fungal root symbionts of the genus Trichoderma are well-known for their beneficial effects on agronomic performance and protection against plant pathogens; moreover, they may enhance protection from insect pests, by triggering plant resistance mechanisms. Defense barriers against insects are induced by the activation of metabolic pathways involved in the production of defense-related plant compounds, either directly active against herbivore insects, or exerting an indirect effect, by increasing the attrac- tion of herbivore natural enemies. In a model system composed of the tomato plant, the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae and the parasitoid Aphidius ervi, plant metabolic changes induced by Trichoderma harzianum and their effects on higher trophic levels have been assessed. T. harzianum T22 treatments induce a primed state that upon aphid attacks leads to an increased attraction of aphid parasitoids, mediated by the enhanced produc- tion of volatile organic compounds （VOCs） that are known to induce Aphidius ervi flight. Transcriptome sequencing of T22-treated plants infested by aphids showed a remarkable upregulation of genes involved in terpenoids biosynthesis and salicylic acid pathway, which are consistent with the observed flight response ofA. ervi and the VOC bouquet profile underlying this behavioral response.

Finding alternative local sources of plant nutrients is a practical, low-cost, and long-term strategy. In this study, laboratory column experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design to evaluate the feasibility of using phosphate rock and dolostone as fertilizers or acid-neutralizing agents for application in tropical acid soils. The dissolution rates of different particle-size fractions(0.063–0.25, 0.25–0.5, and 0.5–2 mm) of both rocks were studied by citric acid solution at p H 4 and 2 and water, with extraction times of 1, 3, 5, 7, 12, 24, 72, 144, 240, and 360 h. The results showed that the dissolution of both rocks depended on the particle size,leaching solution, and extraction time. The dissolution rate of rock-forming minerals increased as the specific surface area increased,corresponding to a decrease in particle size. In all cases, the release kinetics was characterized by two phases: 1) a first stage of rapid release that lasted 24 h and would ensure short-term nutrient release, and 2) a second stage of slow release after 24 h, representing the long-term nutrient release efficiency. Both rocks were suitable as slow-release fertilizers in strongly acid soils and would ensure the replenishment of P, Ca, and Mg. A combination of fine and medium particle-size fractions should be used to ensure high nutrient-release efficiency. Much work could remain to determine the overall impact of considerable amounts of fresh rocks in soils.

This paper aims to deal with the assessment of axial load capacity for cast in place pile foundations, which are made by the earth drill method, by using the data taken from Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) and Piezocone Penetration Tests (CPTUs). These tests were carried out as part of the investigation program for P.N.G. Terminal-Power Plant, near Semani beach, in Hoxhara marsh, in the western part of Albania. The design of axial load capacity of piles is based on empirical formula using SPT and CPTU values. This study presents the results of axial load capacity analysis of cast in place piles by different analytical calculation methods, which are based on in situ tests results, and also referring to the Building Standard Law of Japan. In the end of our work, differences between calculations methods by using different in situ tests results are shown in tables and graphs.

AIM: To evaluate and compare the quality of life of patients submitted to XEN~? implant or trabeculectomy and the relationship with potentially involved ***: A cross-sectional study of patients with advanced open-angle glaucoma who underwent implantation of XEN~?(group 1) and trabeculectomy(group 2) between October 2015 and February 2017. The studied variables were: age, gender, follow-up time, need of topical anti-hypertensive therapy, visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP). The quantification of the quality of life was attained through the Glaucoma Symptom Scale(GSS) questionnaire. RESULTS: Totally 34 eyes(34 patients) were included, 17 in each group. The mean GSS scores for group 1 were 42.6±6.8(median, 47; p25, 36.5; p75, 48.5) and for group 2 it was 41.6±7.0(median, 43; p25, 36.5; p75, 47.0; P=0.34). There was a strong negative correlation between the need for topical anti-hypertensive drugs and the GSS result in both groups(r=-0.88, P<0.01, r=-0.59, P=0.01, respectively) and a moderate negative correlation with IOP in group 1(r=-0.50, P=0.03).CONCLUSION: The analysis demonstrates the noninferiority of medium-term quality of life of one group in relation to the other(XEN~? implant and trabeculectomy). The number of topical anti-hypertensive drugs and IOP negatively influenced the quality of life.

Osmium-Polymer Modified Carbon Nanotube Paste Electrode for Detection of Sucrose and Fructose

The aim of the work was the modification of a carbon nanotube paste electrode with a highly original osmium-polymer hydrogel for the development of a new amperometric biosensor for detection of sucrose and fructose. The biosensor for sucrose is based on the activity of the enzymes invertase and fructose dehydrogenase (FDH) immobilized into a carbon nanotube paste (CNTP) electrode properly modified with the Os-polymer. A second biosensor, for fructose only, is constructed containing inactive invertase and used for detection of fructose and for signal subtraction. The biosensors exhibit a detection limit for sucrose of 2 mM and for fructose of 1 mM, linearity up to 5 mM for both biosensors, high sensitivity (1.98 mA·cm-2·mM for sucrose and 1.95 mA·cm-2·mM for fructose), a good reproducibility (RSD = 2.5% for sucrose and 2.1% for fructose), fast response time (8 s for sucrose and 4 s for fructose) and a stability of about 4 months for both biosensors when stored under wet conditions at 4°C. Finally, the biosensors were applied for specific determination of sucrose and fructose in several commercial fruit juice samples and validated with a commercial spectrophotometric enzymatic kit.
