Fish constitutes the main protein source for the Amazonian ***,the impact of different anthropogenic activities on trace element and metal accumulation in fish and their risks for human health at a regional scale remain largely *** we assessed exposure levels of 10 trace elements andmetals(Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb,and Hg)in 56 samples belonging to 11 different species of fish from the Brazilian *** studied the relationship between exposure levels,fish origin,and fish feeding habits,and assessed toxicological and carcinogenic risks for the Amazonian *** significant correlation was found between sampling site and exposure levels to the studied elements,but a significant difference was found between the accumulation of some metals and the position of the fish species in the food *** concentrations of Cr and Hg in fish flesh were found to exceed the Brazilian limits for human *** study shows that current fish consumption patterns can lead to estimated daily intakes of Hg,As and Cr that exceed the oral reference dose,thus posing a toxicological ***,carcinogenic risks may be expected due to the continued exposure to Cr and *** results of this study show that the consumption of wild caught fish in the Amazon region should be ***,continued monitoring of trace element and metal contamination in fish and on the health of the Amazonian population is recommended,particularly for riverine and indigenous communities.

Arboviral diseases are viral infections transmitted to humans through the bites of arthropods,such as mosquitoes,often causing a variety of pathologies associated with high levels of morbidity and *** the past decades,these infections have proven to be a significant challenge to health systems worldwide,particularly following the considerable geographic expansion of the dengue virus(deNV)and its most recent outbreak in Latin America as well as the difficult-tocontrol outbreaks of yellow fever virus(YFV),chikungunya virus(CHIKV),and Zika virus(ZIKV),leaving behind a substantial portion of the population with complications related to these ***,the world is experiencing a period of intense globalization,which,combined with global warming,directly contributes to wider dissemination of arbovirus vectors across the ***,all continents remain on high alert for potential new ***,this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of the four main arboviruses today(deNV,ZIKV,YFV,and CHIKV)discussing their viral characteristics,immune responses,and mechanisms of viral evasion,as well as important clinical aspects for patient *** includes associated symptoms,laboratory tests,treatments,existing or developing vaccines and the main associated complications,thus integrating a broad historical,scientific and clinical approach.

Overcoming antibiotic-resistant Helicobacter pylori infection:Current challenges and emerging approaches

Recent studies have shown a noticeable increase in global Helicobacter pylori(***)resistance,with clarithromycin resistance surpassing 15%in various ***,inadequate epidemiological monitoring,especially in developing countries,and the absence of uniform testing methods lead to discrepancies between regions and a possible underestimation of resistance *** complexity of treating *** is driven by its highly dynamic genome,which is prone to frequent mutations contributing to phenotypical *** usual course of action in empirical treatment involves using a combination of various drugs simultaneously,leading to significant resistance selection pressure and potential side *** emergence of *** strains resistant to multiple drugs is closely tied to failures in first-line treatment,highlighting the need to prevent further resistance by using optimal initial empirical therapy or regimens guided by antibiotic susceptibility testing,requiring a collection of mixed samples and multiple isolates for accurate *** emergence of new treatments like potassium-competitive acid blockers offers a hopeful approach to decrease antimicrobial usage while still ensuring effectiveness in comparison to traditional therapies with proton pump ***,the use of probiotics is under investigation to identify specific strains and formulations that may mitigate therapy-associated adverse effects.

Oregano and Rosemary Essential Oils in Collagen Fiber and Polyvinyl Alcohol Films: Application as Biodegradable Active Packaging for Ready-to-Eat Meat Products

developing packaging using biomaterials offers a solution to the problem of solid plastic waste in urban areas. However, selecting suitable materials remains challenging, particularly when the packaging is intended for food products with high moisture content, such as meat. In response to this challenge, a novel film comprising a blend of collagen fiber and polyvinyl alcohol, supplemented with varying concentrations of oregano and rosemary essential oils, was developed. The mechanical properties, in vitro antioxidant activity, and chemical composition of these collagen fiber and polyvinyl alcohol films, enhanced with oregano and rosemary essential oils, were thoroughly characterized. The compounds γ-terpinene and ρ-cymene played a significant role in the antioxidant activity of the packaging. The impact of this active packaging on the quality of sliced mortadella was evaluated over 0, 3, 6, and 9 days of refrigeration. Time significantly influenced most of the variables examined. The concentration of essential oils (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) significantly affected the moisture level, water activity, pH, and Escherichia coli count in the packaged product. For lipid oxidation analysis, the type of essential oil proved significant, with oregano essential oil demonstrating superior activity. A pro-oxidant effect was noted in products with 6% rosemary essential oil. Packages containing essential oils from oregano and rosemary exhibited lower E. coli counts. Films enriched with essential oils showed a higher rate of biodegradation.

Atypical Presentation of Crohn’s Disease: Diagnostic Challenges in a Clinical Case

Introduction: Crohn’s Disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a heterogeneous presentation. While diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss are hallmarks, atypical manifestations can obscure the diagnosis. This report highlights an unusual presentation of CD to emphasize the need for comprehensive diagnostic strategies. Case Report: A 25-year-old male presented with peripheral edema, anorexia, and abdominal distension but lacked classic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Laboratory findings included microcytic anemia and hypoalbuminemia, while imaging revealed ascites and bowel wall thickening. Elevated fecal calprotectin and positive Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) supported the diagnosis. Endoscopy confirmed ileocolic Crohn’s Disease (L3 + L4). Infliximab therapy resulted in marked clinical improvement. Discussion: This case underscores the complexity of atypical CD presentations. Early use of serological markers, imaging, and endoscopy guided the diagnosis. Recognition of CD’s diverse manifestations is critical for timely intervention. Conclusion: Atypical CD presentations require heightened clinical suspicion and a multidisciplinary approach to reduce diagnostic delays and improve patient outcomes.

High-throughput phenotyping of two plant-size traits of Eucalyptus species using neural networks

In forest modeling to estimate the volume of wood,artificial intelligence has been shown to be quite effi-cient,especially using artificial neural networks(ANNs).Here we tested whether diameter at breast height(DBH)and the total plant height(Ht)of eucalyptus can be pre-dicted at the stand level using spectral bands measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multispectral sensor and vegetation *** do so,using the data obtained by the UAV as input variables,we tested different configurations(number of hidden layers and number of neurons in each layer)of ANNs for predicting DBH and Ht at stand level for different Eucalyptus *** experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates,with 20 trees in each experimental *** treatments comprised five Eucalyptus species(***,***,***,***-dis,and ***)and Corymbria *** and Ht for each plot at the stand level were measured seven times in separate overflights by the UAV,so that the multispectral sensor could obtain spectral bands to calculate vegetation indices(VIs).ANNs were then constructed using spectral bands and VIs as input layers,in addition to the categorical variable (species), to predict DBH and Ht at the stand level simultaneously. This report represents one of the first appli-cations of high-throughput phenotyping for plant size traits in Eucalyptus species. In general, ANNs containing three hidden layers gave better statistical performance (higher esti-mated r, lower estimated root mean squared error-RMSE) due to their greater capacity for self-learning. Among these ANNs, the best contained eight neurons in the first layer, seven in the second, and five in the third (8 − 7 − 5). The results reported here reveal the potential of using the gener-ated models to perform accurate forest inventories based on spectral bands and VIs obtained with a UAV multispectral sensor and ANNs, reducing labor and time.
