Current approaches for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia （CLL） have greatly improved the prognosis for survival, but some patients remain refractive to these therapeutic regimens. Hence, in addition to reducing the long-term side- effects of therapeutics for all leukemia patients, there is an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies for difficult-to-treat leukemia cases. Due to the cytotoxicity of drugs, the major challenge currently is to deliver the therapeutic agents to neoplastic cells while preserving the viability of non-malignant ceils. In this study, we propose a therapeutic approach in which high doses of hydroxychloroquine and chlorambucil were loaded into biodegradable polymeric nanopartides coated with an anti-CD20 *** first demonstrated the ability of the nanoparticles to target and internalize in tumor B-cells. Moreover, these nanoparticles could kill not only p53-mutated]deleted leukemia cells expressing a low amount of CD20, but also circulating primary ceils isolated from chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients. The safety of these nanoparticles was also demonstrated in healthy mice, and their therapeutic effects were shown in a new model of aggressive leukemia. These results showed that anti-CD20 nanoparticles containing hydroxychloroquine and chlorambucil can be effective in controlling aggressive leukemia and provided a rationale for adopting this approach for the treatment of other B-cell disorders.

Evaluation of Bioactive Properties of α and β Wollastonite Bioceramics Soaked in a Simulated Body Fluid

Dense natural wollastonite bioceramics (CaSiO3) were prepared by a sintering method, varying the pressing load and sintering temperature, in order to obtain different phases of wollastonite, and different physical properties in the materials. The products were characterized by TGA-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, TEM and XPS techniques. The results indicate the presence of two polymorphic phases of wollastonite, the β-wollastonite and α-wollastonite with a transition temperature of the β phase to α phase at approximately 1250℃. These materials were soaked in a simulated body fluid (SBF) during 1, 2 and 3 weeks, to study their solubility and bioactivity. The effect of different wollastonite phases on the solubility of Ca and Si, as well as the capacity of producing layers of “newly formed apatite” on the surfaces of these materials in SBF solution were analyzed.

Evaluation of the Use of Gamma Radiation for Reduction of Aflatoxin B1 in Corn(Zea mays)Used in the Production of Feed for Broiler Chickens

Corn is one of the main grasses used to produce human or animal food. One of the main problems with the use of corn is the presence of mycotoxins, where aflatoxin B1 is one of the most harmful for human and animal health. Chemical methods such as the addition of antifungals and sequestrants are used to control this contaminant in food;however, these methods can leave dangerous residues. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of irradiation with gamma rays on corn for the control of aflatoxin B1. For this purpose, three treatments were compared: treatment 1, application of gamma radiation, treatment 2, application of antifungal and treatment 3, combination of gamma radiation and application of antifungal. Corn without exposure to any control of aflatoxin was used as a witness group. Irradiation doses of 2, 6 and 10 kGy were tested, and the dose of 6 kGy was selected as the best since it lowered aflatoxin B1 more effectively. The corn analyzed in this study was stored during 45 days at 23°C, and every 15 days. We determined the concentration of aflatoxin B1, presence or absence of pathogenic microorganisms and insects, and we evaluated the physicochemical characteristics of the grain. Then, the treatments were compared and treatment 1, only irradiation with gamma rays, proved to be significantly more effective in the reduction of aflatoxin B1 and the total inhibition of the survival of the insects during the 45 days of storage which allowed better preservation of the protein. All treatments controlled the growing of pathogenic microorganisms as Salmonella and Enterobacteriacea, and kept the humidity of the grain in values lower than 13%. The cost production of a bag of 40 kg of feed was also estimated in USD 22.56;which is1.80% greater than the cost corresponding to the conventional process that uses mycotoxin sequestrants.

Hospital without dyspnea： rationale and design of a multidisciplinary intervention

Dyspnea is a common and disabling symptom of respiratory and heart diseases, which is growing in incidence. During hospital admis- sion, breathlessness is under-diagnosed and under-treated, although there are treatments available for controlling the symptom. We have developed a tailored implementation strategy directed to medical staff to promote the application of these pharmacological and non-pharmacological tools in dealing with dyspnea. The primary aim is to decrease the rate of patients that do not receive an adequate relief of dyspnea. This is a four-stage quasi-experimental study. The intervention consists in two teaching talks that will be taught in Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine Departments. The contents will be prepared by Palliative Care specialists, based on available tools for management of dyspnea and patients＇ needs. A cross-sectional study of dyspnea in hospitalized patients will be performed before and after the intervention to ascertain an improvement in dyspnea intensity due to changes in medical practices. The last phase consists in the creation of consensus protocols for dyspnea management based in our experience. The results of this study are expected to be of great value and may change clinical practice in the near future and promote a changing for the better of dyspnea care.

Zinc bioleaching from an iron concentrate using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain from Hercules Mine of Coahuila,Mexico

The iron concentrate from Hercules Mine of Coahuila,Mexico,which mainly contained pyrite and pyrrhotite,was treated by the bioleaching process using native strain Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans （***） to determine the ability of these bacteria on the leaching of *** native bacteria were isolated from the iron concentrate of the *** bioleaching experiments were carried out in shake flasks to analyze the effects of pH values,pulp density,and the ferrous sulfate concentration on the bioleaching *** results obtained by microbial kinetic analyses for the evaluation of some aspects of zinc leaching show that the native bacteria ***,which is enriched with a 9K Silverman medium under the optimum conditions of pH 2.0,20 g/L pulp density,and 40 g/L FeSO4,increases the zinc extraction considerably observed by monitoring during15 d,i.e.,the zinc concentration has a decrease of about 95% in the iron concentrate.

To determine which patients with Early Inflammatory Polyarthritis (EIP) with less than a year of evolution of the disease without a definitive diagnosis, progressed to rheumatoid arthritis according to ACR1987 criteria, we developed a predictive model for classification of early rheumatoid arthritis, based on clinical characteristics by observation of theonset of the disease and to relate with certain laboratory variables. A total of 54 patients with arthritis of less than one year of evolution were evaluated. We conducted a physical examination and the following parameters were determined: DAS 28, HAQ, Rheumatoid Factor (RF), Citrullinated Peptide (anti-CCP) and C-Telopeptide (CTx-II);radiology of hands and feet was also carried out, and was assessed by the Sharp method modified by van der Heijde. The patient follow-up was performed every 3 months for 12 months, classifying them according to the development of self-limiting, persistent non-erosive, and persistent erosive arthritis, and according to definite diagnosis. We estimated the relative risk and 95% confidence intervals for the predictor variables considered. Overall, 80.4% of patients with EIP evolved to persistent arthritis. Most persistent arthritis was diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (67.4%). However 51.6% (16/31) were anti-CCP positive, 21/31 (67.7%) were RF, and 11/31 (35%) were CTx-II positive. The basal nodes and RF were able to predict the persistence of activity and symmetry;rheumatoid nodules predict the development of erosions. It is important to note that patients who had an high initial average by the Sharp method modified by van der Heijde tend to have a greater increase in erosion at 6 months compared to those who had an initial low average (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.40, p < 0.015). An initial erosive disease increases the risk of radiological progression.

Objective:To investigate the vasorelaxant effect of organic extracts from Apium graveolens(***)which is a part of a group of plants subjected to pharmacological and phytochemical study with the purpose of offering it as an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive ***:An ex vivo method was employed to assess the vasorelaxant *** consisted of using rat aortic rings with and without endothelium precontracted with ***:All extracts caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortic rings with and without endothelium;the most active extracts were Dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate extracts from *** results suggested that secondary metabolites responsible for the vasorelaxant activity belong to a group of compounds of medium ***,our evidence showed that effect induced by dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from *** is mediated probably by calcium ***:*** represents an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.

Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO Film on Stainless Steel Wire and Bioaerosol Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation

ZnO thin films were prepared by electrophoretic deposition on stainless steel wire sieve, using zinc acetate as a precursor. The film was sintered and characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM）, X-Ray Diffraction （XRD） and chemisorption of oxygen. A culture bacterial consortium composed by gram negative rod-shaped microbes was prepared in a liquid agar in a flask. It was transported by air through a reactor equipped with a UV lamp with 3 and 5 sieves of a stainless steel wire coated with ZnO film. It was exposed in continuous in five experiments to photocatalytic advanced oxidation. The experiments showed a total efficiency for colony forming unit reduction of a maximum of 99.66% for a residence time of 20 seconds with 5 stainless steel wire where exposed in continuous to UV. Also they were evaluated at 7.5 seconds, observing that the contribution of residence time and amount of catalytic for the CFU reduction was quite similar. Variance analysis showed that the efficiency was significant with the no parametric Kruskal-Wallis test with P 〈 0.05. This technology could be used to clean indoor air of closed environments such as hospitals, crowded buildings or public transportation systems where airborne bacteria has been documented.

We present results of a long-term study aimed to optimize Nile tilapia O. niloticus production in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in México City. Three experiments were evaluated: 1) fry production;2) production of masculinized fries;and 3) assessment of growth under three different densities (10, 30 and 75 fish/m3). The broodstock produced on average 2400 ± 600 fry every 15 days during six months, with a total production of 28,800 ± 2000. One hundred percent males were produced in 274-L raceways in an eight-week period. The obtained results in fish production in the RAS system indicated variations related to density. A daily growth rate of 3.6 g/day was registered with a density of 10 fish/m3, 0.9 g/day in 30 fish/m3 and 0.4 g/day in 75 fish/m3. This information could be useful for production purposes in this type of systems.

Studies of biodiversity dynamics have been cast on either long(systematics)or short(ecology)time scales,leaving a gap in coverage for moderate time scales of decades to ***-scale biodiversity information resources now available offer opportunities to fill this gap for many parts of the world via detailed,quantitative comparisons of assemblage composition,particularly for regions without rich time series *** explore the possibility that such changes in avifaunas across the United States and Canada before and after the first three decades of marked global change(i.e.,prior to 1980 versus after 2010)can be reconstructed and characterized from existing primary biodiversity *** an illustration of the potential of this methodology for sites even in regions not as well sampled as the United States and Canada,we also explored changes at a single site in Mexico(Chichén-Itzá).We analyzed two large-scale datasets:one summarizing bird records in the United States and Canada before 1980,and one for the same region after *** used probabilistic inventory completeness analyses to identify sites that have avifaunas that have likely been inventoried more or less *** prepared detailed comparisons between the two time periods to analyze species showing distributional changes over the time period *** identified 139 sites on a 0.05°grid that were demonstrably well-inventoried before 1980 in the United States and Canada,of which 108 were also well-inventoried after *** presence/absence patterns between the two time periods for 601 bird species,we found significant spatial autocorrelation in overall avifaunal turnover(species gained and lost),but not in numbers of species *** noted potential northward retractions of ranges of several species with high-latitude(boreal)distributions,while other species showed dominant patterns of population loss,either rangewide(e.g.,Tympanuchus cupido)or regionally(e.g.,Thryomanes bewickii).We dev
