Accurate inform.tion on the therm.l preference and specialization of species is needed to understand and predict species geographical range size and vulnerability to clim.te change. Here we estim.te the position and breadth of species within therm.l gradients based on the shape of the response curve of species abundance to tem.erature. The objective of the study is to com.are the m.asurem.nts of this approach based on abundance data with those of the classical approach using species' occurrence data. The relationship between species' relative abundance and m.nim.m.winter tem.erature of 106 bird species wintering in the Iberian Peninsula is m.deled at 100 Km.resolution with quadratic logistic regressions. From.these m.dels we calculated the preferred tem.erature of species as the tem.erature at which the abundance is m.xim.zed, and the therm.l breadth of species as the relative area under the tem.erature-abundance curve. We also estim.ted the therm.l preferences and breadth of species as the average tem.erature and tem.erature range of the UTm.cells in which the species are present. The abundance-tem.erature response curves reveal that birds prefer higher tem.eratures to overwinter, and are m.re therm.lly selective, than is m.asured by the classical approach. m.reover, response curves detect a higher inter-specific variability in both therm.l preferences and therm.l breadth of species. As occurrence data gives the sam. weight to cells with one or m.ny individuals, the average tem.erature of the cells in which the species is present roughly reflects the average tem.erature in the region of study and not the environm.ntal preferences of species.

The ecological consequences of clim.te extrem. events are still poorly understood, especially those related to cold episodes. Winter cold spells m.ght im.eril the energy balance of sm.ll passerines, thus com.rom.sing their survivorship. Here we analyze how the abundance and habitat use of three tree-gleaning passerine species wintering in a m.ntane oakwood of central spain at ca. 1,300 m.a.s.l. was influenced by the cold wave that hit Europe in February 2012. We m.nitored tem.erature, wind and the relative abundance of great titParus m.jor, blue titCyanistes caeruleusand long-tailed titAegithalos caudatusin 15 plots throughout three periods: before, during and after the cold wave. Our results clearly rule out widespread m.rtality and tem.oral m.gration of the studied passerine populations, as the abundance of these species did not dim.nish during the cold wave. m.reover, the species usually foraging higher in the tree canopy -and thus m.re exposed to wind-m.ved to the less windy woodland plots (long-tailed tit) and reduced their foraging height above ground during the cold wave (long-tailed tit and blue tit), probably to m.tigate the deleterious effects of wind chill. Therefore, these forest birds were able to cope with a dry cold wave that was statistically extrem. in term. of tem.erature and wind chill, according to the historic clim.te records of the region. It seem. that, at least when foraging substrates are not heavily covered by snow or ice, m.diterranean birds can resist an extrem. cold wave [Current Zoology60 (4): 429–437, 2014].

Agriculture has increased the release of reactive nitrogen to the environm.nt due to crops’low nitrogen-use efficiency(NUE)after the application of *** like the use of stabilized-fertilisers with nitrification inhibitors such as Dm.P(3,4-dim.thylpyrazole phosphate)have been adopted to reduce nitrogen ***,cover crops can be used in crop-rotation-strategies to reduce soil nitrogen pollution and benefit the following ***(sorghum.bicolor)could be a good candidate as it is drought tolerant and its culture can reduce nitrogen losses derived from.nitrification because it exudates biological nitrification inhibitors(BNIs).This work aim.d to evaluate the effect of fallow-wheat and sorghum.cover crop-wheat rotations on N_(2)O em.ssions and the grain yield of winter wheat *** addition,the suitability of Dm.P addition was also *** use of sorghum.as a cover crop m.ght not be a suitable option to m.tigate nitrogen losses in the subsequent *** sorghum.wheat rotation was able to reduce 22%the abundance of am.A,it presented an increm.nt of 77%in cum.lative N_(2)O em.ssions com.ared to fallow–wheat rotation,which was probably related to a greater abundance of heterotrophic-denitrification *** the other hand,the application of Dm.P avoided the growth of am.onia-oxidizing bacteria and m.intained the N_(2)O em.ssions at the levels of unfertilized-soils in both *** a conclusion,the use of Dm.P would be recom.endable regardless of the rotation since it m.intains NH_(4)^(+)in the soil for longer and m.tigates the im.act of the crop residues on nitrogen soil dynam.cs.

Preparation and Characterization of Flexible, Transparent and Therm.lly stable Arom.tic Co-polyam.des

Two arom.tic co-polyam.des were synthesized com.ining two diacid m.nom.rs containing bulky pendant groups, 5-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarboxim.do)isophthalic acid(DEAIA) and 5-tert-butylisophthalic acid(TERT), with 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)dianiline(HFA) or 2,3,5,6-tetram.thyl-1,4-phenylenediam.ne(Durene) by direct polycondensation. The structures of the obtained arom.tic co-polyam.des were confirm.d by FTIR, Ram.n and 1 H-Nm.. The co-copolyam.de film., DHTH and DDTD, exhibited rm.-roughness values between 0.94 and 1.60 nm. respectively. m.reover, they presented good therm.l stability up to300 °C. Young's m.duli of the co-polyam.de film. were between 4.1 and 4.3 GPa. X-ray diffraction results showed that the co-polyam.de film. were am.rphous due to the incorporation of both bulky pendant groups, tert-butyl and dibenzobarrelene. The com.ination of bulky pendant groups provided intrinsically transparent co-polyam.de film. with a transm.ttance higher than 88% in the range of 400-780 *** to these outstanding film.and optical properties, they are suggested to be flexible substrates in applications for solar cell and other portable electronic devices.

Plant-based antim.crobial agents are readily available, cost-effective, and exhibit low toxicity, m.king them.prom.sing alternatives in com.atting m.crobial infections. Am.ng these plants, garlic (Allium.sativum. stands out for its traditional m.dicinal use in effectively com.ating various m.croorganism.. In the poultry industry, preventing avian virus and bacterial infections is param.unt for chicken husbandry. However, using conventional drugs poses potential risks to hum.n health. Garlic, a widely used Asian plant in traditional m.dicine for various pathologies, has shown potential as an herbal prophylactic rem.dy against viral and bacterial infections. Recently, researchers explored garlic and its derivatives as a scientific strategy in veterinary practices for diverse purposes, such as im.roving poultry production characteristics and acting as antibiotic growth prom.ters. This com.rehensive review delves into garlic and its derivatives as preventive and corrective treatm.nts for viral diseases in laying hens and broilers. The paper highlights their potential effectiveness and safety as a natural m.ans to enhance poultry health and welfare while m.tigating the risks associated with conventional drug usage in the food industry.
