The habituation of cell cultures to cellulose biosynthesis inhibitors such as dichlobenil （DcB） represents a valu- able tool to improve our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in plant cell wall structural plasticity. Maize cell lines habituated to lethal concentrations of DcB were able to grow through the acquisition of a modified cell wall in which cellulose was partially replaced by a more extensive network of arabinoxylans. The aim of this work was to investigate the phenolic metabolism of non-habituated and DcB-habituated maize cell cultures. Maize cell cultures were fed [14c]cinnamate and the fate of the radioactivity in different intra-protoplasmic and wall-localized fractions throughout the culture cycle was analyzed by autoradiography and scintillation counting. Non-habituated and habituated cultures did not markedly differ in their ability to uptake exogenous [14c]cinnamic acid. However, interesting differences were found in the radiolabeling of low- and high-Mr metabolites. Habituated cultures displayed a higher number and amount of radiola-beled low-Mr compounds, which could act as reserves later used for polysaccharide feruloylation. DcB-habituated cultures were highly enriched in esterified [14c]dehydrodiferulates and larger coupling products. In conclusion, an extensive and early cross-linking of hydroxycinnamates was observed in DcB-habituated cultures, probably strengthening their cellulose-deficient walls.

Tertiary lymphoid structures(TLS)are ectopic lymphoid formations that form within nonlymphoid *** share structural and functional characteristics with secondary lymphoid structures such as lymph nodes and can contain B-cell follicles and germinal centers surrounded by a T-cell *** have been described in several types of cancers and are usually associated with positive patient ***,TLS differ vastly in cellular composition and location within tissue *** this review,we discuss factors confounding the interpretation of the evidence for a prognostic role for TLS in cancer and frame these factors in the context of translation to regular clinical use.

Indiscriminate disposal of residues of domestic and/or industrial origin in aquatic ecosystems resulting from urban activities causes concern about their effects on the fauna. Substances absorbed by animals, such as those cited above, are metabolized by the liver, as it is the main target organ of several pollutants and also exercises basic vital functions in the organism. For this reason the liver is used as the main and most reliable biomarker in environmental studies. Thus the objective of the present study was to identify hepatic alterations resulting from exposure to water contaminated by a few commercial brands of biodegradable detergents and their effects when present together with several other contaminants found in nature. For such, a solution of 1 ppm of biodegradable detergents and water from an urban lake were tested on two widely distributed native Brazilian fish (Astyanax altiparanae and Prochilodus lineatus). Several alterations were found on the liver, including cytoplasm vacuolization, nuclear displacement, macrophage recruitment and reduced liver glycogen, showing a degenerative process in the liver of the fish, due to the action of contaminants.

Efflorescent nanophases(NPs) are found as a transitory accumulation of potentially hazardous elements(PHEs),particularly in tropical climates. The central objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of PHEs with NPs through the evaporative formation structures(EFS) of enormously PHEs-rich coal-mine drainages(cMD). The EFS were studied in natural coal mine drainage for five months in order to determine their geochemical and ecological structures and to assess their position in the reduction of PHEs in nature. The largest coal-fired power plant in South America, located in south Brazil, is used as an example of such a problem. In this work, a novel methodology for the analysis of PHEs in cMD precipitates is proposed for this affected coal *** analytical method, combining X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and advanced electron microscopies, shows the importance of nanomineralogy in understanding different circumstances of coal contamination. Several ultrafinenanoparticles(UNPs) were identified in the sampled soils and river sediments together with the PHEs. A decrease in PHEs was identified in association with UNPs. However, further investigations are required with regard to the mobility of PHEs in water, atmosphere, soils, and sediments. The EPS was thoroughly studied, acquiring suitable understanding with investigational facts for ca and Fe-sulphates, pickeringite, and several amorphous phases.

Entomopathogenic fungi, such as Metarhizium anisopliae, are able to control various insect pests. These fungi attack the integument of the host using an enzymatic complex. Among the enzymes found in this complex, chitinase is an important component. However, the relation between the chitinase production and the virulence from different M. anisopliae strains has not been analyzed. In this manuscript it is presented the chitinase production by four M. anisopliae strains with different potential of virulence in Solid-State Fermentation using silkworm chrysalis as substrate. The higher chitinase level was obtained with the strain IBcB 360 (7.14 U/g of substrate) with potential virulence of 68% on Diatrea saccharalis. The enzyme production was optimized for all strains using a factorial planning (ccRD) considering the cultivation time and medium humidity as independent variables. The maximal production of chitinase was obtained at a range from 8 to 12-days old cultures and from 45% to 62% of moisture according to the surface response plot, with high R2 value. The enzyme production by the strain IBcB 167 was increased two-folds under optimized conditions, while for the strains IBcB 360 and 425 the chitinase production was increased four-folds and nine-folds for the strain IBcB 384.

＜正＞ This work describes the silicon implementation of a new sample-and-hold circuit topology. The main feature of the circuit is its auto-zero capability. The auto-zero corrects the offset voltage generated by the transistor mismatch in the differential pair and the charge injected by the NMOS switches in the sampling capacitor. The circuit was implemented in 0,8μm cMOS process from AMS. The results, initially obtained from simulations, were compared to real laboratory measurements. The comparison indicates that the measurements and the simulated results have a very close correspondence. The circuit is capable of reducing the total sample-and-hold output error to just 0.14% at a sampling rate of 250KHz.

AIM： To evaluate the differences that exist bet- ween peripheral and mesenteric serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen （cEA） and cytokeratins in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma. METHODS： One hundred and thirty-eight patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery at Hospital Sao Paulo （Discipline of Surgical Gastroenterology of UNIFESP-EPM） between December 1993 and March 2000 were retrospectively analyzed. Differences between cEA and cytokeratin （TPA-M） levels in peripheral blood （P） and in mesenteric blood （M） were studied. Associations were investigated between peripheral and mesenteric levels and the staging and histopathological variables （degree of cell differentiation, macroscopic appearance, tumor dimensions and presence of lymphatic and venous invasion）. RESULTS： Differences were observed in the numerical values of the marker levels： cEA （M）（39.10 mg/1 ± 121.19 mg/L） vs cEA （P）（38.5 mg/L ± 122.55 mg/L）, P 〈 0.05; TPA-M （M）（325.06 U/L ±527.29 U/L） vs TPA-M （P）（279.48 U/L ±455.81 U/L）, P 〈 0.01. The mesenteric cEA levels were higher in more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01）, in vegetating lesions （34.44 mg/L ± 93.07 mg/L）（P 〈 0.01） and with venous invasion （48.41 mg/L ± 129.86 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. Peripheral cEA was higher with more advanced staging （P 〈 0.01）and in lesions with venous invasion （53.23 mg/L ± 258.57 mg/L）（P 〈 0.05）. The patients demonstrated increased mesenteric and peripheral TPA-M levels with more advanced tumors （P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.01） and in non-ulcerated lesions [530.45 U/L =1= 997.46 U/L （P 〈 0.05） and 457.95 U/L ± 811.36 U/L （P 〈 0.01）]. cONcLUSION： The mesenteric levels of the tumor markers cEA and cytokeratins were higher than the peripheral levels in these colorectal adenocarcinoma patients, Higher levels of these biologic tumor markers are associated with an advanced state of cancerous dissemination
