The primary aim of this study is to correlate the impact of aggregates,if any,on the viscoelastic behavior of rejuvenated asphalt mixtures containing very high amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP)(>50%).First,gradation of 100%RAP was rectified,using a modified Bailey method by adding virgin aggregates to achieve two coarse dense-graded and one fine dense-graded *** modulus test was then performed from−35 to+35℃and 0.01–10 *** addition to performance grade(PG)testing,extracted and recovered binders from different asphalt mixtures underwent shear complex modulus test within−8℃to high temperature PG and frequencies from 0.001 to 30 ***−Cole,Black space,complex modulus and phase angle master curves were constructed and ShiftHomothety-Shift in time-Shift(SHStS)transformation was used to compare the linear viscoelastic behavior of asphalt binders and *** influence of aggregates on the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mixtures depends on temperature and/or *** role of asphalt binders in the behavior of asphalt mixtures is more pronounced at high temperatures and the effect of the aggregate structure increases as the temperature *** maximum difference(60%to 70%)in the viscoelastic behavior of the binder and mixture based on SHStS transformed Cole−Cole curves is within the phase angle of 15°–20°.

Understanding the biological parameters of some triatomine subspecies of Meccus phyllosomus （Burmeister） is a crucial first step in estimating the epidemiologie importance of this group. Biological parameters related to hatching, lifetime, number of blood meals to molt, percentage of females at the end of the cycle, number of laid eggs, and mortality for each instar of 3 M. phyllosomus subspecies [M. p. mazzottii （Usinger）, M. p. pallidipennis （Stal）, and M. p. phyllosomus] and their laboratory hybrids were evaluated and compared. No significant differences （P 〉 0.05） were found among the experimental hybrids （MaPa, MaPhy, PaPhy） and reciprocal cohorts. In 5 （hatching, number of blood meals to molt, accumulative mortality, percentage of females, and mean number of laid eggs） of the 6 studied parameters （with the exception of development time）, the hybrid cohorts had better fitness results than the parental cohorts involved in each set of crosses. The increase in hybrid fitness found in our study could lead to an increase in the epidemiologic risks caused by transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi to humans.

AIM: To investigate the role of genes and kinetics of specific transcription factors in liver regeneration, and to analyze the gene expression and the activity of some molecules crucially involved in hepatic regeneration. METHODS: USING gel-shift assay and RT-PCR, transcription factors, such as NF-κB, STAT-3, SMAD3 and AP-1, and gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and c-met were analyzed in an animal model of chemically induced hepatectomy. RESULTS: Gene expression of HGF and its receptor c-met peaked at 3 h and 24 h after acute CCl4 intoxi- cation. iNOS expression was only observed from 6 to 48 h. Transcriptional factor NF-κB had an early activation at 30 min after acute liver damage. STAT-3 peaked 3 h post- intoxication, while AP-1 displayed a peak of activation at 48 h. SMAD3 showed a high activity at all analyzed times. CONCLUSION: TNF-α and IL-6 play a central role in hepatic regeneration. These two molecules are responsible for triggering the cascade of events and switch-on of genes involved in cell proliferation, such as growth factors, kinases and cyclins which are direct participants of cell proliferation.

The liver is the largest internal organ of the body, which may suffer acute or chronic injury induced by many factors, leading to cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. Cirrhosis is the irreversible end result of fibrous scarring and hepatocellular regeneration, characterized by diffuse disorganization of the normal hepatic structure, regenerative nodules and fibrotic tissue. Cirrhosis is associated with a high co-morbidity and mortality without effective treatment, and much research has been aimed at developing new therapeutic strategies to guarantee recovery. Liver-based gene therapy has been used to downregulate specific genes, to block the expression of deleterious genes, to delivery therapeutic genes, to prevent allograft rejection and to augment liver regeneration. Viral and non-viral vectors have been used, with viral vectors proving to be more efficient. This review provides an overview of the main strategies used in liver-gene therapy represented by non-viral vectors, viral vectors, novel administration methods like hydrodynamic injection, hybrids of two viral vectors and blocking molecules, with the hope of translating findings from the laboratory to the patient′s bed-side.

AIM:To determine the molecular mechanisms involved in experimental hepatic fibrosis prevention by caffeine(CFA).METHODS:Liver fibrosis was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal thioacetamide or bile duct ligation and they were concomitantly treated with CFA(15 mg/kg per day).Fibrosis and inflammatory cell infiltrate were evaluated and classified by Knodell *** infiltrate was quantified by immunohistochemistry(anti-CD11b).Gene expression was analyzed by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for collagenⅠ?(Col-1),connective tissue growth factor(CTGF),transforming growth factorβ1(TGF-β1),tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α),interleukin-1(IL-1),IL-6,superoxide dismutase(SOD)and catalase(CAT).Activation of Nrf2 and Snail-1 was analyzed by ***-αexpression was proved by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay,CAT activity was performed by ***:CFA treatment diminished fibrosis index in treated *** Knodell index showed both lower fibrosis and *** of profibrogenic genes CTGF,Col-1 and TGF-β1 and proinflammatory genes TNF-α,IL-6 and IL-1 was substantially diminished with CFA treatment with less CD11b positive *** lower values of transcriptional factor Snail-1 were detected in CFA treated rats compared with cirrhotic rats without treatment;in contrast Nrf2was increased in the presence of *** of SOD and CAT was greater in animals treated with CFA showing a strong correlation between mRNA expression and enzyme ***:Our results suggest that CFA inhibits the transcriptional factor Snail-1,down-regulating profibrogenic genes,and activates Nrf2 inducing antioxidant enzymes system,preventing inflammation and fibrosis.

Study Objective: To determine whether a new emergency department short-stay unit (EDSSU) was an effective alternative to conventional hospital units (HU) for acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure patients. Methods: Design: A comparative analysis was used to identify differences among patients admitted to EDSSU (n = 1546) and those admitted to the internal medicine (n = 552) or cardiology wards (n = 336) during the period of the study (January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2012). Setting: The study was performed at Sant Pau Hospital, a 500-bed teaching tertiary care referral center in Barcelona, Spain. The ED attends about 144,000 emergency visits per year. Participants: We studied retrospectively the characteristics of patients hospitalized with an acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2012 (n = 2434). We chose charts of patients from the hospital discharge database and selected according to the 9th revision of the International Classification of Diseases Codes. We used the computerized database to obtain outcome data on all patients. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in terms of mean age (HU: 77.38 (14.44) years versus EDSSU: 82.43 (8.72) years;p p p p = 0.998). There were statistically significant differences regarding sex (HU women = 60.6%;EDDSU women = 67.7%;p p < 0.001). Conclusion: The EDSSU proved to be an effective and safe measure in emergency care of patients with acute heart failure (AHF).

This research work aims to contribute in increasing the fruit set in citrus, given its importance in determining fruit yield. The authors evaluated the effects of phytohormones （auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins） in the mooring and features of orange fruit in cultivars Washington navel and Thomson （Citrus sinensis （L.） Osb.）, The experiment was established in a split plot randomized complete block design with five treatments and four replications. Flower tissue samples were stored in liquid N until the extraction of gibberellins and the identification and quantification of GA3. The results showed statistically significant difference （P 〈 0.05） between treatments in the number of fruits retained 129 d after flowering and the percentage of final tie. GA3 content ranged, on a dry weight basis, from 1.66 mg＇g1 in the control to 20.79 mg.g-1 in the high dose. The mean dose （32.2 mg.L-1 auxins, gibberellins 32.2 mg L-1 and 83.2 mg.L-1 cytokinins） caused the largest increase in fruit set.

Vinasse is the main residue generated during alcohol, sugar and blue rum production by fermentation process. This residue is effluent that could cause serious environmental pollution due to high organic load when is not treated adequately. The aim of this work consists of evaluating the efficiency and application of heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2, followed by a biological treatment (activated sludge system) to reduce organic load in the referred effluent. Complete factorial designs indicated the best experimental conditions subsequent to photacatalytic and biological treatments providing a reduction of non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) as a variable response. After the photocatalytic process, the sample from the best experiment condition was treated by a biological process in order to verify the degradation efficiency of the effluent organic matter studied according to the hybrid system (Advanced Oxidation Process—Acti- vated Sludge System). This system, which presented more efficiency, had a photochemical treatment of 180 minutes carried out in aerated solutions, pH 9 and effluent in natura, while the biological treatment was performed at pH 8 and sludge concentration of 5 gL–1. The reduction of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was >80%.
