Anti-inflammatory effects of Mangifera indica *** in a model of colitis

AIM:To investigate the effect of aqueous extract from Mangifera indica L.(MIE)on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in ***:MIE(150 mg/kg)was administered in two different protocols:(1)rectally,over 7 d at the same time as DSS administration;and(2)once daily over 14 d (by oral gavage,7 d before starting DSS,and rectally for 7 d during DSS administration).General observations of clinical signs were ***-inflammatory activity of MIE was assessed by myeloperoxidase(MPO)activity. Colonic lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS).Reduced glutathione(GSH)levels,expression of inflammatory related mediators[inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2,respectively]and cytokines[tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand TNF receptors 1 and 2]in colonic tissue were also ***(IL)-6 and TNF-α serum levels were also measured. RESULTS:The results demonstrated that MIE has anti-inflammatory properties by improvement of clinical signs,reduction of ulceration and reduced MPO activity when administered before *** addition,administration of MIE for 14 d resulted in an increase in GSH and reduction of TBARS levels and iNOS,COX-2, TNF-αand TNF R-2 expression in colonic tissue,and a decrease in IL-6 and TNF-αserum levels. CONCLUSION:MIE has anti-inflammatory activity in a DSS-induced rat colitis model and preventive administration(prior to DSS)seems to be a more effective protocol.

The nineteenth century’s quest for the missing matter (Vulcan) ended with the publication of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. We contend that the current quest for the missing matter is parallel in its perseverance and in its ultimate futility. After setting the search for dark matter in its historic perspective, we critique extant dark matter models and offer alternative explanations—derived from a Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian—that will, at the very least, sow seeds of doubt about the existence of dark matter.

<i>In Vitro</i>Effect of Soy Isoflavone and Equol on Soluble CD40L Release Stimulated by Ristocetin in Platelets from Postmenopause Women

The inhibition of specific flavonoid on the in vitro platelet aggregation induced by collagen, arachidonic acid and thromboxane A2 (TxA2) agonist, seems to be related mostly to their ability to compete for binding to the TxA2 receptor (TP). The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of soy isoflavone and equol in terms of inhibiting the platelet aggregation and sCD40L release stimulated by ristocetin, an in vitro-activator of glycoprotein Ib/IX/V, in platelets from postmenopausal women. When platelets were stimulated by 0.75 mg/ml ristocetin, equol (10 μM) exhibited a greater inhibitory activity on platelet aggregation (~68%) than genistein or daidzein. The effect of equol was dependent on the concentration of platelet aggregation agonist. In the presence of ristocetin (0.75 mg/ml, 1.125 mg/ml and 1.5 mg/ml), the inhibitory effect of 10 μM equol was 68% ± 5%, 54% ± 4% and 31% ± 5%, respectively. Equol (10 μM) was a potent inhibitor (~35%) of sCD40L release when stimulated with 1.5 mg/ml ristocetin. However, no significant differences were noted in platelets incubated in the presence of genistein or daidzein and stimulated by ristocetin. On the other hand, SQ29548, a high TP antagonist, also inhibited the sCD40L release stimulated by ristocetin. Finally, 10 μM of genistein, daidzein or equol did not significantly affect the thromboxane B2 production when platelets were incubated with 1.5 mg/ml ristocetin. The relevance of this study was to find that equol exhibits a potent activity by inhibiting ristocetin-induced sCD40L release, suggesting that soy isoflavone has important biological effects on the hemostatic system. However, clinical trials will be necessary to assess the effect of equol on platelet and their impact on inflammatory markers.

Several ectoparasites parasitise nestlings decreasing their body condition,growth and *** minimise any loss of fitness due to ectoparasites,birds have developed a wide variety of defence mechanisms,potentially including hatching *** to the Tasty Chick Hypothesis(TCH),the cost of parasitism would be reduced if ectoparasites tend to eat on less immunocompetent nestlings,typically the last-hatched chick in asynchronously hatched broods,as they are in poor body *** predictions of the TCH are that immune capacity is lower in smaller nestlings than in larger ones and that parasites should provoke a more negative effect on smaller ***,we test these predictions in a population of Blue Tits(Cyanistes caeruleus)whose broods are parasitised by Hen Fleas(Ceratophyllus gallinae)and Blowflies(Protocalliphora azurea).We recorded the presence of both ectoparasites and analysed the immunocompetence(number of leucocytes per 10,000 erythrocytes and cutaneous immune response to phytohaemagglutinin)and body condition of smaller and larger nestlings within individual *** leucocyte count was higher in smaller nestlings than in larger ones,whereas the cutaneous immune response did not differ between smaller and larger *** nestlings,but not larger nestlings,had lower body mass when fleas were ***,by contrast,had no detectable negative effect on ***,our findings provide partial support to the *** immune capacity in smaller nestlings than in larger ones was not supported,but Hen Fleas seemed to negatively impact on smaller nestlings more than on larger ones.

Proline and Oxidative Metabolism in Young Pecan Trees Associated with Sulphate Accumulation

Pecan[Carya illinoinensis(Wangenh.)***.]is a deciduous tree whose fruits(nuts)are of high economic value and offer excellent nutritional ***,soils high in sulphates can limit its growth and *** with 5-year-old trees of‘Western Schley’pecan grown in soils high in sulphates,the levels of proline and oxidative metabolism were recorded in the *** showed that different levels of visible leaflet damage(‘sufficiency’,‘low’,‘moderate’or‘severe’)were associated with different levels of leaflet sulphates(mg kg^(−1)):‘sufficiency’(≤40),‘low’(41–60),‘moderate’(61–80)and‘severe’(80–100).‘Severe’sulphate damage was associated with significant reductions in chlorophyll(TChl)(17.04μg g^(−1)),relative water content(RWC)(50%)and leaf area(LA),and with increases in the concentrations of total carotenoids(TC)and proline(Prl).Increases were also observed in the activities of the oxidative metabolism enzymes:superoxide dismutase(SOD)(1.82 units min^(−1) g^(−1)),catalase(CAT)(2.86μmol H_(2)O_(2) min^(−1) g^(−1))and antioxidant capacity(AC)(87%DPPH inhibition).However,guaiacol peroxidase(GP)showed a reduction(2.97 nmol GSH min^(−1) g^(−1)).An inverse relationship was found between the sulphate concentration in the leaflets with respect to the evaluated parameters of TChl,TC,RWC,LA,AC,and *** synthesis and antioxidant enzymatic activity indicate salt stress in pecan leaflets in orchards irrigated with deep-well water high in sulphates.

Apparatus Prototype for Purposes of Teaching in Bio-digesters

A mathematical model is developed based on a simplified mechanism of anaerobic digestion. The main objective is to quantitatively analyze the digestion process to optimize operating conditions and maintenance of this equipment, which could be used to test different materials and be able to apply these results to the possible scaling to bio-digesters installed in the field. The experiments were carried out in a hybrid system bio-digester photovoltaic cells. The bio-digester is made of stainless steel with dimensions to treat an average of 10 kg of raw material and produce biogas from different organic materials. The reactor has been conditioned with temperature sensors, pressure and methane gas that allow monitoring the concentration of the gas and the conditions of operation during the time of digestion. The system has a photovoltaic array to provide the energy required to keep the temperature constant, The experiment was conducted using materials such as goat manure mixed with household waste, and various formulations of these materials were prepared. The experimental results were used to test the mathematical model.

Effects of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in Patients with Congenital Heart Disease

The beneficial effects of the programs of cardiac rehabilitation in adults are widely known. Nevertheless, the accomplishment of these programs in patients with congenital heart is scarcely developed. In this study, we want to evaluate the preliminary results of a program of cardiac rehabilitation. Patients and methods: Thirty-three patients aged 8 to 40 completed the rehabilitation program. Thirty-one of them had an operated congenital heart disease, one had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and another was a patient with arterial hypertension and obesity. Data before and after the program were compared. Results: Improvements were found in all of the measured parameters. We found a statistically significant difference in maximum heart rate, exercise duration, foreseen heart rate’s percentage and increase of metabolic equivalents. Twenty-seven of 33 patients noticed a significant improvement in their quality of life at the end of the program. Conclusion: Initial results seem to be encouraging and we consider the experience very positive since the program achieved an improvement in the functional capacity of our patients. In our opinion, these observations and the results of our study provide strong arguments for the incorporation of cardiac rehabilitation into the care of many patients with congenital heart disease.

Evaluating Oblique Shock Waves Characteristics on a Double-Wedge Airfoil

Numerical and experimental study to evaluate aerodynamic characteristics in supersonic ow over a double wedge airfoil is carried out using Fluent software and a supersonic wind tunnel, respectively. The Schlieren visualization method was also used to develop the experimental step of this study. The supersonic wind tunnel reached a proximately a Mach number of 1.8. The result got showed oblique shock waves visualization on double-wedge airfoil and the numerical simulation, the flow behavior as function of Mach number, pressure, temperature and density in the flow field on the computational model. The simulation allowed to observe the shock wave and the expansion fan in the leading and tailing edge of double-wedge airfoil. From the numerical and experimental comparison, an agreement at the shock wave angle and Mach number was observed, with a difference about 1.17% from the experimental results.
