Relationship between Physical Activity Level, Hepatic Steatosis Presence, Metabolic Syndrome and the Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes in Men

Cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory and metabolic disease represent 63% of all deaths worldwide and are considered the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Physical inactivity is considered a case of public health, and other behavioral and metabolic risk factors, according to WHO (2011), such as smoking, increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose, hypercholesterolemia, overweight and obesity. The Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent liver disease in adults, and can progress and be characterized as hepatic steatosis (HS) which is derived from the accumulation of lipids in hepatocytes, and histopathologic condition is more than 5% of the weight of liver. So, the purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the physical activity level and the hepatic steatosis presence, metabolic syndrome and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in men. We evaluated retrospectively medical records of 1399 men (40.7 ± 8.18 years old) who participated in the protocol of Preventive Health Check-up at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein from January to October 2011. According to the results, it is concluded that there is a positive association between low physical activity level and the presence of Hepatic steatosis. The results further demonstrate that, despite the high BMI, blood levels of the subjects remained unchanged. Even without a positive association between these variables, the results showed a high risk behavior for the development of diabetes mellitus type 2.

Factors affecting the dominance hierarchy dynamics in a hummingbird assemblage

Intra and in terspecific competiti on for n ectar play an imports nt role in hummingbird communities. Larger sized species usually exclude smaller species from the rich floral resources. However, it has been recently postulated that the competitive advantages of a large body size decline as the evolutionary distance between the contending species in creases. In this study, we analyzed dominance hierarchy dynamics in a hummingbird assemblage in central Mexico. By monitoring hummingbird territories established in three plant species through 1 year, we assessed the effects of energy within territories and the territory owners identity in the frequency of inter and intraspecific encounters. We also evaluated if these factors affect the dominance of larger species when they compete against smaller distantly related contenders. Our results show that their frequency of intraspecific encounters was related with the identity of the territory's owner. On the contrary, the frequency of interspecific encounters was related with both the territory and the identity of the territory's owner. We did not find a significant difference between the number of encounters dominated by larger and smaller species and their conte nders. However, the in crease in genetic dista nee between contenders was positively associated with a higher frequency of encounters dominated by small *** results showed that the ecological factors and evolutionary relationships among contenders play important roles in the dominance hierarchy dynamics.

Assessment of diagnostic capacity and decision-making based on the 2015 American Thyroid Association ultrasound classification system

BACKGROUND This study evaluates the American Thyroid Association(ATA)ultrasound(US)classification system for the initial assessment of thyroid nodules to determine if it indeed facilitates clinical *** To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic value of the ATA US classification system for the initial assessment of thyroid *** In accordance with the PRISMA statement for diagnostic test accuracy,we selected articles that evaluated the 2015 ATA US pattern guidelines using a diagnostic gold *** analyzed these cases using traditional diagnostic parameters,as well as the threshold approach to clinical decision-making and decision curve *** We reviewed 13 articles with 8445 thyroid nodules,which were classified according to 2015 ATA *** these,46.62%were *** cancer was found in any of the ATA benign pattern *** Bayesian analysis post-test probability for cancer in each classification was:(1)Very-low suspicion,0.85%;(2)Low,2.6%;(3)Intermediate,6.7%;and(4)High,40.9%.The net benefit(NB),expressed as avoided interventions,indicated that the highest capacity to avoid unnecessary fine needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB)in the patterns that we studied was 42,31,35,and 43 of every 100 *** NB calculation for a probability threshold of 11%for each of the ATA suspicion patterns studied is less than that of performing FNAB on all *** These three types of analysis have shown that only the ATA high-suspicion diagnostic pattern is clinically useful,in which case,FNAB should be ***,the curve decision analysis has demonstrated that using the ATA US risk patterns to decide which patients need FNAB does not provide a greater benefit than performing FNAB on all thyroid ***,it is likely that a better way to approach the assessment of thyroid nodules would be to perform FNAB on all non-cystic nodules,as the present analysis has shown the ATA risk patterns

Domestication of cranberry and blueberry began in the United States in the early 1800s and 1900s,respectively,and in part owing to their f lavors and health-promoting benefits are now cultivated and consumed *** industry continues to face a wide variety of production challenges(*** pressures),as well as a demand for higher-yielding cultivars with improved fruit quality ***,molecular tools to help guide breeding efforts for these species have been relatively limited compared with those for other high-value ***,we describe the construction and analysis of the first pangenome for both blueberry and *** analysis of these pangenomes revealed both crops exhibit great genetic diversity,including the presence-absence variation of 48.4%genes in highbush blueberry and 47.0%genes in *** genes,those not shared by all cultivars,are significantly enriched with molecular functions associated with disease resistance and the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites,including compounds previously associated with improving fruit quality *** discovery of thousands of genes,not present in the previous reference genomes for blueberry and cranberry,will serve as the basis of future research and as potential targets for future breeding *** pangenome,as a multiple-sequence alignment,as well as individual annotated genomes,are publicly available for analysis on the Genome Database for Vaccinium-a curated and integrated web-based relational ***,the core-gene predictions from the pangenomes will serve useful to develop a community genotyping platform to guide future molecular breeding efforts across the family.

CXCR4+ and SDF-1+ Bone Marrow Cells Are Mobilized into the Blood Stream in Acute Myocardial Infarction and Acute Ischemia

Cell therapy has shown beneficial effects on ventricular function and tissue regeneration in patients with acute and chronic myocardial infarction, although with diverse grades of variability in the results, possibly by proportion, subtype and cell cycle status. Objective: Identify and phenotypically characterize, via CXCR4 and SDF-1 expression, the bone marrow cell subpopulations that are mobilized into the bloodstream in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Acute Ischemia (AI) such as acute angina and Chronic Ischemia (CI) such as chronic stable angina, and also determine the cell cycle status of these cells. Method: Patients with AMI and AI were recruited in the ICCU, and patients with CI in the departments of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The quantification of cellular subpopulations was made by cytofluorometry with a FACS caliburcyto fluorometry (Becton Dickinson) with specific FITC-labeled anti human monoclonal antibodies against CD34, CD133, CD117, CD48, CXCR4, SDF-1 and Ki67 (Becton Dickinson). Serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 were determined by a sequential solid phase chemiluminescent assay performed in a SIEMENS IMMULITE 1000 Analyzer. Statistical analysis was made with the SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. A p value 3/ml) than that in AI (9.2 ± 1.3 × 103/ml) and CI (6.6 ± 1.1 × 103/ml) patients (p p = 0.22 to 0.39), but interestingly in AMI and AI patients, cells were CXCR4+ in almost half of these mobilized cells, although the proportion was significantly higher in AMI patients (46.8% ± 7.1% to 55.7% ± 6.3% vs 23% ± 1.6% to 28.4% ± 2.1%, p = 0.03 to 0.05). A similar behavior was observed with the Ki67 antibody (29.9% ± 2.1% to 36.1% ± 6.3% vs 10% ± 1.2% to 24% ± 1.1%, p = 0.001 to 0.05). Bivariate analysis of the results showed a significant correlation of the cell proportion in AMI but not in AI and CI patients (p = 0.001 to 0.05;0.12 to 0.87 and 0.17 to 0.92 respectively). Analysis of Two Clonal Lines(Embryogenic and Non-Embryogenic)of Agave fourcroydes Using AFLP and MSAP

Somatic embryogenesis is a very efficient way to propagate economically important plants;however, not all genotypes within a species can be propagated using this method, as a combined effect of both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms may be involved in the response. The aim of the present study was to perform a comparative analysis of the genetic differences through amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and the epigenetic differences through methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) of two Agave fourcroydes clonal lines, one highly embryogenic (K33) and the other non-embryogenic (K7). Genetic and epigenetic variabilities existed within each clonal line;however, the polymorphic profiles from the two marker systems allowed us to clearly distinguish the two clonal lines before somatic embryogenesis induction. During the induction, the changes detected were mainly 1) unmethylated fragments in the initial explants that were methylated during induction (methylation events) and 2) fragments with different methylation states in the initial explant that were unmethylated in some stages of the process (demethylation events). K33 showed greater dynamism in relation to methylation/demethylation events, while K7 presented the methylation events in a more constant range and at higher levels during all process.

Influence of Tomographic Slice Thickness and Field of View Variation on the Reproduction of Thin Bone Structures for Rapid Prototyping Purposes-An in Vitro Study

This study assessed the influence of acquisition parameters of tomographic volumes on the reproduction of thin bone structures for rapid prototyping purposes. Two parameters were investigated: Field of View (FOV) and Slice Thickness (ST). The specimen was comprised of five pairs of 0.6 mm, 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm thick cortical bone plates. The plates were stuck into utility wax;the first plate of the pair was in vertical position while the second plate was oblique to the first one. Forty-five tomographic images were captured and separated into 3 groups of fifteen images. Each group had a specific FOV: 180 mm;250 mm and 430 mm, respectively. Within each of these three groups, tomographic slice thickness was varied for every five of the fifteen slices. Acquisitions were carried out with STs of 1 mm, 2.5 mm and 5 mm. The Cyclops Medical Station software was used in the voxel-to-voxel analysis of radiologic density, reaching a total of 1350 assessed images. ST and FOV variation influenced the reproduction of thin bone walls, and FOV was shown to be a very important parameter. The larger the acquisition FOV, the more reduction in the number of voxels within the range of reconstruction for cortical bone in all of the bone plates. The visual analysis of the images of very thin bone walls showed that there could be a sharp drop in the radiologic density value in several adjacent voxels, resulting in areas which might not be reproduced in the reconstruction.

Given g∈L 2(R n ), we consider irregular wavelet for the form $\left\{ {\lambda ^{\frac{n}{2}} g\left( {\lambda _j x - kb} \right)} \right\}_{j\varepsilon zj\varepsilon z^n } ,where\;\lambda _j $ > 0 and b > 0. Sufficient conditions for the wavelet system to constitute a frame for L 2(R n ) are given. For a class of functions g∈L 22(R n ) we prove that certain growth conditions on {λ j } will frames, and that some other types of sequences exclude the frame property. We also give a sufficient condition for a Gabor system $\left\{ {e^{zrib\left( {j,x} \right)} g\left( {x - \lambda _k } \right)} \right\}_{j\varepsilon z^n ,k\varepsilon z} $ to be a frame.
