This paper describes an empirical study aiming at identifying the main differences between different logistic regression models and collision data aggregation methods that are commonly applied in road safety literature for modeling collision severity. In particular, the research compares three popular multilevel logistic models （i.e., sequential binary logit models, ordered logit models, and multinomial logit models） as well as three data aggregation methods （i.e., occupant based, vehicle based, and collision based）. Six years of collision data （2001-2006） from 31 highway routes from across the province of Ontario, Canada were used for this analysis. It was found that a multilevel multinomial logit model has the best fit to the data than the other two models while the results obtained from occupant-based data are more reliable than those from vehicle- and collision-based data. More importantly, while generally consistent in terms of factors that were found to be significant between different models and data aggregation methods, the effect size of each factor differ sub- stantially, which could have significant implications forevaluating the effects of different safety-related policies and countermeasures.

This paper presents a driver behavior analysis using microscopic video data measures including vehicle speed, lane-changing ratio, and time to collision. An analytical framework was developed to evaluate the effect of adverse winter weather conditions on highway driving behavior based on automated （computer） and manual methods. The research was conducted through two case studies. The first case study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of applying an au- tomated approach to extracting driver behavior data based on 15 video recordings obtained in the winter 2013 at three dif- ferent locations on the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, Canada. A comparison was made between the automated approach and manual approach, and issues in collecting data using the automated approach under winter conditions were identified. The second case study was based on high quality data collected in the winter 2014, at a location on Highway 25 in Montreal, Canada. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the automated analytical framework in analyzing driver behavior, as well as evaluating the impact of adverse winter weather conditions on driver behavior. This approach could be applied to evaluate winter maintenance strategies and crash risk on highways during adverse winter weather conditions.

Alternative technologies have emerged to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of traditional commuter rail systems powered by diesel. Even larger reductions can be obtained with energy production from renewable resources. This paper uses the commuter rail system in Montreal, Quebec, as a case study for implementing alternative technologies, namely, complete electrification of the network (only one of the existing five lines is electrified) and hydrogen fuel cell-powered trains. It is important to note that the main source of electricity generation in Quebec is hydropower which is offered at a relatively low cost. Several criteria were considered to determine the most suitable alternative including GHG emissions from operation and fuel production, operation and capital costs, and technological and commercial viability. Electrification of the commuter rail system would decrease annual emissions by 98% which is more than 27,000 tons. The GHG reductions for hydrogen trains are lower than electric trains but still substantial. The operation costs favor the electrification scenario;however, the high costs of electrical infrastructure make hydrogen trains more competitive since additional infrastructure is unnecessary. However, hydrogen trains remain a new and unproven technology;uncertainties associated with it should be settled before full implementation.

Improvement of nutritional and organoleptic quality of fruits is a key goal in current strawberry breeding *** ratio of sugars to acids is a determinant factor contributing to fruit liking,although different sugars and acids contribute in varying degrees to this complex trait.A segregating f1 population of 95 individuals,previously characterized for several fruit quality characters,was used to map during 2 years quantitative trait loci(QTL)for 50 primary metabolites,L-ascorbic acid(L-AA)and other related traits such as soluble solid content(SSC),titratable acidity(TA),and pH.A total of 133 mQTL were detected above the established thresholds for 44 *** 12.9%of QTL were detected in the 2 years,suggesting a large environmental influence on primary metabolite *** objective of this study was the identification of key metabolites that were associated to the overall variation in SSC and *** it was observed in previous studies,a number of QTL controlling several metabolites and traits were co-located in homoeology group V(HG V).mQTL controlling a large variance in raffinose,sucrose,succinic acid,and L-AA were detected in approximate the same chromosomal regions of different homoeologous linkage groups belonging to HG *** genes for selected mQTL are proposed based on their co-localization,on the predicted function,and their differential gene expression among contrasting f1 progeny ***-seq analysis from progeny lines contrasting in L-AA content detected 826 differentially expressed genes and identified Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase,faM6PI1,as a candidate gene contributing to natural variation in ascorbic acid in strawberry fruit.

Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation (TES) was applied to a group of volunteer patients suffering from Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), in order to investigate the effect of TES in Visual Acuity (VA). 28 partial blind patients with diagnosis of classic RP, Usher syndrome I and/or II were stimulated transcornealy, during a period of 52 weeks using a non conventional waveform, only in the lowest visually capable eye. The proposed waveform has been modeled from the natural response of human retina and delivered by means of an adaptive generator designed and built for tissue stimulation. Statistical results show the improvement of average VA or at least the contention of the disease natural progress. Categorized analysis of results indicates the same effect that if the age of patients, time since diagnosis and genetic disorder variation (classic RP, Usher syndrome I and/or II) are considered, in this case clinical and electrophysiological follow-up parameters were statistically analyzed in order to know the effect of TES. General results yield an improvement of 48.15% in the average of VA for stimulated eyes against an average degreasing of -8.06% in the same scale, with respect to their basal condition before the start of the experiment.

Purpose: This study aims to compare adolescents' cardiometabolic risk score through an integrative classification of physical activity(PA),which involves the combination of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) and sedentary behavior(SB).Methods: A cross-sectional study derived from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Cross-Sectional Study database(2006-2008) was conducted in adolescents(n = 548; boys, 47.3%; 14.7 ± 1.2 years) from 10 European cities. MVPA and SB were objectively measured using accelerometry. Adolescents were divided into 4 categories according to MVPA(meeting or not meeting the international recommendations) and the median of SB time(above or below sex-and age-specific median) as follows: High-SB & Inactive, Low-SB & Inactive,High-SB & Active, and Low-SB & Active. A clustered cardiometabolic risk score was computed using the homeostatic model assessment, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, sum 4 skinfolds, and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRf).Analyses of covariance were performed to discern differences on cardiometabolic risk scores among PA categories and each health ***: The cardiometabolic risk score was lower in adolescents meeting the MVPA recommendation and with less time spent in SB in comparison to the high-SB & Inactive group(p fference in cardiometabolic risk score was established between High-SB or Low-SB groups in inactive adolescents. It is important to note that CRf was the only variable that showed a significant modification(higher)when children were compared from the category of physically inactive with "active" but not from high-to ***: Being physically active is the most significant and protective outcome in adolescents to reduce cardiometabolic risk. Lower SB does not exhibit a significant and extra beneficial difference.
