Phosphorus f.actions and sorption dynamics in the sediments of.two Ca-SO4 water reservoirs in the central Argentine Andes

Phosphorus（P） f.actionation and sorption behavior were studied in the sediments of.two calcium-sulf.te(Ca-SO4: Ca2+170 mg L-1; SO42-400 mg L-1) water reservoirs in the southern central Argentine Andes-El Carrizal Reservoir（ECR）,which stratif.es in summer and El Nihuil Reservoir（ENR）,which is vertically mixed throughout the year. Sediment size classes ref.ected the lithology of.both basins and the reservoirs relative location: ECR（downstream f.om a valley adjacent to a mountain environment） had higher clay proportions while the sand f.action was more important in ENR（just next to a mountain environment）.In both reservoirs, the chemical composition revealed low alteration and calcium enrichment. Total P content was relatively high(1.1-1.6 mg P kg-1dry weight) as expected f.om the contribution of.marine f.rmations. P f.actionation was dominated by Ca-P（ECR, 69% and ENR, 63%） f.llowed by organic-P（23%）in summer-anoxic ECR and by iron/aluminum（f./Al）-P（27%） in oxic ENR. Batch experiments showed that sorption behavior in ECR had a typical Langmuir isotherm plot while in ENR that model f.tted only at low dissolved P values(f./Al-P content in anoxic（ECR） vs. oxic（ENR） sediments results f.om the P released f.om iron-bound phosphorus due to sulf.te reduction-f.rrous sulf.de f.rmation in an anoxic environment. This condition should enable ECR sediments to adsorb P into f.esh oxidized iron,and ENR sediments to co-precipitate P with calcium due to f./Al-P saturation, as observed in batch experiments. This paper constitutes the f.rst description of.phosphorus content and dynamics in reservoir sediments in arid central western Argentina, where water sulf.te concentrations are naturally high due to basin lithology.

Ef.lorescent nanophases(NPs) are f.und as a transitory accumulation of.potentially hazardous elements(PHEs),particularly in tropical climates. The central objective of.this study was to investigate the distribution of.PHEs with NPs through the evaporative f.rmation structures(Ef.) of.enormously PHEs-rich coal-mine drainages(CMD). The Ef. were studied in natural coal mine drainage f.r f.ve months in order to determine their geochemical and ecological structures and to assess their position in the reduction of.PHEs in nature. The largest coal-f.red power plant in South America, located in south Brazil, is used as an example of.such a problem. In this work, a novel methodology f.r the analysis of.PHEs in CMD precipitates is proposed f.r this af.ected coal *** analytical method, combining X-Ray Dif.raction(XRD) and advanced electron microscopies, shows the importance of.nanomineralogy in understanding dif.erent circumstances of.coal contamination. Several ultraf.nenanoparticles(UNPs) were identif.ed in the sampled soils and river sediments together with the PHEs. A decrease in PHEs was identif.ed in association with UNPs. However, f.rther investigations are required with regard to the mobility of.PHEs in water, atmosphere, soils, and sediments. The EPS was thoroughly studied, acquiring suitable understanding with investigational f.cts f.r Ca and f.-sulphates, pickeringite, and several amorphous phases.

A paper, ＂Non-existence of.Shilnikov chaos in continuous-time systems＂ was published in the journal Applied Mathematics and Mechanics （English Edition）. The authors gave suf.icient conditions f.r the non-existence of.homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits in an nth-order autonomous system. Unf.rtunately, we show in this comment that the proof.presented is erroneous and the result is invalid. We also provide two counterexamples of.the wrong criterion stated by the authors.

Coal is the most abundant f.ssil f.el in the world. Because of.the growth of.coal mining, coal-f.red power plants and coal-burning industries, the increase of.the emission of.particulates(coarse, f.ne or ultraf.ne)is of.great concern. There is a relationship between increasing human morbidity and mortality and progressive environmental air pollution caused by these types of.particles. Thus, the knowledge of.the physico-chemical composition and ambient concentrations of.coal-derived nanoparticles will improve pollution control strategy. Given the current importance of.this area of.research, the advanced characterization of.this coal combustion-derived nanoparticles/nanominerals as well as hazardous elements is likely to be one of.the hottest research f.elds in coming days. In this review, we try to compile the existing knowledge on coal-derived nanoparticles/nanominerals and discuss the advanced level of.characterization techniques f.r f.ture research. This review also provides some of.aspects of.health risks associated with exposure to ambient nanoparticles. In addition, the presence of.some of.the hazardous elements in coal and coal combustion activities is also reviewed.

This paper describes an empirical study aiming at identif.ing the main dif.erences between dif.erent logistic regression models and collision data aggregation methods that are commonly applied in road saf.ty literature f.r modeling collision severity. In particular, the research compares three popular multilevel logistic models （i.e., sequential binary logit models, ordered logit models, and multinomial logit models） as well as three data aggregation methods （i.e., occupant based, vehicle based, and collision based）. Six years of.collision data （2001-2006） f.om 31 highway routes f.om across the province of.Ontario, Canada were used f.r this analysis. It was f.und that a multilevel multinomial logit model has the best f.t to the data than the other two models while the results obtained f.om occupant-based data are more reliable than those f.om vehicle- and collision-based data. More importantly, while generally consistent in terms of.f.ctors that were f.und to be signif.cant between dif.erent models and data aggregation methods, the ef.ect size of.each f.ctor dif.er sub- stantially, which could have signif.cant implications f.revaluating the ef.ects of.dif.erent saf.ty-related policies and countermeasures.

In analyzing gene f.milies in the whole-genome sequences available f.r O. sativa （AA）, O. glaberrima （AA）, and O. brachyantha （f.）, we observed large size expansions in the AA genomes compared to f. genomes f.r the superf.milies f.box and NB-ARC, and f.ve additional f.milies： the Aspartic proteases, BTB/POZ proteins （BTB）, Glutaredoxins, Trypsin a-amylase inhibitor proteins, and Zf.Dof.proteins. Their evolutionary dynamic was investigated to understand how and why such important size variations are observed between these closely related species. We show that expansions resulted f.om both amplif.cation, largely by tandem duplications, and contraction by gene losses. f.r the f.box and NB-ARC gene f.milies, the genes conserved in all species were under strong purif.ing selection while expanded orthologous genes were under more relaxed purif.ing selection. In f.box, NB-ARC, and BTB, the expanded groups were enriched in genes with little evidence of.expression, in comparison with conserved groups. We also detected 87 loci under positive selection in the expanded groups. These results show that most of.the duplicated copies in the expanded groups evolve neutrally af.er duplication because of.f.nctional redundancy but a f.action of.these genes were preserved f.llowing neof.nctionalization. Hence, the lineage-specif.c expansions observed between Oryza species were partly driven by directional selection.
