Direct seawater splitting has emerged as a popular and promising research direction for synthesising clean,green,non-polluting,and sustainable hydrogen energy without depending on high-purity water in the face of the world’s shortage of fossil ***,efficient seawater splitting is hindered by slow kinetics caused by the ultra-low conductivity and the presence of bacteria,microorganisms,and stray ions in ***,producing hydrogen on an industrial scale is challenging due to the high production *** present review addresses these challenges from the catalyst point of view,namely,that designing catalysts with high catalytic activity and stability can directly affect the rate and effect of seawater *** the ion transfer perspective,designing membranes can block harmful ions,improving the stability of seawater *** the energy point of view,mixed seawater systems and self-powered systems also provide new and low-energy research systems for seawater ***,ideas and directions for further research on direct seawater splitting in the future are pointed out,with the aim of achieving low-cost and high-efficiency hydrogen production.

Identifying home ranges—those areas traversed by individuals in their normal foraging,mating,and parenting activities—is an important aspect of cetacean *** these ranges facilitates identification of resource use and *** and humpback whales occur in Antarctica during the austral summer,but information regarding their home ranges is *** opportunistically collected whale sighting data from eight consecutive summer seasons spanning 2010–2017,we approximate the home ranges of humpback and fin whales around Drake Passage(DRA),West of Antarctic Peninsula(WAP),South Shetland Islands(SSI),an area northwest of the Weddell Sea(WED),and around the South Orkney Islands(SOI).Approximate home ranges are identified using Kernel Density Estimation(KDE).Most fin whales occurred north and northwest of the SOI,which suggests that waters near these islands support concentrations of this *** humpback whales were observed around the SSI,but unlike fin whales,their distributions were highly variable in other *** suggests spatial segregation in areas where both species exist such as SOI,SSI,and *** redundancy analysis(pRDA)suggests that the distributions of these species are more affected by spatial variables(latitude,longitude)than by local scale variables such as sea surface temperature and *** study presents a visual approximation of the home ranges of fin and humpback whales,and identifies variation in the effects of space and environmental variables on the distributions of these whales at different spatial scales.

In non-cyanogenic species, the main source of cyanide derives from ethylene and camalexin biosyntheses. In mitochondria, cyanide is a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome c oxidase and is metabolized by the β-cyanoalanine synthase CYS-C1, catalyzing the conversion of cysteine and cyanide to hydrogen sulfide and β-cyanoalanine. The hydrogen sulfide released also inhibits the cytochrome c oxidase and needs to be detoxified by the O-acetylserine（thiol）lyase mitochondrial isoform, OAS-C, which catalyzes the incorporation of sulfide to O-acetylserine to produce cysteine, thus generating a cyclic pathway in the mitochondria. The loss of functional OAS-C isoforms causes phenotypic characteristics very similar to the loss of the CYS-C1 enzyme, showing defects in root hair formation. Genetic complementation with the OAS-Cgene rescues the impairment of root hair elongation, restoring the wild-type phenotype. The mitochondria compromise their capacity to properly detoxify cyanide and the resulting sulfide because the latter cannot re-assimilate into cysteine in the oas-c null mutant. Consequently, we observe an accumulation of sulfide and cyanide and of the alternative oxidase, which is unable to prevent the production of reactive oxygen species probably due to the accumulation of both toxic molecules. Our results allow us to suggest that the significance of OAS-C is related to its role in the proper sulfide and cyanide detoxification in mitochondria.

The use of carbon from waste biomass has the potential to buffer the drawbacks of Li-S batteries and improve their overall performance. Chrome-Tanned-LeatherShavings(CTLS) are undesirable wastes, highly available for transformation into porous carbon. Microwave activation is an efficient state-of-the-art procedure to obtain unique porous structures and nitrogen incorporation can improve the performance of porous carbons. This study proposes the transformation of CTLS into a microwave activated porous carbon, and then was modified to introduce nitrogen. A microporous activated carbon with a specific surface area of 556 m2g-1 with honeycomb-like structure was obtained. Both urea thermal decomposition and ethanolamine impregnation improves the nitrogen and amine presence of surface groups. However,the results indicated that only urea treatment was effective in improving the initial capacity of the cell(1363 mAhg-1), which is probably linked with the sorption of long-chain polysulfides. This investigation confirms that it is possible to obtain carbon materials from CTLS, for use as sulfur-host cathodes in Li-S batteries, and improve their performance with urea thermal decomposition. Furthermore, a Radial basis function neural network was fitted to provide statistical support to the experimental results. The trained model corroborated the importance of nitrogen content of the carbons in the discharge capacity of the cells.

The biochemical and molecular processes involved in the habituation of maize cells to growth in the presence of the cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor dichlobenil （DCB） were investigated. DCB affects the synthesis of cellulose both in active and stationary growth phases and alters the expression of several CesA genes. Of these, ZmCesA5 and ZmCesA7 seem to play a major role in habituating cells to growth in the presence of DCB. As a consequence of the reduction in cellulose, the expression of several genes involved in the synthesis of hydroxycinnamates is increased, resulting in cell walls with higher levels of ferulic and p-coumaric acids. A proteomic analysis revealed that habituation to DCB is linked to modifications in several metabolic pathways. Finally, habituated cells present a reduction in glutathione S-transferase detoxifying activity and antioxidant activities. Plant cell adaptation to the disturbance of such a crucial process as cellulose biosynthesis requires changes in several metabolic networks, in order to modify cell wall architecture and metabolism, and survive in the presence of the inhibitor. Some of these modifications are described in this paper.

The habituation of cell cultures to cellulose biosynthesis inhibitors such as dichlobenil （DCB） represents a valu- able tool to improve our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in plant cell wall structural plasticity. Maize cell lines habituated to lethal concentrations of DCB were able to grow through the acquisition of a modified cell wall in which cellulose was partially replaced by a more extensive network of arabinoxylans. The aim of this work was to investigate the phenolic metabolism of non-habituated and DCB-habituated maize cell cultures. Maize cell cultures were fed [14C]cinnamate and the fate of the radioactivity in different intra-protoplasmic and wall-localized fractions throughout the culture cycle was analyzed by autoradiography and scintillation counting. Non-habituated and habituated cultures did not markedly differ in their ability to uptake exogenous [14C]cinnamic acid. However, interesting differences were found in the radiolabeling of low- and high-Mr metabolites. Habituated cultures displayed a higher number and amount of radiola-beled low-Mr compounds, which could act as reserves later used for polysaccharide feruloylation. DCB-habituated cultures were highly enriched in esterified [14C]dehydrodiferulates and larger coupling products. In conclusion, an extensive and early cross-linking of hydroxycinnamates was observed in DCB-habituated cultures, probably strengthening their cellulose-deficient walls.

Plant communities are shaped by multiple factors along environmental gradients;however,studies are limited on how environmental filtering drives community composition and species richness on tropical *** evaluate the influence of altitude and climatic variables related to temperature and precipitation on plant community composition and species richness on Brazilian *** assume as a premise that both climate and altitude would induce changes on plant community composition and species richness at the local *** used plant inventory data from 370 sampling units across four inselberg sites in the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo State,south-eastern *** tested the univariate and multivariate effects of altitude and climate variables on community composition and species richness with multiple *** in species richness between inselbergs were evaluated using sample-based data to estimate rarefaction and extrapolation *** addition,differences in species composition and taxonomic beta diversity were examined via novel frequency-based metrics.A contrasting climate pattern was observed between the inselberg sites,with south sites being wet compared to the dry conditions found in northern *** richness by rarefaction showed a similar pattern within regional sites;however,there were marked differences between *** richness and beta diversity showed significant differences among sites,with higher values in southern sites than in northern *** a multi-model comparison between inselberg sites,altitude significantly influenced community composition and species richness and explained more variance than climate *** finding suggested that climate could act to some extent on these tropical inselbergs;however,altitude was a better predictor of plant community composition and species richness at the local level.

Mastabol induced acute cholestasis: A case report

A 26-year-old male presented with three weeks of jaundice after the self-initiation of the injectable anabolic steroid, Mastabol [Dromastanolone Di-Propionate (17 beta-Hydroxy-2alpha-methyl-5alpha-androstan-3one propionate)]. He reported dark urine, light stools, and pruritus. He denied abdominal pain, intravenous drug use, intranasal cocaine, blood transfusions, newly placed tattoos, or sexually transmitted diseases. He used alcohol sparingly. Physical exam revealed jaundice with deep scleral icterus. The liver was palpable 2 cm below the right costal margin with no ascites. The peak bilirubin was 23.6 mg/dL, alkaline phosphatase was 441 units/L, and aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase were 70 units/L and 117 units/L respectively. A working diagnosis of acute intrahepatic cholestasis was made. Liver biopsy revealed a centrilobular insult with neutrophilic infiltrates and Ito cell hyperplasia consistent with acute drug induced cholestasis. The patient' s clinical symptoms resolved and his liver enzymes, bilirubin, and alkaline phosphatase normalized. Anabolic steroids with 17 alpha carbon substitutions have been associated with a bland variety of cholestatic injury with little hepatocellular injury. Cholestasis, under these circumstances, may be secondary to the binding of drugs to canalicular membrane transporters, accumulation of toxic bile acids from canalicular pump failure, or genetic defects in canalicular transport proteins. Mastabol is an injectable, 17 beta hydroxyl compound with no alpha alkyl groups at the 17 carbon position. As such, it has been reported to have little potential toxic effects on the liver. This is the first known reported case of Mastabolinduced cholestatic liver injury. It highlights the need for physicians to consider such widely available substances when faced with hepatic injury of unclear etiology.

Cirrhosis is considered a growing cause of morbidity and mortality,which represents a significant public health ***,there is no effective treatment to reverse *** primarily centers on addressing the underlying liver condition,monitoring,and managing portal hypertension-related complications,and evaluating the potential for liver transplantation in cases of decompensated cirrhosis,marked by rapid progression and the emer-gence of complications like variceal bleeding,hepatic encephalopathy,ascites,malnutrition,and ***,a prevalent complication across all disease stages,is often underdiagnosed in cirrhosis due to the complexities of nutritional assessment in patients with fluid retention and/or obesity,despite its crucial impact on *** emphasis has been placed on the collaboration of nutritionists within hepatology and Liver transplant teams to deliver compre-hensive care,a practice that has shown to improve *** review covers appropriate screening and assessment methods for evaluating the nutritional status of this population,diagnostic approaches for malnutrition,and context-specific nutrition *** also discusses evidence-based recommendations for supplementation and physical exercise,both essential elements of the standard care provided to cirrhotic patients.
