Selective and constructive mechanisms contribute to neural circuit formation in the barrel cortex of the developing rat

The cellular strategy leading to formation of neuronal circuits in the rodent barrel cortex is still a matter of controversy. Both selective and constructive mechanisms have been proposed. The selective mechanism involves an overproduction of neuronal processes and synapses followed by activity dependent pruning. Conversely, a constructive mechanism would increase the number of axons, dendrites, and synapses during development to match functionality. In order to discern the contributions of these two mechanisms in establishing a neuronal circuit in the somatosensory cortex, morphometric analysis of dendritic and axonal arbor growth was performed. Also, the number of synapses was followed by electron microscopy during the first month of life. We observed that axonal and dendritic arbors retracted distal branches, and elongated proximal branches, resulting in increased arbor complexity. This neuronal remodeling was accompanied by the steady increase in the number of synapses within barrel hollows. Similarly, the content of molecular markers for dendrites, axons and synapses also increased during this period. Finally, cytochrome oxidase activity rose with age in barrels indicating that the arbors became more complex while synapse density and metabolic demands increased. Our results support the simultaneous use of both selective and constructive mechanisms in establishing the barrel cortex circuitry.

Ultrafast laser pulses provide unique tools to manipulate magnetization dynamics at femtosecond timescales,where the interaction of the electric field usually dominates over the magnetic *** proposals using structured laser beams have demonstrated the possibility to produce regions where intense oscillating magnetic fields are isolated from the electric *** these conditions,we show that technologically feasible tesla-scale circularly polarized high-frequency magnetic fields induce purely precessional nonlinear magnetization *** fundamental result not only opens an avenue in the study of laser-induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics,but also sustains technological implications as a route to promote all-optical non-thermal magnetization dynamics both at shorter timescales-towards the subfemtosecond regime-and at THz frequencies.

In general terms,the acute inflammatory reaction in conditions of infection or tissue damage is a response of the immune system to cope with survival and return to ***,the reaction is initiated by edema followed by the progressive accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMN)and monocytes that differentiate into macrophages,with production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes(e.g.,LTB4)and prostaglandins(e.g.,PGE2,PGI2,PGF2),which in excess may progress to chronic inflammation(1).Considering that the acute inflammatory response is a protective and self-limited phenomenon,its resolution is an active programmed reaction that is set in by specific pro-resolving mediators(SPMs),which are derived from n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(n-3 PUFAs).

针对低矿化度水与表面活性剂混注工艺提高原油采收率机理不清的问题,采用墨西哥东南部砂岩油藏储集层岩心和稠油样品,开展了加入表面活性剂和未加入表面活性剂条件下的低矿化度水岩心驱替实验,并结合层析分析方法,研究驱替过程中岩心内部的变化。结果显示,低矿化度水和表面活性剂混注工艺能够提高采收率,实验中低矿化度水驱与混注工艺提高岩心采收率11.4个百分点。低矿化度水驱使得岩心中产生多种现象,例如润湿性改变、pH值变化、离子交换、矿物溶解、微粒运移和原油组分变化等。在表面活性剂驱替过程中,界面张力降低和润湿性改变是提高采收率的主要机理。以往研究认为低矿化度水驱提高原油采收率需要储集层中存在高岭石或原油为高酸值原油,但驱替实验结果表明这两点并非必要条件。

Gastroenterology case report of mesalazine-induced cardiopulmonary hypersensitivity

Mesalazine is a 5-aminosalicylic acid derivative that has been widely used to treat patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that mesalazine has a very low rate of adverse drug reactions and is well tolerated by patients. However, a few cases of pulmonary and cardiac disease related to mesalazine have been reported in the past, though infrequently, preventing clinicians from diagnosing the conditions early. We describe the case of a 32-yearold man with ulcerative colitis who was admitted with a two-month history of persistent fever following mesalazine treatment initiated 14 mo earlier. At the time of admission, mesalazine dose was increased from 1.5 to 3.0 g/d, and antibiotic therapy was started with no improvement. Three weeks after admission, the patient developed dyspnea, non-productive cough, and chest pain. Severe eosinophilia was detected in laboratory tests, and a computed tomography scan revealed interstitial infiltrates in both lungs, as well as a large pericardial effusion. The bronchoalveolar lavage reported a CD4/CD8 ratio of 0.5, and an increased eosinophil count. Transbronchial biopsy examination showed a severe eosinophilic infiltrate of the lung tissue. Mesalazine-induced cardiopulmonary hypersensitivity was suspected after excluding other possible etiologies. Consequently, mesalazine treatment was suspended, and corticosteroid therapy was initiated, resulting in resolution of symptoms and radiologic abnormalities. We conclude that mesalazine-induced pulmonary and cardiac hypersensitivity should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained cardiopulmonary symptoms and radiographic abnormalities in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Hybrid low salinity water and surfactant process for enhancing heavy oil recovery

Combining low salinity water (LSW) with surfactants has an enormous potential for enhancing oil recovery processes. However, there is no consensus about the mechanisms involved, in addition to the fact that several studies have been conducted in model systems, while experiments with rocks and reservoir fluids are scarce. This study presents a core-flooding experiment of LSW injection, with and without surfactant, using the core and heavy oil samples obtained from a sandstone reservoir in southeastern Mexico. The effluents and the crude oil obtained at each stage were analyzed. The study was complemented by tomographic analysis. The results revealed that LSW injection and hybrid process with surfactants obtained an increase of 11.4 percentage points in recovery factor. Various phenomena were caused by LSW flooding, such as changes in wettability and pH, ion exchange, mineral dissolution, detachment of fines and modification of the hydrocarbon profile. In the surfactant flooding, the reduction of interfacial tension and alteration of wettability were the main mechanisms involved. The findings of this work also showed that the conditions believed to be necessary for enhanced oil recovery with LSW, such as the presence of kaolinite or high acid number oil, are not relevant.

Celiac disease （CD） is a common autoimmune disorder, induced by the intake of gluten proteins present in wheat, barley and rye. Contrary to common belief, this disorder is a protean systemic disease, rather than merely a pure digestive alteration. CD is closely associated with genes that code HLA-Ⅱ antigens, mainly of DQ2 and DQ8 classes. Previously, it was considered to be a rare childhood disorder, but is actually considered a frequent condition, present at any age, which may have multiple complications. Tissue transglutaminase-2 （tTG）, appears to be an important component of this disease, both, in its pathogenesis and diagnosis. Active CD is characterized by intestinal and/or extra-intestinal symptoms, villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia, and strongly positive tTG auto-antibodies. The duodenal biopsy is considered to be the ＂gold standard＂ for diagnosis, but its practice has significant limitations in its interpretation, especially in adults. Occasionally, it results in a false-negative because of patchy mucosal changes and the presence of mucosal villous atrophy is often more severe in the proximal jejunum, usually not reached by endoscopic biopsies. CD is associated with increased rates of several diseases, such as iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, dermatitis herpetiformis, several neurologic and endocrine diseases, persistent chronic hypertransami-nasemia of unknown origin, various types of cancer and other autoimmune disorders. Treatment of CD dictates a strict, life-long gluten-free diet, which results in remission for most individuals, although its effect on some associated extraintestinal manifestations remains to be established.

Methylation of DAPK and THBS1 genes in esophageal gastric-type columnar metaplasia

AIM: To explore methylation of DAPK, THBS1, CDH-1, and p14 genes, and Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) status in individuals harboring esophageal columnar ***: Distal esophageal mucosal samples obtained by endoscopy and histologically diagnosed as gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia, were studied thoroughly. DNA was extracted from paraffin blocks, and methylation status of deathassociated protein kinase(DAPK), thrombospondin-1(THBS1), cadherin-1(CDH1), and p14 genes, was examined using a methyl-sensitive polymerase chain reaction(MS-PCR) and sodium bisulfite modification protocol. H. pylori cag A status was determined by ***: In total, 68 subjects(33 females and 35 males), with a mean age of 52 years, were included. H. pylori cag A positive was present in the esophageal gastric-type metaplastic mucosa of 18 individuals. DAPK, THSB1, CDH1, and p14 gene promoters were methylated by MS-PCR in 40(58.8%), 33(48.5%), 46(67.6%), and 23(33.8%) cases of the 68 esophageal samples. H. pyloristatus was associated with methylation of DAPK(P = 0.003) and THBS1(P = 0.019).CONCLUSION: DNA methylation occurs in cases of gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia of the esophagus, and this modification is associated with H. pylori cag A positive infection.

Intraoperative laparoscopic complications for urological cancer procedures

AIM: To structure the rate of intraoperative complications that requires an intraoperative or perioperative resolution. METHODS: We perform a literature review of Medline database. The research was focused on intraoperative laparoscopic procedures inside the field of urological oncology. General rate of perioperative complications in laparoscopic urologic surgery is described to be around 12.4%. Most of the manuscripts published do not make differences between pure intraoperative, intraoperative with postoperative consequences and postoperative complications. RESULTS: We expose a narrative statement of complications, possible solutions and possible preventions for most frequent retroperitoneal and pelvic laparoscopic surgery. We expose the results with the following order: retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery(radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy and adrenalectomy) and pelvic laparoscopic surgery(radical prostatectomy and radical cystectomy).CONCLUSION: Intraoperative complications vary from different series. More scheduled reports should be done in order to better understand the real rates of complications.
