Bacterial infection of implanted scaffolds may have fatal consequences and,in combination with the emergence of multidrug bacterial resistance,the development of advanced antibacterial biomaterials and constructs is of great interest.Since decades ago,metals and their ions had been used to minimize bacterial infection risk and,more recently,metal-based nanomaterials,with improved antimicrobial properties,have been advocated as a novel and tunable alternative.A comprehensive review is provided on how metal ions and ion nanoparticles have the potential to decrease or eliminate unwanted bacteria.Antibacterial mechanisms such as oxidative stress induction,ion release and disruption of biomolecules are currently well accepted.However,the exact antimicrobial mechanisms of the discussed metal compounds remain poorly understood.The combination of different metal ions and surface decorations of nanoparticles will lead to synergistic effects and improved microbial killing,and allow to mitigate potential side effects to the host.Starting with a general overview of antibacterial mechanisms,we subsequently focus on specific metal ions such as silver,zinc,copper,iron and gold,and outline their distinct modes of action.Finally,we discuss the use of these metal ions and nanoparticles in tissue engineering to prevent implant failure.

Background The Ibizan Hound is a canine breed native to the Mediterranean region,where leishmaniasis is an endemic zoonosis.Several studies indicate a low prevalence of this disease in Ibizan Hound dogs,whereas other canine breeds present a high prevalence.However,the underlying molecular mechanisms still remain unknown.The aim of this work is to analyse the relationship between serum levels of cytokines and the genomic profiles in two canine breeds,Ibizan Hound(resistant canine breed model)and Boxer(susceptible canine breed model).Methods In this study,we analyse the haplotypes of genes encoding cytokines related to immune response of Leishmania infantum infection in twenty-four Boxers and twenty-eight Ibizan Hounds apparently healthy using CanineHD DNA Analysis BeadChip including 165,480 mapped positions.The haplo.glm extension of haplo.score was used to perform a General Linear Model(GLM)regression to estimate the magnitude of individual haplotype effects within each cytokine.Results Mean levels of interferon gamma(IFN-γ),interleukin 2(IL-2)and IL-18 in Boxer dogs were 0.19±0.05 ng/ml,46.70±4.54 ng/ml,and 36.37±30.59 pg/ml,whereas Ibizan Hound dogs present 0.49±0.05 ng/ml,64.55±4.54 ng/ml,and 492.10±31.18 pg/ml,respectively.The GLM regression shows fifteen haplotypes with statistically significant effect on the cytokine serum levels(P<0.05).The more relevant are IL6-CGAAG and IFNG-GCA haplotypes,which increase and decrease the IL-2,IL-8 and IFN-γserum levels,respectively.Conclusions Haplotypes in the IFNG and IL6 genes have been correlated to serum levels of IFN-γ,IL-2 and IL-18,and a moderate effect has been found on IL8 haplotype correlated to IL-8 and IL-18 serum levels.The results indicate that the resistance to L.infantum infection could be a consequence of certain haplotypes with a high frequency in the Ibizan Hound dog breed,while susceptibility to the disease would be related to other specific haplotypes,with high frequency in Boxer.Future studies are needed to elucidate whether these differences and h

Dear Editor,Of all human tumors,pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas(PPGLs)have the highest heritability rate.Over 15%of PPGLs harbor mutations in genes encoding tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle-related enzymes that cause oncometabolite accumulation and drive tumorigenesis via metabolic adaptation to hypoxia and global hypermethylation[1].The dihydrolipoamide S-succinyltransferase(DLST)gene was recently described as a new PPGL susceptibility gene[2].

AIM To explore regional systolic strain of midwall and endocardial segments using speckle tracking echocardiography in patients with apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy(HCM).METHODS We prospectively assessed 20 patients(mean age 53 ± 16 years,range:18-81 years,10 were male),with apical HCM. We measured global longitudinal peak systolic strain(GLPSS) in the midwall and endocardium of the left ventricle. RESULTS The diastolic thickness of the 4 apical segments was 16.25 ± 2.75 mm. All patients had a normal global systolicfunction with a fractional shortening of 50% ± 8%. In spite of supernormal left ventricular(LV) systolic function,midwall GLPSS was decreased in all patients,more in the apical(-7.3% ±-8.8%) than in basal segments(-15.5% ±-6.93%),while endocardial GLPPS was significantly greater and reached normal values(apical:-22.8% ±-7.8%,basal:-17.9% ±-7.5%). CONCLUSION This study shows that two-dimensional strain was decreased mainly confined to the mesocardium,while endocardium myocardial deformation was preserved in HCM and allowed to identify subclinical LV dysfunction. This transmural heterogeneity in systolic strain had not been previously described in HCM and could be explained by the distribution of myofibrillar disarray in deep myocardial areas. The clinical application of this novel finding may help further understanding of the pathophysiology of HCM.

In the present work, the synthesis of micro- and nano-sized spheres of metallic bismuth by microwave-assisted solvothermal method is reported. The synthesis method was carried out at different power levels and at a unique frequency of microwave irradiation. The sphere sizes were controlled by the microwave power level and the concentration of dissolved precursor. Structural and morphological characterization was performed by SEM, HRTEM, EELS and XRD. The results demonstrated that rhombohedral zero valent Bi spheres were synthesized after microwave radiation at 600 and 1200 W. However, if the power level is decreased to 120 W, a monoclinic phase of Bi203 is obtained with a flake-like morphology. In comparison with a conventional hydrothermal process, the microwave-assisted solvothermal approach provides many advantages such as shorter reaction time, optimum manipulation of morphologies and provides a specific chemical phase and avoids the mixture of structural phases and morphologies which is essential for further applications such as drug delivery or functionalization with organic materials, thanks to its biocompatibility.
