Aqueous electrochemical delithiation of cathode materials as a strategy to selectively recover lithium from waste lithium-ion batteries

Lithium recovery from end-of-life Li-ion batteries(LIBs)through pyro-and hydrometallurgical recycling processes involves several refining stages,with high consumption of reagents and energy.A competitive technological alternative is the electrochemical oxidation of the cathode materials,whereby lithium can be deintercalated and transferred to an electrolyte solution without the aid of chemical extracting *** article investigates the potential to selectively recover Li from LIB cathode materials by direct electrochemical extraction in aqueous *** process allowed to recovering up to 98%of Li from high-purity commercial cathode materials(LiMn_(2)O_(4),LiCoO_(2),and Li Ni_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)Co_(1/3)O_(2))with a faradaic efficiency of 98%and negligible co-extraction of Co,Ni,and *** process was then applied to recover Li from the real waste LIBs black mass obtained by the physical treatment of electric vehicle battery *** black mass contained graphite,conductive carbon,and metal impurities from current collectors and steel cases,which significantly influenced the evolution and performances of Li electrochemical ***,due to concomitant oxidation of impurities,lithium extraction yields and faradaic efficiencies were lower than those obtained with high-purity cathode *** oxidation was found to occur within the voltage range investigated,but it could not quantitatively explain the reduced Li extraction *** fact,a detailed investigation revealed that above 1.3 V ***/Ag Cl,conductive carbon can be oxidized,contributing to the decreased Li *** on the reported experimental results,guidelines were provided that quantitatively enable the extraction of Li from the black mass,while preventing the simultaneous oxidation of impurities and,consequently,reducing the energy consumption of the proposed Li recovery method.

Applicability of tooth derived stem cells in neural regeneration

Within the nervous system, regeneration is limited, and this is due to the small amount of neural stem cells, the inhibitory origin of the stem cell niche and often to the development of a scar which constitutes a mechanical barrier for the regeneration. Regarding these aspects, many efforts have been done in the re- search of a cell component that combined with scaffolds and growth factors could be suitable for nervous regeneration in regenerative medicine approaches. Autologous mesenchymal stem cells represent nowa- days the ideal candidate for this aim, thank to their multipotency and to their amount inside adult tissues. However, issues in their harvesting, through the use of invasive techniques, and problems involved in their ageing, require the research of new autologous sources. To this purpose, the recent discovery of a stem cells component in teeth, and which derive from neural crest cells, has came to the light the possibility of using dental stem cells in nervous system regeneration. In this work, in order to give guidelines on the use of dental stem cells for neural regeneration, we briefly introduce the concepts of regeneration and regenerative medicine, we then focus the attention on odontogenesis, which involves the formation and the presence of a stem component in different parts of teeth, and finally we describe some experimental approaches which are exploiting dental stem cells for neural studies.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and vascular disease:State-of-the-art

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd), the most common of chronic liver disease in Western Country, is closely related to insulin resistance and oxidative stress and includes a wide spectrum of liver diseases ranging from steatosis alone, usually a benign and non-progressive condition, to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), which may progress to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. NAFLd is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome with which shares several characteristics, however recent data suggest that NAFLd is linked to increased cardiovascular risk independently of the broad spectrum of risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Accumulating evidence suggests that the clinical burden of NAFLd is not restricted to liver-related morbidity and mortality, with the majority of deaths in NAFLd patients related to cardiovascular disease and cancer and not to the progression of liver disease. Retrospective and prospective studies provide evidence of a strong association between NAFLd and subclinical manifestation of atherosclerosis(increased intima-media thickness, endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, impaired left ventricular function and coronary calcification). A general agreement emerging from these studies indicates that patients with NASH are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than those with simple steatosis, emphasizing the role of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis of these patients. It is very likely that the different mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in patients with NAFLd have a different relevance in the patients according to individual genetic background. In conclusion, in the presence of NAFLd patients should undergo a complete cardiovascular evaluation to prevent future atherosclerotic complications. dynamic Recrystallization Behavior of Q370qE Bridge Steel

Bridge steel has been widely used in recent years for its excellent performance. Understanding the high-temperature dynamic Recrystallization (dRX) behavior of high-performance bridge steel plays an important role in guiding the thermomechanical processing process. In the present study, the hot deformation behavior of Q370qE bridge steel was investigated by hot compression tests conducted on a Gleeble 3800-GTC thermal-mechanical physical simulation system at temperatures ranging from 900 ℃ to 1100 ℃ and strain rates ranging from 0.01 s^(−1) to 10 s^(−1). The obtained results were used to plot the true stress-strain and work-hardening rate curves of the experimental steel, with the latter curves used to determine the critical strains for the initiation of dRX. The Zener-Hollomon equation was subsequently applied to establish the correspondence between temperature and strain rate during the high-temperature plastic deformation of bridge steel. In terms of the dRX volume fraction solution, a new method for establishing dRX volume fraction was proposed based on two theoretical models. The good weathering and corrosion resistance of bridge steel lead to difculties in microstructure etching. To solve this, the MTEX technology was used to further develop EBSd data to characterize the original microstructure of Q370qE bridge steel. This paper lays the theoretical foundation for studying the dRX behavior of Q370qE bridge steel.

Patatin-like phospholipase domain containing-3 gene I148M polymorphism, steatosis, and liver damage in hereditary hemochromatosis

AIM： To investigate whether the patatin-/ike phosph- olipase domain containing-3 gene （PNPLA3） I148M polymorphism is associated with steatosis, fibrosis stage, and cirrhosis in hereditary hemochromatosis （HH）. METHOdS： We studied 174 consecutive unrelated homozygous for the C282Y HFE mutation of HH （C282Y＋/＋ HH） patients from Northern Italy, for whom the presence of cirrhosis could be determined based on histological or clinical criteria, without excessive alcohol intake （〈 30/20 g/d in males or females） or hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus viral hepatitis. Steatosis was evaluated in 123 patients by histology （n = 100） or ul- trasound （n = 23）. The PNPLA3 rs738409 single nucle- otide polymorphism, encoding for the p.148M protein variant, was genotyped by a Taqman assay （assay on demand, Applied Biosystems）. The association of the PNPLA3 I148M protein variant （p.I148M） with steatosis, fibrosis stage, and cirrhosis was evaluated by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS： PNPLA3 genotype was not associated with metabolic parameters, including body mass index （BMI）, the presence of diabetes, and lipid levels, but the pres- ence of the p.148M variant at risk was independently associated with steatosis [odds ratio （OR） 1.84 per p.148M allele, 95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.05-3.31; P = 0.037], independently of BMI and alanine amino- transaminase （ALT） levels. The p.148M variant was also associated with higher aspartate aminotransferase （P = 0.0014） and ALT levels （P = 0.017） at diagnosis, independently of BMI and the severity of iron overload. In patients with liver biopsy, the 148M variant was independently associated with the severity （stage） of fibrosis （estimated coefficient 0.56 ± 0.27, P = 0.041）. In the overall series of patients, the p.148M variant was associated with cirrhosis in lean （P = 0.049）, but not in overweight patients （P = not significant）.
