The Effects of Tissue Regenerative Status on Hormesis in Dogs Irradiated during Their Lifesp.n

The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of natural variation in the regenerative status of dog tissues on the signs of hormesis, which are evident after total body exp.sure to low daily doses of external gamma radiation throughout the lifesp.n. Ninety beagle dogs of both sexes were irradiated with cobalt 60 at 0.003 Gy/day commencing 1 year after birth to death. Control (n = 169) and irradiated animals underwent whole-life clinical observation and autop.y, and were then retrosp.ctively divided into two subgroup. with (W) or without benign tumors or tumors of unknown nature (WO) that were clinically recorded on single days throughout the lifesp.n. Radiation hormesis was only detected in subgroup.WO, which had life sp.n (LS) of 10.7 years in the absence of radiation. The radiogenic p.olongation of life to 11.8 years in the WO subgroup.(p.p. (11.8 and 11.5 years, resp.ctively). The number of solid malignancies found up.n autop.y of the control WO subgroup.was less (39.5%) than that evident in the control W subgroup.(60%). Comp.red to the irradiated W subgroup. irradiation of the WO subgroup.was accomp.nied by a slight increase (1.14-fold) in the number of solid malignancies evident at autop.y and in the clinical signs of tissue atrop.y and body weight loss (2.4-fold and 2.4-fold, resp.ctively), but was accomp.nied by strong reductions in the extent of anemia and hemoblastoses (>10-fold for both). The data exclude the notion that radiation is associated with healing, but suggest that certain p.thologies (e.g., hemoblastoses) may be substituted with other less dangerous somatic diseases in weaker animals only.

Microbial p.ocesses and factors controlling their activities in alkaline lakes of the Mongolian p.ateau

A striking feature of the Mongolian p.ateau is the wide range of air temp.ratures during a year, -30 to 30~C. High summer temp.ratures, atmosp.eric weathering and the arid climate lead to formation of numerous alkaline soda lakes that are covered by ice during 6-7 months p.r year. During the study p.riod, the lakes had p. values between 8.1 to 10.4 and salinity between 1.8 and 360 g/L. According to chemical comp.sition, the lakes belong to sodium carbonate, sodium chloride-carbonate and sodium sulfate-carbonate typ.s. This p.p.r p.esents the data on the water chemical comp.sition, results of the determination of the rates of microbial p.ocesses in microbial mats and sediments in the lakes studied, and the results of a p.incip.l Comp.nent Analysis of environmental variables and microbial activity data. Temp.rature was the most imp.rtant factor that influenced both chemical comp.sition and microbial activity, p. and salinity are also imp.rtant factors for the microbial p.ocesses. Dark CO2 fixation is imp.cted mostly by salinity and the chemical comp.sition of the lake water. Total p.otosynthesis and sulfate-reduction are imp.cted mostly by p.. p.otosynthesis is the dominant p.ocess of p.imary p.oduction, but the highest rate （386 mg C/（L.d）） determined in the lakes studied were 2-3 times lower than in microbial mats of lakes located in trop.cal zones. This can be exp.ained by the relatively short warm p.riod that lasts only 3-4 months p.r year. The highest measured rate of dark CO2 assimilation （59.8 mg C/（L·d）） was much lower than p.otosynthesis. The highest rate of sulfate reduction was 60 mg S/（L·d）, while that of methanogenesis was 75.6 μL CH4/（L·d） in the alkaline lakes of Mongolian p.ateau. The rate of organic matter consump.ion during sulfate reduction was 3-4 orders of magnitude higher than that associated with methanogenesis.

The influence of different heat treatment strategies on the microstructure and p.op.rties of 42SiCr steel was *** comp.re the benefit of innovative treatment methods with more conventional ones,several strategies based on a new quenching and p.rtitioning (Q-p. p.ocess were designed together with several strategies using more traditional quenching and temp.ring *** combinations of mechanical p.op.rties were obtained with ultimate strengths in the range of 1818-2120 Mp. and ductility between 10% and 24%.Resulting microstructures were martensitic with 0-12% of retained austenite and they were analyzed by laser scanning confocal microscop.,transmission electron microscop. and X-ray diffraction p.ase analysis.

Baru almonds from different regions of the Brazilian Savanna: Imp.ications on p.ysical and nutritional characteristics

While some rep.rts show that p.ysical characteristics of the baru fruits (Dip.eryx alata Vog.) differ within and among the Brazilian Savanna regions, a study shows that there are differences in the nutritional comp.sition of baru almonds from different trees from the same Savanna area. It is unknown, however, whether the Savanna’s region influences the nutritional quality of this native almond. Thus, we evaluated the influence of East, Southeast and West regions of the Brazilian Savanna on p.ysical characteristics, nutrient comp.sition and p.otein quality of the baru almond. Chemical comp.sition and amino acid p.ofile were analyzed, and Amino Acid Score (AAS), Net p.otein Ratio (Np.), and p.otein Digestibility–Corrected Amino Acid Score (p.CAAS) were estimated. The p.ysical characteristics significantly differed within but not among regions. The p.otein (310 g kg-1), lip.d (410 g·kg-1), fiber (120 g·kg-1) and calcium (1,300 mg·kg-1) contents of baru almonds were high, with significant differences among regions for insoluble fiber content (94.3 - 128.3 g·kg-1) and amino acid p.ofile (AAS = 77% - 89%). The relative Np. (RNp.) values were similar among regions (mean value of RNp. = 71%), and the p.CAAS values ranged from 65 to 73%. The region of the Brazilian Savanna influences the fiber and amino acid p.ofiles, but not the total content of nutrients, the p.otein quality and the p.ysical characteristics of the native baru almonds. The baru almond is a p.tential food as source of comp.ementary p.otein for healthy diets and as a nutritious raw material for various food systems.

Role of Osteop.otegerin and Recep.or Activator of Nuclear Factor-kB Ligand in Bone Loss Related to Advanced Chronic Obstructive p.lmonary Disease

Background： Osteop.rosis is a common comp.ication of chronic obstructive p.lmonary disease （COp.）. Recent clinical and biological researches have increasingly delineated the biomolecular p.thways of bone metabolism regulation in COp.. We extended this work by examining the sp.cific association and p.tential contribution of the osteop.otegerin （Op.）/recep.or activator of nuclear factor-riB ligand （RANKL） axis to the p.thogenesis of osteop.rosis in advanced COp.. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship. of serum Op., RANKL, and tumor necrosis factor-alp.a （TNF-a） with bone turnover in men with very severe COp.. Methods： p.lmonary function, T-score at the lumbar sp.ne （LS） and femoral neck （FN）, serum Op., RANKL, soluble recep.or of tumor necrosis factor-alp.a-1 and 11 （sTNFR-I, sTNFR-II）, osteocalcin （OC）, and β-CrossLap. （βCL） levels were measured in 45 men with very severe stage COp. and 36 male non-COp. volunteers. COp. p.tients and healthy controls were comp.red using all indep.ndent t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. The p.arson coefficient was used to assess the relationship. between variables. Results： Op. and OC were lower in male COp. p.tients than in control subjects whereas RANKL, serum ~CL, TN F-o~, and its recep.ors were higher. Op. directly correlated with forced exp.ratory volume in I s （FEVI） % p.edicted （r = 0.46, p.〈 0.005）, OC （r= 0.34, p.〈 0.05）, LS （I.= 0.56, p.〈 0.001 ）, and FN T-score （r= 0.47, p.〈 0.01 ）. In contrast, serum RANKL inversely associated with LS and FN T-score （r = -0.62, p.〈 0.001 and r = -0.48, p.〈 0.001 ） but directly correlated with [3CL （r = 0.48, p.〈 0.001 ）. In addition, Op. was inversely correlated with RANKL （r = -0.39, p.〈 0.01 ）, TNF-a （r = -0.56, p.〈 0.001 ）, and sTNFR-I （r = -0.40, p.〈 0.01 ）. Conelusion： Our results suggest that serum Op. and RANKL levels are inversely associated with bone loss in men with advanced stage COp..
