Refractive index (RI) sensing helps to identify biomolecules and chemicals in the mid-infrared range for drug discovery, bioengineering, and environmental monitoring. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate an electrically tunable RI sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity using a three-layer graphene nanoribbon array separated by hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Unlike the weak resonance in single-layer graphene nanoribbons, a much stronger plasmon resonance featuring a higher-quality factor can be excited in the graphene/hBN few-layer ribbon array. Simultaneously, the high purity of graphene on hBN results in an outstanding charge mobility above 4 ×10^4 cm^2 · V^-1·s^-1 at 300 K, which allows a larger modulation depth. The interaction between the locally enhanced field around graphene ribbons and its surrounding analyte leads to ultrahigh sensitivity (4.207μm/RIU), with the figure of merit reaching approximately ***, this ultrasensitive detector could selectively work in different wavebands by controlling gate voltages applied to *** merits of ultrahigh sensitivity and electrical tunability are major advances compared to previous RI sensors, paving a way toward ultrasensitive detection using graphene/hBN few-layer devices.

Comparison of the‘Seattle’and‘International’Criteria Electrocardiogram Interpretation in Division II Female Collegiate Athletes:A Preliminary Study

From the epididymis to the egg： participation of CRISP proteins in mammalian fertilization

Mammalian fertilization is a complex process that involves different steps of interaction between the male and female gametes. In spite of its relevance, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process still remain to be elucidated. The present review describes the contribution of our laboratory to the understanding of mammalian fertilization using Cysteine-Rlch Secretory Proteins （CRISP） as model molecules. Substantial evidence obtained from in vitro assays and knockout models shows that epididymal CRISP1 associates with the sperm surface with two different affinities during maturation, and participates in the regulation of signaling pathways during capacitation as well as in both sperm-zona pellucida interaction and gamete fusion. These observations can be extended to humans as judged by our findings showing that the human homolog of the rodent protein （hCRISP1） is also involved in both stages of fertilization. Evidence supports that other members of the CRISP family secreted in the testis （CRISP2）, epididymis （CRISP3-4） or during ejaculation （CRISP3） are also involved in sperm-egg interaction, supporting the existence of a functional redundancy and cooperation between homolog proteins ensuring the success of fertilization. Together, our observations indicate that CRISP proteins accompany spermatozoa along their transit through both the male and female reproductive tracts. We believe these results not only contribute to a better mechanistic understanding of fertilization but also support CRISP proteins as excellent candidates for future research on infertility and contraception.

Colonization of germ-free mice with a mixture of three lactobacillus strains enhances the integrity of gut mucosa and ameliorates allergic sensitization

Increasing numbers of clinical trials and animal experiments have shown that probiotic bacteria are promising tools for allergy prevention. Here, we analyzed the immunomodulatory properties of three selected lactobacillus strains and the impact of their mixture on allergic sensitization to Bet v I using a gnotobiotic mouse model. We showed that Lactobacillus （L.） rhamnosus LOCK0900, L. rhamnosus LOCK0908 and L. casei LOCK0919 are recognized via Toll-like receptor 2 （TLR2） and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 （NOD2） receptors and stimulate bone marrow-derived dendritic cells to produce cytokines in species- and strain-dependent manners. Colonization of germ-free （GF） mice with a mixture of all three strains （Lmix） improved the intestinal barrier by strengthening the apical junctional complexes of enterocytes and restoring the structures of microfilaments extending into the terminal web. Mice colonized with Lmix and sensitized to the Bet v I allergen showed significantly lower levels of allergen-specific IgE, IgG 1 and IgG2a and an elevated total IgA level in the sera and intestinal lavages as well as an increased transforming growth factor （TGF）-β level compared with the sensitized GF mice. Splenocytes and mesenteric lymph node cells from the Lmix-colonized mice showed the significant upregulation of TGF-β after in vitro stimulation with Bet v 1. Our results show that Lmix colonization improved the gut epithelial barrier and reduced allergic sensitization to Bet v 1. Furthermore, these findings were accompanied by the increased production of circulating and secretory IgA and the regulatory cytokine TGF-β. Thus, this mixture of three lactobacillus strains shows potential for use in the prevention of increased gut permeability and the onset of allergies in humans,

The Influence of Remote Ischemic Conditioning on Focal Brain Ischemia in Rats

Despite obvious progress in the treatment of acute forms of ischemic stroke, the risk of this condition remains unacceptably high. Brain infarction in the middle cerebral artery basin occurs in patients with atherosclerosis. The onset of the brain infarction is facilitated by the cessation of circulation (embolism) in conditions of insufficient collateral circulation. The extent of the infarct zone is determined by neuronal death and impaired microcirculation. The development of new methods for effective targeted restorative stroke therapy is crucial for restorative treatment and reducing the risk of mortality after stroke. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is an approach to limiting reperfusion injury in the ischemic region of the brain after focal ischemia. One of the most commonly used in vivo models in stroke studies is the filament model of Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) in rats. In our experiment, it was performed for 30 min (j. Koizumi) with subsequent 48-hour reperfusion. Within the first 24 hours after the start of reperfusion several short episodes of ischemia in low limbs were induced. After 48 hours of reperfusion the brains were harvested and stained with TTC. Then we evaluated the effect of RIC within 24 hours ex vivo in rats’ brains, as well as syndecan-1 plasma concentration. Infarct area was assessed by means of Image-Pro program with statistical analysis. Infarct volumes in the model group (31.97% ± 2.5%) were significantly higher compared to the values in the RIC group 48 hours after ischemia-reperfusion (13.6% ± 1.3%) (*P < 0.05). A significant reduction in the area of infarction after RIC is likely due to the effect on the regulation of collateral blood flow in the ischemia area. On the second day after ischemia-reperfusion, tissue swelling was reduced in the RIC group compared to the model group. BackgroundHuman rabies outbreak transmitted by bats continues to be a relevant public health problem not only in the Amazon region. The disease has affected one of the areas with the greatest poverty in southeastern Brazil, a region inhabited by the Maxakali indigenous *** presentationWe describe four cases of rabies among indigenous children that occurred in the indigenous village of Pradinho, municipality of Bertópolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cases were notified between April and May 2022, all of whom died on average eight days after the first symptoms. All cases were observed in rural residents under 12 years of age. The probable form of exposure was through bat bites. The predominant symptoms were prostration, fever, dyspnea, sialorrhea, tachycardia, and altered level of consciousness. Half of the cases underwent late and/or incomplete post-exposure rabies prophylaxis, however, the other half underwent pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis, with only one case completing the scheme and another undergoing the adapted Milwaukee Protocol (Recife Protocol). All cases ended in *** was the first rabies outbreak among indigenous people in Brazil. Among the manifested clinical forms in the series, there was a disease atypical presentation in at least one case. We suggest active surveillance and an intercultural educational campaign to prevent new cases.
